“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper.”

Jesus rebuked the hypocrisy of the Pharisees in Lk 12:1-3. He implied that their hypocrisy would be revealed and judged. In Lk 12:4-7, Jesus clearly told us whom we really should be afraid of. He teaches us that we should really fear God, who can hold the final court to try us for our sins, and can cast us into hell forever, after our bodies die. He advises us that we should live today with the God living in our heart, a God who is a judge and has the authority and power to execute the sentence. In Lk 12:8-12, Jesus promises that he will acknowledge him who acknowledges him before men. In Lk 12:13-21, Jesus tells us that he who piles up wealth in the world but does not consider his situation after his death is a fool. In Lk 12:35-48, Jesus tells of the need to live a wakened life. In Lk 12:54-56, Jesus tells us to discern the time.

Then, in Lk 12:57-59, Jesus, giving an example of a criminal trial, tells us to be reconciled with the accuser as soon as possible by all means before we are tried. He says that your suffering will be enormous if you do not apologize to the victim and make proper compensation, so that he gets angry and sues you and that you are convicted.

The entire text of Luke 12 explains one theme: Be reconciled with Jesus. To be reconciled with Jesus is to acknowledge him as the Lord before men. Then Jesus also will acknowledge the man, exonerate him from eternal punishment and give him eternal heaven. But those who are not reconciled with Jesus will suffer eternal hell from God, the severe judge. He who understands the present time is a wise person. It is important not to miss this moment when Jesus, coming down from heaven, holds out a hand of forgiveness and reconciliation. See him work miracles. See him raise the dead! Look at his ability to feed thousands of people with two fish and five loaves of bread! See him drive out demons! Are these not the evidence that he is now working in the world as the Son of God and as the Representative of God? Do not miss the time of reconciliation. Once you stand before the judge (the God), there is no reconciliation. Never fool away this chance of reconciliation! We are stupid if we love only the treasures of the world and forget the fact that we should be saved by God. Wise are those who are awake. My hypocritical life can not save me. Now, while I am alive, I must believe in Jesus as my Savior and be reconciled with him. If you die without believing in Jesus, you will perish forever.
