In chapter 32 of Exodus, Moses left the Israelites for a while to meet God in Mount Sinai and receive the Decalogue. However Aaron and Israelites, when Moses' returning was delayed long, gathered gold, made a calf, and declared it was the God who had brought them out of Egypt. And they worshiped it as the God.
God rushed Moses down the mountain, and Moses angrily broke the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments given by God, and destroyed the idol of the golden calf.
What does the golden calf idol mean to us believers? God is holy, and is on the high mountain Sinai, where he speaks to Moses to govern Israel. God has a plan to lead them into the land of Canaan. But Israelites became impatient when Moses, the servant of God, did not come down from the mountain. Eventually, they made an idol at the foot of the mountain for themselves, and declared it was the God and served it. The real God is on Mount Sinai, but humans made an idol-god representing the God. They pulled God down to themselves at their will and even changed him to a form of a beast.
The real God and the God that you imagine, expect, and like could be different. For example, let's say God gave you a promise and told you a plan for you. However, when the achievement of the promise is delayed, you might put aside the God of promise, be not patient like Abraham and Saul, and set your own goal and begin to pray to God for your own plan.
In this case, in the sight of God, the object you're praying to is not the actual God himself but the golden calf idol under the mountain. Don't you think so? We commit the sins of Aaron when we forget the holiness, faithfulness, and sincerity of God and try to change him wrong arbitrarily and serve a changed God.
If God rebukes you that you're serving a golden calf idol even though you think you've been living a good Christian life of prayer and worship, you must wake up and look again at the God of promise, the God of sincerity, and must serve the very true God. The God you misunderstand is a golden calf idol, so you should abandon it quickly.
