According to the Bible, King Saul chased David to kill him, and for a while entered a cave to relieve the bowels. But David and his men were hiding there. When David's men told him to kill Saul, he did not kill Saul, but stealthily cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. When Saul left the cave, David also went out of the cave and said to Saul, "See this skirt of your robe. I could have killed you, but I didn't kill you!" Saul blushed, said 'thank you' to David, and left the place.

If David had killed Saul in the cave, could he have become a king immediately? What a naive idea! If David had killed Saul at that time, he would have died without exiting out of the cave because there was Saul's army outside the cave. The thought that the throne will go to David immediately after Saul's death is but a naive imagination. Was David the only one who wanted to be king in Israel? In Israel, there were also Saul's sons and Saul's men who were the leaders of army. If David had killed Saul, and if he could have defeated Saul's army outside the cave, he could not have been a king also then, for not all Saul's soldiers were there. Above all, he could not be king at that time because Israel did not yet recognized David as one of the leading politicians.

Above all, if David had killed Saul, Jonathan would have succeeded Saul as king, and Jonathan would have had no choice but to treat David who killed his father as an enemy. What a terrible situation! David did not kill Saul because he thought of his best friend Jonathan.

So David's wisest choice in the cave was to cut off only the hem of Saul's clothes and to subdue him ethically. God led David in the best way at that time, and had him not kill Saul but only insult him. If we are in God, God guides us in the best way at the best time.
