Greetings in the blood of Jesus Christ from Ignatius, the “God-inspired,” to the church of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, which is at Philadelphia in Asia ㅡ an object of the divine mercy and firmly knit in godly unity. Yours is a deep, abiding joy in the Passion of our Lord; and by his overflowing mercy you are thoroughly convinced of his resurrection. You are the very personification of eternal and perpetual joy. This is especially true if you are at one with the bishop, and with the presbyters and deacons, who are on his side and who have been appointed by the will of Jesus Christ. By his Holy Spirit and in accordance with his own will he validated their appointment.

1 I well realize that this bishop of yours does not owe his ministry to his own efforts or to men. Nor is it to flatter his vanity that he holds this office which serves the common good. Rather does he owe it to the love of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I have been struck by his charming manner. By being silent he can do more than those who chatter. For he is in tune with the commandments as a harp is with its strings. For this reason I bless his godly mind, recognizing its virtue and perfection, and the way he lives in altogether godly composure, free from fitfulness and anger.

2 Since you are children of the light of truth, flee from schism and false doctrine. Where the Shepherd is, there follow like sheep. For there are many specious wolves who, by means of wicked pleasures, capture those who run God’s race. In the face of your unity, however, they will not have a chance. 3 Keep away from bad pasturage. Jesus Christ does not cultivate it since the Father did not plant it. Not that I found schism among you ㅡ rather had you been sifted. As many as are God’s and Jesus Christ’s, they are on the bishop’s side; and as many as repent and enter the unity of the church, they shall be God’s, and thus they shall live in Jesus Christ’s way. Make no mistake, my brothers, if anyone joins a schismatic he will not inherit God’s Kingdom. If anyone walks in the way of heresy, he is out of sympathy with the Passion.

2장 여러분이 진리의 빛의 자녀들이기에 분열과 그릇된 교훈을 멀리하십시오. 목자이신 예수님이 계신 곳에 양 같은(양처럼 꾸민) 자(목자)가 이어 나타납니다.1) 세상에는 하나님의 경기에서 뛰는 자들을 악한 쾌락으로 잡으려는 많은 탈을 쓴 늑대들이 있습니다. 그러나 여러분의 일치됨이 있는 곳에서 그들은 기회를 잡지 못할 것입니다. 3장 나쁜 목초지를 피하십시오. 성부 하나님께서 그것을 심지 않으셨기에 예수 그리스도께서 재배하지 않으십니다.2) 내가 여러분 가운데 분열을 보아서가 아닙니다. 그보다는 여러분은 체로 가려내졌습니다. 하나님과 예수 그리스도 편에 선 자들은 다 감독의 편에 선 자들이고, 회개하여 교회의 일치에 가담하는 자들은 다 하나님의 소유가 되고, 따라서 예수님의 방식으로 살 것입니다. 형제 여러분, 실수하지 마십시오. 분열에 가담하는 자는 하나님의 나라를 상속받지 못합니다. 이단의 길을 가는 자는 예수님의 수난과 일치하지 않습니다.

4 Be careful, then, to observe a single Eucharist. For there is one flesh of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and one cup of his blood that makes us one, and one altar, just as there is one bishop along with the presbytery and the deacons, my fellow slaves. In that way whatever you do is in line with God’s will.

4장 단일한 성만찬을 유지하도록 주의하십시오. 예수 그리스도라는 우리 주의 한 육체, 우리를 하나로 만드는 한 잔의 그분의 피, 그리고 한 제단이 있습니다. 장로회와 >나의 동료 종들인 집사들<과 함께 한 명의 감독이 있는 것처럼 말입니다. 이렇게 하여 여러분이 하는 모든 일은 하나님의 뜻과 일치하게 됩니다.

 

5 My brothers, in my abounding love for you I am overjoyed to put you on your guard ㅡ though it is not I, but Jesus Christ. Being a prisoner for his cause makes me the more fearful that I am still far from being perfect. Yet your prayers to God will make me perfect so that I may gain that fate which I have mercifully been allotted, by taking refuge in the “Gospel,” as in Jesus’ flesh, and in the “Apostles,” as in the presbytery of the Church. And the “Prophets,” let us love them too, because they anticipated the gospel in their preaching on him. Thus they were in Jesus Christ’s unity. Saints they were, and we should love and admire them, seeing that Jesus Christ vouched for them and they form a real part of the gospel of our common hope.

5장 내 형제 여러분, 여러분에 대한 나의 큰 사랑 가운데 나는 여러분을 경계시키게 하여 매우 기쁩니다. 내가 아니라 그리스도께서 하신 일이지만 말입니다. 그분의 일로 죄수가 되는 것이 나로 하여금 더욱더 내 자신이 여전히 완전치 못함에 대해 두려움을 줍니다. 그렇지만 하나님께 드리는 여러분의 기도가 나를 완전하게 하여 자비롭게 내게 주어진 그 운명을 받아들이게 할 것입니다. 내가 예수님의 몸에 피하듯 “복음(이신 분)”에 피하고, 교회의 장로회에 피하듯 “사도들”에 피함으로써 말입니다. 그리고 “예언자들”, 우리는 그들도 사랑해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그들이 그분을 예언하는 중에 복음을 예견했기 때문입니다. 이처럼 그들은 예수 그리스도의 일치 안에 있습니다. 그들은 성도들이었고, 우리는 그들을 사랑하고 감탄해야 합니다. 예수 그리스도께서 그들을 보증하시고, 그들은 >우리의 공동의 소망<의 복음의 실제적인 한 부분이기 때문입니다.

 

6 Now, if anyone preaches Judaism to you, pay no attention to him. For it is better to hear about Christianity from one of the circumcision than Judaism from a Gentile. If both, moreover, fail to talk about Jesus Christ, they are to me tombstones and graves of the dead, on which only human names are inscribed. Flee, then, the wicked tricks and snares of the prince of this world, lest his suggestions wear you down, and you waver in your love. Rather, meet together, all of you, with a single heart. I thank my God that in my relations with you I have nothing to be ashamed of. No one can brag secretly or openly that I was the slightest burden to anyone. I trust, too, that none of those I talked to will need to take what I say as a criticism of them.

6장 이제 어떤 자가 여러분에게 유대교를 설교하면 그를 무시하십시오. 할례받은 자에게 기독교에 대해 듣는 것이 이방인에게 유대교에 대해 듣는 것보다 낫습니다. 더욱이 이 둘이 예수 그리스도에 대해 말하지 않는다면, 그들은 나에게 오직 인간의 이름만 새겨진 죽은 자들의 묘비와 무덤밖에 안 됩니다. 그러니 이 세상 지배자의 악한 계교와 함정을 피하여 그의 충동질이 여러분을 자꾸 격파하지 않게 하고, 여러분의 사랑에 주저함이 없게 하십시오. 그보다는 여러분 모두가 한마음으로 모이십시오. 여러분들과의 교제에서 내가 부끄러워할 게 하나도 없음을 하나님께 감사드립니다. 그 누구도 내가 어떤 자에게도 가장 짐이 되지 않았음을 공개든 비공개든 자랑하지 마십시오. 또한 나는 나와 대화했던 그 어떤 자들도 내가 그들에게 했던 말을 자신들에 대한 비판으로 받아들일 필요가 없을 거라 생각합니다.

 

7 Some there may be who wanted in a human way to mislead me, but the Spirit is not misled, seeing it comes from God. For “it knows whence it comes and whther it goes,” and exposes what is secret. When I was with you I cried out, raising my voice ㅡ it was God’s voice ㅡ “Pay heed to the bishop, the presbytery, and the deacons.” Some, it is true, suspected that I spoke thus because I had been told in advance that some of you were schismatics. But I swear by Him for whose cause I am a prisoner, that from no human channels did I learn this. It was the Spirit that kept on preaching in these words: “Do nothing apart from the bishop; keep your bodies as if they were God‘s temple; value unity; flee schism; imitate Jesus Christ as he imitated his Father.“

7장 인간적 방식으로 나를 오도하려 하는 몇몇 자들이 있으나, 성령께서는 오도되지 않으십니다. 성령은 하나님으로부터 오시기 때문입니다. “그(성령)는 자신이 어디에서 와서 어디로 가는지 아시고,”1) 숨겨진 것을 드러내십니다.2) 내가 여러분과 함께 있었을 때 나는 목소리(이건 하나님의 목소리였음)를 높여 “감독, 장로회, 집사들의 말을 들으시오”라고 했습니다. 사실 몇몇 사람들은 >앞서 내가 ’여러분들 일부가 분리자들이라‘는 말을 들어서 그렇게 말했다<고 의심하기도 했습니다. 그러나 나는 >내가 죄수가 된 이유가 된 분<을 두고 맹세합니다. 나는 그 누구에게도 그런 말을 들은 적이 없습니다. 다음과 같은 말로 계속 말씀하신 분은 성령이셨습니다: “감독 없이는 아무 일도 하지 말고, 여러분의 몸이 하나님의 성전인 것처럼 지키고, 일치를 소중히 여기고, 분리를 피하고, 예수 그리스도께서 그분의 성부 하나님을 본받으셨듯 예수 그리스도를 본받으시오.”

8 I, then, was doing all I could, as a man utterly devoted to unity. Where there is schism and bad feeling, God has no place. The Lord forgives all who repent ㅡ if, that is, their repentance brings them into God’s unity and to the bishop’s council. I put my confidence in the grace of Jesus Christ. He will release you from all your chains.

8장 나는 온전히 일치에 힘썼던 자로서 최선을 다했습니다. 분열과 악감정이 있는 곳에 하나님께서 안 계십니다. 사람들의 회개가 하나님의 일치를 이루게 하고 감독과 한 무리를 이루는 경우라면 주께서는 회개하는 모든 자들을 용서하십니다. 나는 예수 그리스도의 자비를 믿습니다. 그분께서 여러분의 모든 사슬을 풀어주실 것입니다.

 

I urge you, do not do things in cliques, but act as Christ’s disciples. When I heard some people saying, “If I don’t find it in the original documents, I don’t believe it in the gospel,” I answered them, “But it is written there.” They retorted, “That’s just the question.” To my mind it is Jesus Christ who is the original documents. The inviolable archives are his cross and death and his resurrection and the faith that came by him. It is by these things and through your prayers that I want to be justified.

여러분에게 권고합니다. 파벌을 이루지 마시고 그리스도의 제자로서 행하십시오. 몇몇 사람들이 “원본(原本)에 없는 것이라면 나는 복음서에 있는 것이라도 믿지 않는다”고 말하는 것을 듣고 나는 그들에게 “그것은 참으로 그곳에 기록되어 있습니다”라고 말했습니다. 그들은 “그 점이 바로 밝혀야 할 문제요”라고 대꾸했습니다. 내 생각엔 원본들은 바로 예수 그리스도이십니다. 그분의 십자가와 죽음, 그분의 부활과 그분으로 인한 믿음이 바로 범할 수 없는 기록 보관소입니다. 이것들과 여러분의 기도로 내가 옳다 인정받고 싶습니다.

 

9 Priests are a fine thing, but better still is the High Priest who was entrusted with the Holy of Holies. He alone was entrusted with God’s secrets. He is the door to the Father. Through it there enter Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the prophets and apostles and the Church. All these find their place in God’s unity. But there is something special about the gospel ㅡ I mean the coming of the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ, his Passion and resurrection. The beloved prophets announced his coming; but the gospel is the crowning achievement forever. All these things, taken together, have their value, provided you hold the faith in love.

9장 제사장들도 훌륭한 직분이지만 훨씬 더 나은 직분은 지성소를 담당하는 대제사장입니다. 오직 그에게만 하나님의 비밀이 맡겨졌습니다. 그는 하나님께로 가는 문입니다. 이 문으로 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱, 그리고 교회의 예언자들과 사도들이 들어갑니다. 이 모든 자들이 하나님의 일치 안에 자리 잡고 있습니다. 하지만 복음에는 특별한 게 있습니다. 그것은 곧 구원자이신 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 오심, 그의 수난과 부활입니다. 사랑하는 예언자들이 그의 오심을 예언했으나, 복음은 영원히 최고의 성취입니다. 여러분이 사랑에 대한 믿음이 있을 때, 이 모든 것들은 다 함께 고려되어 각각의 가치를 지닙니다.

 

10 Thanks to your prayers and to the love that you have for me in Christ Jesus, news has reached me that the church at Antioch in Syria is at peace. Consequently, it would be a nice thing for you, as a church of God, to elect a deacon to go there on a mission, as God’s representative, and at a formal service to congratulate them and glorify the Name. He who is privileged to perform such a ministry will enjoy the blessing of Jesus Christ, and you too will win glory. If you really want to do this for God’s honor, it is not impossible, just as some of the churches in the vicinity have already sent bishops; others presbyters and deacons.

10장 여러분의 기도와 예수 그리스도 안에서 여러분이 내게 준 사랑 덕분에 >시리아 안디옥 교회가 평화로워졌다<는 소식을 내가 들었습니다. 그러므로 여러분이 하나님의 교회로서 집사 일인을 세워 하나님의 대리 자격으로 사절(使節) 임무로 거기에 가 공식적으로 그들을 축하하고 그(주님의) 이름을 영광되게 함이 좋을 것 같습니다. 그 일을 맡는 영광을 받는 자는 예수 그리스도의 복을 받고, 여러분도 영광을 받을 것입니다. 여러분이 진정 하나님의 영광을 위해 이 일을 하고자 한다면, 주위의 교회들이 이미 감독들을, 다른 교회들은 장로들과 집사들을 보낸 것처럼, 그 일이 불가능한 게 아닙니다.

 

11 Now about Philo, the deacon from Cilicia. He is well spoken of and right now he is helping me in God’s cause, along with Rheus Agathopus ㅡ a choice personㅡ who followed me from Syria and so has said good-by to this present life. They speak well of you, and I thank God on your account that you welcomed them, as the Lord does you. I hope that those who slighted them will be redeemed by Jesus Christ’s grace. The brothers in Troas send their love and greetings. It is from there that I am sending this letter to you by Burrhus. The Ephesians and Smyrnaeans have done me the honor of sending him to be with me. They in turn will be honored by Jesus Christ, on whom they have set their hope with body, soul, spirit, faith, love, and a single mind. Farewell in Christ Jesus, our common Hope.
