폴리갑님에게

 

Heartiest greetings from Ignatius, the “God-inspired,” to Polycarp, who is bishop of the church at Smyrna ㅡ or rather who has God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ for his bishop.

1 While I was impressed with your godly mind, which is fixed, as it were, on an immovable rock, I am more than grateful that I was granted the sight of your holy face. God grant I may never forget it! By the grace which you have put on, I urge you to press forward in your race and to urge everybody to be saved. Vindicate your position by giving your whole attention to its material and spiritual sides. Make unity your concern ㅡ there is nothing better than that. Lend everybody a hand, as the Lord does you. “Out of love be patient” with everyone, as indeed you are. Devote yourself to continual prayer. Ask for increasing insight. Be ever on the watch by keeping your spirit alert. Take a personal interest in those you talk to, just as God does. “Bear the diseases” of everyone, like an athlete in perfect form. The greater the toil, the greater the gain.

1장 마치 움직일 수 없는 바위에 고정된 것같이 흔들림 없는 귀하의 경건한 마음에 큰 감동을 받고, 나는 귀하의 거룩한 얼굴을 볼 기회가 있은 것에 어찌 감사를 표해야 할지 모르겠습니다. 하나님, 나로 그것을 결코 잊지 않게 하소서! 귀하께서 입으신 은혜에 의지하여, 나는 귀하께서 자신의 경주를 계속하고, 모든 자들은 구원을 얻으라 강력히 권고합니다. 귀하의 지위의 영적, 물질적 면들에 귀하의 온 관심을 기울여 귀하의 지위를 변호하십시오. 2 It is no credit to you if you are fond of good pupils. Rather by your gentleness subdue those who are annoying. Not every wound is healed by the same plaster. Relieve spasms of pain with poultices. In all circumstances be “wise as a serpent,” and perpetually “harmless as a dove.” The reason you have a body as well as soul is that you may win the favor of the visible world. But ask that you may have revelations of what is unseen. In that way you will lack nothing and have an abundance of every gift.

Just as pilots demand winds and a storm-tossed sailor a harbor, so times like these demand a person like you. With your help we will get to God. As God’s athlete, be sober. The prize, as you very well know, is immortality and eternal life. Bound as I am with chains that you kissed, I give my whole self for you ㅡ cheap sacrifice though it is!

3 You must not be panic-stricken by those who have an air of credibility but who teach heresy. Stand your ground like an anvil under the hammer. A great athlete must suffer blows to conquer. And especially for God’s sake must we put up with everything, so that he will put up with us. Show more enthusiasm than you do. Mark the times. Be on the alert for him who is above time, the Timeless, the Unseen, the One who became visible for our sakes, who was beyond touch and passion, yet who for our sakes became subject to suffering, and endured everything for us.

3장 외양은 신뢰할 만하나 이단을 가르치는 자들 때문에 당황하지 마십시오. 망치 아래의 모루처럼 버티십시오. 위대한 운동선수는 승리하기 위해 타격들을 견뎌야 합니다. 특히 하나님을 위해 우리는 모든 것을 참아내어 그분께서도 우리를 참아내시도록 해야 합니다. 능력 이상의 열의를 보이십시오. 시대를 주목하십시오. 시간을 초월하신 분, 즉 영원하신 그분, 보이지 않는 그분을 주목하십시오. 우리를 위해 눈에 보이는 분이 되시고, 접촉과 고통을 초월하시나 우리를 위해 고통을 받는 자가 되시어 우리를 위해 모든 것을 견디신 그분을 주목하십시오.

 

4 Widows must not be neglected. After the Lord you must be their protector. Do not let anything be done without your consent; and do not do anything without God’s, as indeed you do not. Stand firm. Hold services more often. Seek out everybody by name. Do not treat slaves and slave girls contemptuously. Neither must they grow insolent. But for God’s glory they must give more devoted service, so that they may obtain from God a better freedom. Moreover, they must not be overanxious to gain their freedom at the community’s expense, lest they prove to be slaves of selfish passion. 5 Flee from such wicked practices ㅡ nay, rather, preach against them.

4장 과부들을 소홀히 하면 안 됩니다. 주님 다음으로 귀하께서 그들의 보호자가 되어야 합니다. 귀하의 동의 없이는 어떤 것도 행해져서는 안 되게 하고, 하나님의 동의 없이는 아무것도 하지 마십시오. 귀하께서 진실로 그러는 것처럼 말입니다. 굳게 서십시오. 집회를 더 자주 여십시오. 모든 자를 이름을 불러 찾으십시오. 남녀 노예들을 경멸하여 대하지 마십시오. 그들도 오만해지면 안 됩니다. 하나님의 영광을 위해 그들은 더 열심히 주어진 일에 충실하여 하나님으로부터 더 나은 자유를 얻도록 해야 합니다. 더욱이 그들은 교회 재정으로 자유인이 되려는 지나친 욕심을 부려 스스로를 이기적 욕망의 노예로 드러내면 안 됩니다. 5장 그런 사악한 행위들이 없게 하십시오. 아니, 그보다는 그것들을 규탄하는 설교를 하십시오.

 

Tell my sisters to love the Lord and to be altogether contented with their husbands. Similarly urge my brothers in the name of Jesus Christ “to love their wives as the Lord loves the Church.” If anyone can live in chastity for the honor of the Lord’s flesh, let him do so without ever boasting. If he boasts of it, he is lost; and if he is more highly honored than the bishop, his chastity is as good as forfeited. It is right for men and women who marry to be united with the bishop’s approval. In that way their marriage will follow God’s will and not the prompting of lust. Let everything be done so as to advance God’s honor.

나의 자매들에게는 주님을 사랑하고 자기 남편으로 온전히 만족해하라고 말하십시오. 마찬가지로 내 형제들에게 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 “주께서 교회를 사랑하심같이 자기 아내를 사랑하라”1)하십시오. 어떤 자가 주님의 육신에 대한 존경심으로 금욕(순결)의 삶을 살 수 있다면, 자랑하지 말고 그렇게 살게 하십시오. 그가 그것을 자랑하면 그는 잘못된 것이고, 그가 감독보다 더 존경받는다면 그의 순결은 상실된 거나 마찬가지입니다. 결혼하는 남녀는 감독의 승인하에 하나됨이 옳습니다. 그렇게 해야 욕망의 충동을 따르지 않고 하나님의 뜻을 따르는 것입니다. 매사를 하나님의 영광이 높여지는 방향으로 하십시오.

6 Pay attention to the bishop so that God will pay attention to you. I give my life as a sacrifice (poor as it is) for those who are obedient to the bishop, the presbyters, and the deacons. Along with them may I get my share of God’s reward! Share your hard training together ㅡ wrestle together, run together, suffer together, go to bed together, get up together, as God’s stewards, assessors, and assistants. Give satisfaction to Him in whose ranks you serve and from whom you get your pay. Let none of you prove a deserter. Let your baptism be your arms; your faith, your helmet; your love, your spear; your endurance, your armor. Let your deeds be your deposits, so that you will eventually get back considerable savings. Be patient, then, and gentle with each other, as God is with you. May I always be happy about you!

6장 여러분은 감독에게 관심을 가지시어 하나님께서 여러분께 관심 가지시도록 하십시오. 나는 (비록 하찮은 것이긴 하나) 내 생명을 감독, 장로들, 집사들에게 순종하는 자들을 위해 바칩니다. 그들과 함께 나도 하나님으로부터 오는 보상을 나누었으면 좋겠습니다! 서로 함께 강한 훈련 받으십시오. 하나님의 청지기, 보좌인, 보조자로서 함께 씨름하고, 함께 달리고, 함께 고생하고, 함께 자고 함께 일어나십시오. 여러분이 복무하고 계신 군대의 주인이시고 여러분에게 봉급을 주시는 분에게 만족을 주십시오. 여러분 그 누구도 탈영병이 되지 마십시오. 여러분의 세례가 여러분의 무기, 여러분의 믿음이 여러분의 투구, 여러분의 사랑이 여러분의 창, 여러분의 인내가 여러분의 갑옷이 되게 하십시오. 여러분의 행위가 여러분의 예금이 되게 하여 여러분이 마침내 큰 금액을 되돌려 받을 수 있게 하십시오. 인내하시고, 서로에게 친절하십시오. 하나님께서 여러분에게 그러하시듯 말입니다. 여러분 때문에 내가 항상 행복했으면 좋겠습니다.!

 

7 News has reached me that, thanks to your prayers, the church at Antioch in Syria is now at peace. At this I have taken new courage and, relying on God, I have set my mind at rest ㅡ assuming, that is, I may get to God through suffering, and at the resurrection prove to be your disciple. So, may dear Polycarp (and how richly God has blessed you!), you ought to call a most religious council and appoint somebody whom you regard as especially dear and diligent, and who can act as God’s messenger. You should give him the privilege of going to Syria and of advancing God’s glory by extolling your untiring generosity. A Christian does not control his own life, but gives his whole time to God. This is God’s work, and when you have completed it, it will be yours as well. For God’s grace gives me confidence that you are ready to act generously when it comes to his business. It is because I am well aware of your earnest sincerity that I limit my appeal to so few words.

7장 여러분의 기도 덕분에 시리아 안디옥 교회가 이제 평화로워졌다는 소식을 들었습니다. 이 때문에 나는 새 용기를 얻었고, 하나님을 의지하며 마음의 쉼을 얻었습니다. 고난을 통하여 내가 하나님께 갈 수 있고, 부활 때 귀하의 제자임이 드러날 거라 생각해서입니다. 그러하니, 친애하는 폴리갑님 (하나님께서 참으로 풍성히 귀하를 축복하셨습니다!), 가장 경건한 회의를 여시어 >귀하께서 특히 귀하고 성실하게 여기시고 하나님의 사자(使者) 임무를 맡을 수 있는 한 사람<을 임명하십시오. 그에게 시리아로 가 귀하의 끈기 있는 관용을 격찬하게 하여 하나님께 영광이 되게 하십시오. 기독교인은 자신의 생명을 주관하지 않고, 자신의 전(全) 시간을 하나님께 바칩니다. 이것이 하나님의 일이고, 귀하께서 그 일을 완수하면 그것 또한 귀하의 것도 됩니다. 하나님의 은혜가 내게 >하나님의 일이라면 귀하께서 아낌없이 행할 준비가 되어있다<는 확신을 줍니다. 내가 귀하의 진지한 성실함을 잘 알기에 내 부탁을 몇 자로 제한합니다.

 

8 I have been unable to write to all the churches because I am sailing at once (so God has willed it) from Troas to Neapolis. I want you, therefore, as one who has the mind of God, to write to the churches ahead and to bid them to do the same. Those who can should send representatives, while the others should send letters by your own delegates. In that way you will win renown, such as you deserve, by an act that will be remembered forever.

8장 내가 (하나님께서 정하신 바에 따라) 즉시 드로아에서 네아폴리스로 항해하는 중이어서 모든 교회들에게 편지를 쓰지 못했습니다. 그러므로 나는, 하나님의 심정으로, 귀하께서 앞서서 교회들에게 편지를 써 그들에게 동일한 일을 하도록 말했으면 합니다. 보낼 수 있는 자는 대표단을 보내고, 다른 자들은 귀하의 사절단 편으로 편지를 보내게 하십시오. 이렇게 하여 귀하는 영원히 기억될 행위로 귀하께 합당한 명예를 얻게 될 것입니다.

Grace will ever be with him and with Polycarp who sends him. I bid you farewell as always in our God, Jesus Christ. May you abide in him and so share in the divine unity and be under God’s care.
