Polycarp and the presbyters with him, to the Church of God that sojourns at Philippi; may mercy and peace be multiplied to you from God Almighty and Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

폴리갑과 장로들은 빌립보에 있는 하나님의 교회에 인사합니다. 전능하신 하나님과 우리 구세주 예수 그리스도로부터 큰 자비와 평화가 여러분에게 임하길 기도합니다.

 

1 I rejoice with you greatly in our Lord Jesus Christ, in that you have welcomed the models of true Love, and have helped on their way, as opportunity was given you, those men who are bound in fetters which become the saints, which are indeed the diadems of the true elect of God and of your Lord. And I also rejoice because the firm root of your faith, famous from the earliest times, still abides and bears fruit for our Lord Jesus Christ, who endured for our sins even to face death, “whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of Hades.” In him, “though you have not seen him, you believe with inexpressible and exalted joy” ㅡ joy that many have longed to experience ㅡ knowing that “you are saved by grace, not because of works,” namely, by the will of God through Jesus Christ.

2 “Therefore, girding your loins, serve God in fear” and in truth, forsaking empty talkativeness and the erroneous teaching of the crowd, “believing on him who raised our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead and gave him glory” and a throne on his right hand; “to whom he subjected all things, whether in heaven or on earth,” whom “everything that breathes” serves, who will come as “judge of the living and the dead,” whose blood God will require from those who disobey him. For “he who raised him from the dead will raise us also,” if we do his will and follow his commandments, and love what he loved, refraining from all wrongdoing, avarice, love of money, slander, and false witness; “not returning evil for evil or abuse for abuse,” or blow for blow, or curse for curse; but rather remembering what the Lord said when he taught: “Judge not, that you be not judged; forgive, and you will be forgiven; be merciful, that you may be shown mercy; the measure you give will be the measure you get”; and “blessed are the poor and those persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.”

3 I write these things about righteousness, brethren, not at my own instance, but because you first invited me to do so. Certainly, neither I nor anyone like me can follow the wisdom of the blessed and glorious Paul, who, when he was present among you face to face with the generation of his time, taught you accurately and firmly “the word of truth.” Also when absent he wrote you letters that will enable you, if you study them carefully, to grow in the faith delivered to you ㅡ “which is mother of us all,” accompanied by hope, and led by love to God and Christ and our neighbor. For if anyone is occupied in these, he has fulfilled the commandment of righteousness; for he who possesses love is far from all sin. 4 But “the love of money is the beginning of all evils.” Knowing, therefore, that “we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out,” let us arm ourselves “with the weapons of righteousness,” and let us first of all teach ourselves to live by the commandment of the Lord.

Then you must teach your wives in the faith delivered to them and in love and purity ㅡ to cherish their own husbands in all fidelity, and to love all others equally in all chastity, and to educate their children in the fear of God. And the widows should be discreet in their faith pledged to the Lord, praying unceasingly on behalf of all, refraining from all slander, gossip, false witness, love of money ㅡ in fact, from evil of any kind ㅡ knowing that they are God’s altar, that everything is examined for blemishes, and nothing escapes him whether of thoughts or sentiments, or any of “the secrets of the heart.” 5 Knowing, then, that “God is not mocked,” we ought to live worthily of his commandment and glory.

그러니 여러분은 여러분의 아내들에게 >그들에게 전달된 믿음 안에서 그리고 사랑과 정결함으로 완전한 정절 가운데 자기 남편을 소중히 여기고, 완전한 순결 가운데 다른 모든 자들을 사랑하고, 하나님을 경외하는 가운데 자기 자녀들을 교육해야 함<을 가르쳐야 합니다. 그리고 과부들은 주님께 맹세한 그들의 믿음에 사려 깊어, 모든 자들을 위해 중단없이 기도하고, 모든 중상, 험담, 거짓 증언, 돈 사랑에서, 사실 모든 악으로부터 벗어나야 합니다. 그들이 하나님의 제단이고, 모든 것이 흠 검사를 받아 생각이나 감정이나 그 어떤 “마음의 비밀들”1)도 그분을 피할 수 없음을 그들이 알기에 그렇습니다. 5장 “하나님은 경홀히 여김 받지 않으심”2)을 우리가 알므로, 우리는 그분의 계명과 영광에 일치한 삶을 살아야 합니다.

Likewise the deacons should be blameless before his righteousness, as servants of God and Christ and not of men; not slanderers, or double-tongued, not lovers of money, temperate in all matters, compassionate, careful, living according to the truth of the Lord, who became “a servant of all”; to whom, if we are pleasing in the present age, we shall also obtain the age to come, inasmuch as he promised to raise us from the dead. And if we bear our citizenship worthy of him, “we shall also reign with him” ㅡ provided, of course, that we have faith.

마찬가지로 집사들도 인간의 종이 아니라 하나님과 그리스도의 종으로서 자신의 의로움에 앞서 죄 없어야 하고, 비방하거나 일구이언하지 않고, 돈을 사랑하지 않아야 하며, 모든 일에 절제하고, 동정적이고 신중하며, 주의 진리에 맞게 살아야 합니다. 주께서는 “모든 자들의 종이시고”1), 우리가 현 시대에 (그분께) 만족을 주는 자들이라면, 그분께서 우리를 죽음에서 살리실 것을 약속하셨기에 우리는 그분께 갈 기회(때)도 얻게 될 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 그분의 존엄에 일치하는 우리의 시민권을 가지고 있으면, “우리는 그분과 함께 다스리기도 할 것입니다”2). 물론, 우리에게 믿음이 있다면 말입니다.

Similarly also the younger ones must be blameless in all things, especially taking thought of purity and bridling themselves from all evil. It is a fine thing to cut oneself off from the lusts that are in the world, for “every passion of the flesh wages war against the Spirit,” and “neither fornicators nor the effeminate nor homosexuals will inherit the Kingdom of God,” nor those who do perverse things. Wherefore it is necessary to refrain from all these things, and be obedient to the presbyters and deacons as unto God and Christ. And the young women must live with blameless and pure conscience.

마찬가지로 젊은이들도 모든 일에 흠이 없어야 하고, 특히 정결함을 마음에 두고 모든 악에서 벗어나야 합니다. 세상에 대한 욕망을 없앰이 좋은 것입니다. 왜냐하면 “모든 육체의 열정이 성령을 대적하고”1), “간음하는자, (여자역할 하는) 게이, 동성애자는 하나님 나라를 상속받을 수 없고”2), 사악한 짓들을 하는 자들도 그러하기 때문입니다. 그러므로 이 모든 것들을 멀리하고, 하나님과 그리스도께 하듯 장로들과 집사들에게 복종함이 필요합니다. 처녀들도 흠 없이 정결한 양심으로 살아야 합니다.

6 Also the presbyters must be compassionate, merciful to all, turning back those who have gone astray, looking after the sick, not neglecting widow or orphan or one that is poor; but “always taking thought for what is honorable in the sight of God and of men,” refraining from all anger, partiality, unjust judgment, keeping far from all love of money, not hastily believing evil of anyone, nor being severe in judgment, knowing that we all owe the debt of sin. If, then, we pray the Lord to forgive us, we ourselves ought also to forgive; for we are before the eyes of the Lord and God, and “everyone shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ and each of us shall give an account of himself.” So then let us “serve him with fear and all reverence,” as he himself has commanded, and also the apostles who preached the gospel to us and the prophets who foretold the coming of the Lord.

6장 장로들도 모두에게 인정이 많고 자비로워야 하고, 그리하여 그릇된 길로 간 자들을 돌아오게 하고, 병자들을 돌보고, 과부, 고아, 가난한 자를 살피고, “항상 하나님과 사람의 시각에 명예로운 일에 관심을 두고”1), 모든 분냄, 불공평, 불공정한 판결을 하지 않고, 절대 돈을 사랑하지 않고, 어떤 자의 악행(죄)을 섣불리 믿지 말고(단정하지 말고), 우리 모두가 죗값을 물어야 하는 자들임을 깨달아 가혹한 판결을 하면 안 됩니다. 우리가 주께 용서를 구하는 기도를 드리니, 우리도 용서를 해야 합니다. 우리는 주님과 하나님의 눈 앞에 있고, “모든 자들이 그리스도의 심판석 앞에 설 것이고 우리 각자는 자신이 한 일을 고해야”2) 하기 때문입니다. 그러니 “그분을 두려움과 공경함으로 섬깁시다”3). 주께서 친히 그것을 명하셨고, 우리에게 복음을 전한 시도들과 주의 오심을 예언한 예언자들도 그리했습니다.

Let us zealous for that which is good, refraining from occasions of scandal and from false brethren, and those who bear in hypocrisy the name of the Lord, who deceive empty-headed people. 7 For “whosoever does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is antichrist”; and whosoever does not confess the testimony of the cross “is of the devil”; and whosoever perverts the sayings of the Lord to suit his own lusts and says there is neither resurrection nor judgment ㅡ such a one is the first-born of Satan. Let us, therefore, forsake the vanity of the crowd and their false teachings and turn back to the word delivered to us from the beginning, “watching unto prayer” and continuing steadfast in fasting, beseeching fervently the all-seeing God “to lead us not into temptation,” even as the Lord said, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

선한 일에 열심을 내어 추문이 되는 일을 피하고, 위선에 빠져 주를 믿고 무지한 자들을 속이는 거짓 형제들을 피합시다. 7장 “예수 그리스도께서 육체를 입고 오셨음을 부인하는 자들은 다 적그리스도이고”1), 십자가 증언의 고백을 거부하는 자는 다 “마귀로부터 왔고”2), 자신의 욕망을 채우기 위해 주의 말씀들을 왜곡하고 >부활도 심판도 없다<고 말하는 자, 이런 자는 사탄의 장자입니다. 그러므로 사람들의 허영심과 그들의 거짓 교훈들을 버리고 처음 우리에게 전달된 말씀으로 되돌아갑시다. 그리하여 “근신하여 기도하고”3), 금식을 계속하고, 만유를 통찰하시는 하나님께 “우리로 시험에 들지 않도록”4) 열심히 기도합시다. 주께서 “마음은 원이로되 몸이 약하다”5) 말씀하셨습니다.

8 Let us, then, hold steadfastly and unceasingly to our Hope and to the Pledge of our righteousness, that is, Christ Jesus, “who bore our sins in his own body on the tree, who committed no sin, neither was guile found on his lips”; but for our sakes he endured everything that we might live in him. Therefore let us be imitator of his patient endurance, and if we suffer for the sake of his name, let us glorify him. For he set us this example in his own Person, and this is what we believed.

8장 그러니 굳세게 중단없이 우리의 소망이시고 ‘우리의 의(義)의 보증’이신 분, 곧 >“십자가에서 우리의 죄를 자신의 몸으로 감당하시고, 죄도 없으시고 입에 교활함도 없으신”1) 예수 그리스도를 붙잡읍시다. 그분께서는 우리로 그분 안에 살도록 하시려 우리를 위해 모든 것을 참으셨습니다. 그러므로 그분의 참을성 있는 인내심을 본받읍시다. 우리가 그분의 이름을 위해 고난을 받으면 그분께 영광을 돌려야 하는 것입니다.2) 그분께서는 자신의 인격으로 이 본을 우리에게 보이셨고3), 우리가 이것을 믿습니다.

9 Now I exhort all of you to be obedient to the word of righteousness and to exercise all patient endurance, such as you have seen with your very eyes, not only in the blessed Ignatius and Zosimus and Rufus, but also in others who were of your membership, and in Paul himself and the rest of the apostles; being persuaded that all these “did not run in vain,” but in faith and righteousness, and that they are now in their deserved place with the Lord, in whose suffering they also shared. For they “loved not this present world,” but Him who died on our behalf and was raised by God for our sakes.

9장 이제 나는 여러분 모두에게 의(義)의 말씀에 순종하고, >복된 이그나티우스, 조시무스, 루푸스에게서 뿐만 아니라 여러분 가운데 있는 다른 자들, 바울 자신과 나머지 사도들에게서 여러분이 직접 목격한 인내들<과 같은 모든 인내들을 실천하시기를 권고합니다. 이 모든 자들이 “헛되이 달리지 않고”1) 믿음과 의(義) 가운데 달렸고, 이제 주님의 고난에 동참한 그들이 주님과 함께 자신들에게 합당한 자리에2) 앉아 있음을 여러분들이 아시기에 하는 권고입니다. 그들은 “이 세상을 사랑하지 않고”3) >우리를 위해 죽으시고 우리를 위해 하나님에 의해 부활하신 분4)<을 사랑했습니다.

10 Stand firm, therefore, in these things and follow the example of the Lord, “steadfast and immovable” in the faith, “loving the brotherhood,” “cherishing one another,” “fellow companions in the truth”; in “the gentleness of the Lord preferring one another” and despising no one. “Whenever you are able to do a kindness, do not put it off,” because “almsgiving frees from death.” All of you submit yourselves to one another, having your manner of life above reproach from the heathen, so that you may receive praise for your good works and the Lord may not be blasphemed on your account. “Woe to them, however, through whom the name of the Lord is blasphemed.” Therefore, all of you teach the sobriety in which you are yourselves living.

10장 그러므로 이러한 것들을 굳게 지키고 주님의 본을 따르십시오: “굳세고 흔들림 없는” 믿음, “형제를 사랑함”, “서로를 소중히 함”, “믿음 안에서 동료 됨”, “주님의 온유함 가운데 서로를 낫게 여김”, 그리고 사람을 경멸하지 않음. “여러분이 호의를 베풀 수 있을 때 그것을 연기하지 마십시오”1). “자선이 (사람을) 사망에서 건지기 때문입니다”2). 여러분 모두는 서로에게 복종하고, 이방인들로부터 비난받지 않는 삶이 되게 하고, 그리하여 여러분의 선행들로 여러분이 칭찬받고, 여러분으로 인해 주님의 영광을 가리지 않게 하십시오. “주님의 이름을 더럽히는 자들에게 화가 있을지어다.”3) 그러므로 여러분이 지키고 있는 ‘술취하지 않음’을 여러분 모두는 가르치십시오.

11 I have been exceedingly grieved on account of Valens, who was sometime a presbyter among you, because he so forgot the office that was given him. I warn you, therefore, to refrain from the love of money and be pure and truthful. “Shun evil of every kind.” For how shall he who cannot govern himself in these things teach another? If anyone does not refrain from the love of money he will be defiled by idolatry and so be judged as if he were one of the heathen, “who are ignorant of the judgment of the Lord.” Or “do we not know that the saints will judge the world,” as Paul teaches? However, I have neither observed nor heard of any such thing among you, with whom blessed Paul labored and who were his epistles in the beginning. Of you he was wont to boast in all the churches which at that time alone knew God; for we did not as yet know him. I am, therefore, very grieved indeed for that man and his wife. “May the Lord grant them true repentance.” But you, too, must be moderate in this matter; and “do not consider such persons as enemies,” but reclaim them as suffering and straying members, in order that you may save the whole body of you. For in doing this you will edify yourselves.

11장 한때는 여러분 가운데 장로였던 발렌스가 자기에게 주어진 직분을 아주 망각한 일로 인해 내가 매우 슬픕니다. 그러므로 나는 여러분에게 돈을 사랑하지 말고 깨끗하고 진실되라 경고합니다. “모든 종류의 악을 버리라”1). 이런 것들에 있어서 스스로를 제어할 수 없는 자가 어떻게 다른 자를 가르칠 수 있겠습니까? 사람이 돈을 사랑함을 떨치지 못하면 우상숭배로 더럽혀질 것이고, 그리하여 “주의 심판을 모르는”2) 이방인처럼 되어 심판받을 것입니다. 아니면 바울이 가르치듯 “성도들이 세상을 판단할 것”3)을 우리가 모릅니까? 하지만 나는 여러분 가운데 있던 그러한 것을 보거나 들은 적이 없습니다. 여러분은 복된 바울이 함께 일했던 자들이고, 서두의 그의 서신들입니다(그의 서신 앞부분에 언급되었습니다)4). 당시에 오직 홀로 하나님을 알고 있었던 그가 모든 교회들에서 자주 여러분을 자랑했습니다 (which의 선행사가 the churches라고 하면 의미가 이상합니다. 관계대명사는 때로는 선행사와 멀리 떨어져 있기도 하고, which가 선행사로 인간도 둘 수 있으니 여기서는 선행사가 앞의 he로 하는 게 맞는 것 같습니다. 관계사절을 he 바로 뒤에 두면 관계사절이 뒤에 있는 내용과 이어져 섞여 애매한 문장처럼 보여질 수도 있어 깔끔하게 관계사절을 분리시켜 저렇게 배치하는 경우도 있습니다). 우리가 당시에는 하나님을 알지 못했습니다. 그러므로 나는 그 남자와 그의 아내로 인해 매우 슬픕니다. “주께서 그들에게 참된 회개가 있게 해주시기를 빕니다”5). 그러나 여러분도 이 문제에 온건해야 합니다. 그리고 “그러한 자들을 원수들로 여기지 마시고”6), 병들고 방황하는 지체들인 그들을 교화하여 여러분의 몸 전체를 구하십시오. 이렇게 하는 가운데 여러분은 스스로를 교화할 것입니다.

12 I am confident, indeed, that you are well versed in the sacred Scriptures and that nothing escapes you ㅡ something not granted to me ㅡ only, as it is said in these Scriptures, “be angry but sin not” and “let not the sun go down on your anger.” Blessed is he who remembers this. I believe it is so with you. May God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal High Priest himself, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, build you up in faith and truth and in all gentleness, without anger and in patient endurance, in long-suffering, forbearance, and purity; and give you a portion and share among his saints, and to us also along with you, and to all under heaven who are destined to believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and in “his Father who raised him from the dead.” “Pray for all the saints.” “Pray also for emperors and magistrates and rulers,” and for “those who persecute and hate you,” and for “the enemies of the cross,” that your fruit may be manifest in all, so that you may be perfected in him.

12장 나는 실로 여러분이 성경을 잘 알고, (내게는 없는 능력인데) 오직 여러분만을 그 어떤 것도 피해갈 수 없음을 확신합니다. 성경에 “화를 내더라도 죄짓지 마라”, “화를 품은 채 저녁을 맞이하지 마라”1)라는 말씀 있습니다. 이 말씀을 기억하는 자가 복됩니다. 여러분이 그렇게 될 줄 믿습니다. 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하나님께서 여러분의 믿음, 진리, 완전한 온유함을 이루시고, 여러분의 분냄이 없는 참을 성 있는 인내심과 오래 참음과 관용과 정결함을 이루시길 기도합니다. 또한 그분께서 여러분이 그분의 성도들과 함께 상속과 몫을2) 받게 해주시길 기도합니다. 또한 여러분과 함께 우리와 >우리 주 예수 그리스도와 “죽음에서 그분을 살리신 그분의 아버지”3)를 믿기로 예정된4) 하늘 아래 모든 자들<에게도 그렇게 해주시기를 기도드립니다. “모든 성도들을 위해 기도하십시오”5). “황제들, 장관들, 지배자들”6), 그리고 “여러분을 핍박하고 미워하는 자들”7), “십자가의 적들”8)을 위해 기도하십시오. 그리하여 여러분의 열매가 모든 자들에게 드러나9) 여러분이 그분 안에서 완전해지길 바랍니다10).

13 Both you and Ignatius have written me that if anyone is leaving for Syria he should take your letter along too. I shall attend to this if I have a favorable opportunity ㅡ either myself or one whom I shall send to represent you as well as me. We are sending you the letters of Ignatius, those he addressed to us and any others we had by us, just as you requested. They are herewith appended to this letter. From them you can derive great benefit, for they are concerned with faith and patient endurance and all the edification pertaining to the Lord. Of Ignatius himself and those who are with him, let us have any reliable information that you know.

I am sending you this letter by Crescens, whom I recently commended to you and now commend him again. He has lived with us blamelessly, and I believe he will do so among you. I also commend to you his sister, when she arrives among you. Farewell in the Lord Jesus Christ in grace, both you and all who are yours. Amen.
