The Lord’s Teaching to the Heathen by the Twelve Apostles:

1 There are two ways, one of life and one of death; and between the two ways there is a great difference.

열두 사도들이 이방인들에게 전해주는 주의 교훈:

1장 두 길들이 있다. 하나는 생명의 길이고 하나는 죽음의 길이다. 이 둘 사이에는 큰 차이가 있다.

 

Now, this is the way of life: “First, you must love God who made you, and second, your neighbor as yourself.” And whatever you want people to refrain from doing to you, you must not do to them.

이것이 생명의 길이다; “첫째, 너는 너를 만드신 하나님을 사랑하라, 둘째, 네 이웃을 네 자신처럼 사랑하라.”1) 그리고 타인이 네게 하기를 싫어하는 것을 너는 그에게 하지 마라.2)

What these maxims teach is this: “Bless those who curse you,” and “pray for your enemies.” Moreover, fast “for those who persecute you.” For “what credit is it to you if you love those who love you? Is that not the way the heathen act?” But “you must love those who hate you” and then you will make no enemies. “Abstain from carnal passions.” If someone strikes you “on the right cheek, turn to him the other too, and you will be perfect.” If someone “forces you to go one mile with him, go along with him for two”; if someone robs you “of your overcoat, give him your suit as well.” If someone deprives you of “your property, do not ask for it back.” (You could not get it back anyway!) “Give to everybody who begs from you, and ask for no return.” For the Father wants his own gifts to be universally shared. Happy is the man who gives as the commandment bids him, for he is guiltless! But alas for the man who receives! If he receives because he is in need, he will be guiltless. But if he is not in need he will have to stand trial why he received and for what purpose. He will be thrown into prison and have his action investigated; and “he will not get out until he has paid back the last cent.” Indeed, there is a further saying that relates to this: “Let your donation sweat in your hands until you know to whom to give it.”

이 금언들의 가르침은 이것이다: “너를 저주하는 자를 축복하라,” “네 원수를 위해 기도하라.” 또한 “너를 핍박하는 자들을 위해” 금식하라. “너를 사랑하는 자를 네가 사랑하면 네게 무슨 칭찬(명예)이 되겠느냐? 이방인들이 그렇게 하지 않느냐?” 그러나 “너는 너를 미워하는 자들을 사랑하라,”1) 그러면 네게 원수가 없으리라. “육체의 열망(정욕)을 억제하라.”2) 어떤 자가 “네 오른뺨을 치면, 그에게 왼뺨도 대주이라. 그러면 네가 완전해질 것이다.”3) 어떤 자가 “네게 오리를 함께 가자고 하면 십리를 함께 가주어라.” 어떤 자게 네가 “겉옷을 달라 하면 속옷도 주어라.”4) 어떤 자가 “네 소유를 빼앗으면, 달라고 하지 마라.” (어차피 돌려받지도 못할 것!) “네게 달라고 요청하는 모든 자에게 주고 갚기를 요구하지 마라.”5) 하나님 아버지께서는 그분의 선물들이 모든 자들에게 함께 누려지기를 원하신다. 주의 계명들이 명하는 대로 주는 자가 행복하다. 그가 무죄하니 그러하다! 그러나 받는 자는 슬프다! 궁핍할 때 받는 자는 무죄하다. 그러나 궁핍하지 않다면, 그는 왜 받았는지 또 무슨 목적으로 받았는지에 대해 심판받아야 할 것이다. 그는 감옥에 들어갈 것이고, 행위를 조사받은 후, “단돈 1원까지 다 물어낼 때까지 옥에서 나오지 못할 것이다.”6) 이와 관련된 말씀이 더 있다: “누구에게 줘야 할지 정하기 전까지 네 자선 기부금이 네 손 안에서 땀 흘리게 하라 (이 말은 남에게 도움을 주더라도 신중히 생각하여 판단하여 주라는 말임. 일하기 싫은 자에게 자기 생명 같은 돈을 주는 것은 하나님 뜻이 아니라는 말임. >손 안에서 땀을 흘리게 하라<는 손으로 꼭 쥐고 있으라는 말임).”7)

목사가 은퇴할 때 교회로부터 지나친 돈을 요구해 성도들의 모든 존경심을 깡그리 상실한 경우, 나중에 최후 심판 때 허리 휘는 노동형 선고 받아 다 배상해야 하지 않을까? 교회 돈으로 지들 자식교육 다 시켰으면 지들 자식들이 지들 봉양해야지, 왜 교회 성도들이 지들을 봉양해? 순 날강도들! 이 종교 사기꾼들은 처음부터 삯꾼들이었음. 그리고 은퇴하고 뭔 그 위대한 일을 하겠다고 교회 재정으로 자가용 몰고 다니시나? 느히들은 도저히 체면 상해 버스나 전철은 못 타지?)

2 The second commandment of the Teaching: “Do not murder; do not commit adultery”; do not corrupt boys; do not fornicate; “do not steal”; do not practice magic; do not go in for sorcery; do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant. “Do not covet your neighbor’s property; do not commit perjury; do not bear false witness”; do not slander; do not bear grudges. Do not be double-minded or double-tongued, for a double tongue is “a deadly snare.” Your words shall not be dishonest or hollow, but substantiated by action. Do not be greedy or extortionate or hypocritical or malicious or arrogant. Do not plot against your neighbor. Do not hate anybody; but reprove some, pray for others, and still others love more than your own life.

2장 >교훈<의 두 번째 계명: “살인하지 마라, 간음하지 마라,” 청소년들을 타락시키지 마라, 사통하지 마라, “도적질 하지 마라,” 마술을 행하지 마라, 마법을 행하지 마라, 낙태로 아이를 죽이거나 영아 살해 하지 마라. “네 이웃의 소유를 탐내지 마라, 위증 하지 마라, 거짓 증언 하지 마라,”1) 비방하지 마라, 원한을 품지 마라. 딴(두) 마음을 품거나 거짓말(일구이언) 하지 마라. 거짓 혀는 “치명적 올무”이기 때문이다.2) 네 말은 부정직하거나 빈말이어서는 안 되고, 행위로 나타나야 한다. 탐욕, 강탈, 위선, 악의, 교만을 버리라. 네 이웃을 해하는 악한 일을 꾀하지 마라. 사람을 미워하지 말고, 어떤 자들은 꾸짖고, 타인을 위해 기도하며, 네 목숨보다 다른 자들을 더욱 사랑하라.

3 My child, flee from all wickedness and from everything of that sort. Do not be irritable, for anger leads to murder. Do not be jealous or contentious or impetuous, for all this breeds murder.

My child, do not be lustful, for lust leads to fornication. Do not use foul language or leer, for all this breeds adultery.

My child, do not be a diviner, for that leads to idolatry. Do not be an enchanter or an astrologer or a magician. Moreover, have no wish to observe or heed such practices, for all this breeds idolatry.

My child, do not be a liar, for lying leads to theft. Do not be avaricious or vain, for all this breeds thievery.

My child, do not be a grumbler, for grumbling leads to blasphemy. Do not be stubborn or evil-minded, for all this breeds blasphemy.

3장 내 자녀들아, 모든 악함과 모든 악한 것들을 피하라. 흥분하지(초조해지지) 마라. 화는 살인을 불러일으킨다. 질투, 다툼, 충동을 피하라. 이 모든 것이 살인을 조장한다.

내 자녀들아, 음욕을 피하라. 음욕은 간음으로 이어진다. 지저분한 언행이나 추파 던지지 마라. 이 모든 것이 간음을 조장한다.

내 자녀들아, 점쟁이가 되지 마라. 그것은 우상숭배로 이어진다. 마법사, 점성가, 마술사가 되지 마라. 또한 그런 행위들을 보거나 마음에 둘 생각도 하지 마라. 이 모든 것이 우상숭배를 조장하기 때문이다. 탐욕과 허영심을 버리라. 이 모든 것이 도둑질을 야기한다.

내 자녀들아, 불평하지 마라. 불평은 하나님 모독으로 이어진다. 완고하고 악한 마음을 갖지 마라. 이 모든 것이 하나님 모독을 야기한다.

 

But be humble since “the humble will inherit the earth.” Be patient, merciful, harmless, quiet, and good; and always “have respect for the teaching” you have been given. Do not put on airs or give yourself up to presumptuousness. Do not associate with the high and mighty; but be with the upright and humble. Accept whatever happens to you as good, in the realization that nothing occurs apart from God.

그러나 겸손해라. “겸손한 자가 땅을 유산으로 받을 것”이기 때문이다.1) 인내하고, 자비롭고, 무해하고, 온화하며, 선해라. 그리고 항상 네게 전해진 “교훈을 존중하라.” 으스대거나 주제넘지 마라. 높은 자들, 힘 있는 자들과 교제하지 말고, 올바르고 겸손한 자들과 함께 하라. 하나님 없이는 그 어떤 일도 발생하지 않음을 알고, 네게 일어난 모든 일들을 선한 것으로 받아들여라.

4 My child, day and night “you should remember him who preaches God’s word to you,” and honor him as you would the Lord. For where the Lord’s nature is discussed, there the Lord is. Every day you should seek the company of saints to enjoy their refreshing conversation. You must not start a schism, but reconcile those at strife. “Your judgments must be fair.” You must not play favorites when reproving transgressions. You must not be of two minds about your decision.

4장 내 자녀들아, 밤낮으로 “너희는 하나님의 말씀을 너희에게 가르치는 자를 기억하고,” 주께 하듯 그를 공경해라. 주의 성품이 논하여지는 곳에 주께서 계시기 때문이다. 매일 성도들과 교제하여 그들과 격려의 대화를 나누라. 분열의 선봉에 서지 말고, 다투는 자들을 화해시키라. “네가 내리는 판결은 공정해야 한다.” 범죄를 책망할 때에 한쪽을 편들지 마라. 판단을 내릴 때 두 마음을 품지 마라.1)

Do not be one who holds his hand out to take, but shuts it when it comes to giving. If your labor has brought you earnings, pay a ransom for your sins. Do not hesitate to give and do not give with a bad grace; for you will discover who He is that pays you back a reward with a good grace. Do not turn your back on the needy, but share everything with your brother and call nothing your own. For if you have what is eternal in common, how much more should you have what is transient!

취하는 데에는 열심이고 주는 데에는 인색한 자가 되지 마라. 네가 일을 하여 수익이 났으면, 네 죄에 대한 속죄헌금을 내라. 베푸는 데 망설이지 말고, 억지로 베풀지 마라. 네게 기쁜 마음으로 보상해 주시는 분이 누구신지 너는 알게 될 것이기 때문이다. 궁핍한 자들을 외면하지 말고, 모든 것을 네 형제와 함께 나누고, 아무것도 네 것이라 주장하지 마라. 영원한 것(영생과 천국 & 하나님(!))을 네가 (타인과) 공동으로 소유하고 있다면, 이 땅의 것(일시적인 것)은 얼마나 더 많이 네가 타인과 공유해야 할까!

 

Do not neglect your responsibility to your son or your daughter, but from their youth you shall teach them to revere God. Do not be harsh in giving orders to your slaves and slave girls. They hope in the same God as you, and the result may be that they cease to revere the God over you both. For when he comes to call us, he will not respect our station, but will call those who the Spirit has made ready. You slaves, for your part, must obey your masters with reverence and fear, as if they represented God.

네 자녀들에 대한 의무를 소홀히 하지 말고, 어려서부터 하나님 경외하기를 가르치라. 네 남종과 여종에게 가혹하게 명령하지 마라. 너처럼 그들도 같은 하나님을 소망하고 있고, 너와 종들 위에 계신 하나님을 그 종들이 섬기기를 그치는 결과가 나올 수도 있다. 그분께서 우리를 부르실 때에 우리의 신분을 보지 않으시고, 성령께서 준비시켜 놓은 자들을 부르시기에 그러하다. 너희 종들도 너희 상전들이 하나님을 대리하고 있다 여기고 그들에게 복종해라.

 

You must hate all hypocrisy and everything which fails to please the Lord. You must not forsake “the Lord’s commandments,” but “observe” the ones you have been given, “neither adding nor subtracting anything.” At the church meeting you must confess your sins, and not approach prayer with a bad conscience. That is the way of life.

모든 위선과 주님을 기쁘시게 못하는 모든 것을 배격하라. “주의 계명들”을 버리지 말고, 그것들에 “더하거나 감하지 말고” 네가 받은 그대로의 계명들을 “지키라.”1) 교회 모임들에서 자신의 죄를 고백하고, 더러운 양심으로 기도하지 마라. 이것이 생명의 길이다. (멍청하고, 건방지고, 성경에 무식한 사악한 일부 자칭 신학자들이 동성애를 두둔했다.)

5 But the way of death is this: First of all, it is wicked and thoroughly blasphemous: murders, adulteries, lusts, fornications, thefts, idolatries, magic arts, sorceries, robberies, false witness, hypocrisies, duplicity, deceit, arrogance, malice, stubbornness, greediness, filthy talk, jealousy, audacity, haughtiness, boastfulness.

5장 그러나 사망의 길은 이것이다. 무엇보다도 그것은 사악하고 대단히 불경스럽다: 살인, 간음, 음란, 사통, 도둑질, 우상숭배, 마술, 요술, 강도질, 위증, 위선, 표리부동, 속임, 교만, 악의, 완고함, 탐욕, 음담패설, 질투, 뻔뻔함, 오만, 자랑.1)

Those who persecute good people, who hate truth, who love lies, who are ignorant of the reward of uprightness, who do not “abide by goodness” or justice, and are on the alert not for goodness but for evil: gentleness and patience are remote from them. “They love vanity,” “look for profit,” have no pity for the poor, do not exert themselves for the oppressed, ignore their Maker, “murder children,” corrupt God’s image, turn their backs on the needy, oppress the afflicted, defend the rich, unjustly condemn the poor, and are thoroughly wicked. My children, may you be saved from all this!

선한 자들을 핍박하고, 거짓말을 좋아하고, 바른 일의 보상에 무지하고, “선(善)”1)과 공의를 따르지 않고, 선이 아니라 악에 관심이 있는 자들, 이들에게 온유와 인내는 없다. “그들은 허황한 것을 좋아하고2),” “이익을 좇으며3),” 가난한 자들을 불쌍히 여기지 않고, 억압받는 자들을 위해 힘쓰지 않고, 자신들의 창조주를 무시하고, “아이들을 죽이고4),” 하나님의 형상을 부패하게 만들고, 궁핍한 자들에 무관심하고, 고통받는 자들을 억압하고, 부자들을 두둔하고, 가난한 자들을 부당하게 정죄하고, 철저히 악하다. 내 자녀들아, 이 모든 것에서 구원받을지어다!

6 See “that no one leads you astray” from this way of the teaching, since such a one’s teaching is godless.

If you can bear the Lord’s full yoke, you will be perfect. But if you cannot, then do what you can.

Now about food: undertake what you can. But keep strictly away from what is offered to idols, for that implies worshiping dead gods.

6장 그 누구라도 이 교훈의 길에서 “너희를 벗어나게 하여 그릇된 길로 인도하지 않도록”1) 주의하라. 그런 자들의 가르침은 불경스럽다.

네가 주의 멍에를 온전히 지면, 너는 완전해질 것이다. 그렇지 못하면, 할 수 있는 것을 하라.

음식에 관하여: 네가 해도 되는 것을 하라. 그러나 우상에게 바쳐진 것은 엄히 멀리하라. 그것은 죽은 신들을 경배함을 의미하기 때문이다.

7 Now about baptism: this is how to baptize. Give public instruction on all these points, and then “baptize” in running water, “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”If you do not have running water, baptize in some other. If you cannot in cold, then in warm. If you have neither, then pour water on the head three times “in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Before the baptism, moreover, the one who baptizes and the one being baptized must fast, and any others who can. And you must tell the one being baptized to fast for one or two days beforehand.

7장 세례에 관하여: 세례 주는 방식은 이러하다. 이 모든 관점들에 대한 공개 교육을 실시하고, 흐르는 물에서, “아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주라.”1) 흐르는 물이 없다면, 다른 곳에서 세례를 주라. 찬 물에서 할 수 없다면 더운 물에서 하라. 그 둘 다 없다면, “아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로” 세 번 머리에 물을 부어라. 또한 세례식 전에 세례자(세례식 집전자)와 수세자(세례 받는 자)는 금식해야 하고, 다른 자들도 금식할 수 있으면 하라. 수세자에게 세례 전 하루나 이틀 금식하라 하라.

8 Your fasts must not be identical with those of the hypocrites. They fast on Mondays and Thursdays; but you should fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.

You must not pray like the hypocrites, but “pray as follows” as the Lord bid us in his gospel:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your Kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us today our bread for the morrow; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but save us from the evil one, for yours is the power and the glory forever.”

You should pray in this way three times a day.

8장 너희의 금식은 위선자들의 금식과 달라야 한다.1) 그들은 월요일과 목요일 금식하나, 너희는 수요일과 금요일 금식하라. 너희는 위선자들처럼 기도하지 말고2), 주께서 그분의 복음서에서 명하신 바와 같이 “이렇게 기도하라”3):

“하늘에 계신 우리 아버지, 이름을 거룩히 하시고, 주의 나라가 임하고, 주의 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것같이 땅에서도 이루어질 것입니다. 내일의 양식을 오늘 우리에게 주시고, 우리가 우리에게 죄 지은 자를 용서한 것처럼 우리 죄를 용서하여 주소서. 우리로 시험에 들게 하지 마시고, 다만 악한 자로부터 우리를 구하소서. 권세와 영광이 영원히 주님께 있습니다.”

너희는 매일 세 번 이같이 기도하라.

9 Now about the Eucharist: This is how to give thanks:

First in connection with the cup:

“We thank you, our Father, for the holy vine of David, your child, which you have revealed through Jesus, your child. To you be glory forever.”

Then in connection with the piece [broken off the loaf]:

“We thank you, our Father, for the life and knowledge which you have revealed through Jesus, your child. To you be glory forever.

“As this piece [of bread] was scattered over the hills and then was brought together and made one, so let your Church be brought together from the ends of the earth into your Kingdom. For yours is the glory and the power through Jesus Christ forever.”

You must not let anyone eat or drink of your Eucharist except those baptized in the Lord’s name. For in reference to this the Lord said, “Do not give hat is sacred to dogs.”

9장 성찬식에 관하여: 이것은 감사의 방식이다.

먼저 잔과 관련하여1):

“다윗의 거룩한 포도나무, >주님의 아이 예수를 통하여 주께서 계시하신 주의 아이<로 인하여 우리는 우리의 하나님 아버지, 주님께 감사드립니다. 영광이 주님께 영원하기를 비옵니다.”

다음으로 [빵 덩어리에서 떼어낸] 조각과 관련하여:

“주의 아이 예수를 통하여 주께서 계시하신 생명과 지식으로 인하여, 우리는 우리의 하나님, 주께 감사드립니다. 주님께 영광이 영원히 있기를 비옵니다.

“이 [빵] 조각이 언덕들에 흩어졌다가 함께 모아져 하나가 되듯2), 주의 교회도 땅끝으로부터 모아져 주의 나라를 이루게 하소서. 예수 그리스도를 통하여 영광과 권세가 주께 영원히 있기를 비옵니다.”

너희는 주의 이름으로 세례 받은자가 아니면 절대 아무도 성찬식의 빵과 포도주를 먹고 마시게 해서는 안 된다. 이와 관련하여 주께서 “거룩한 것을 개에게 주지 마라”3) 하셨다.

10 After you have finished your meal, say grace in this way:

“We thank you, holy Father, for your sacred name which you have lodged in our hearts, and for the knowledge and faith and immortality which you have revealed through Jesus, your child. To you be glory forever.

“Almighty Master, ‘you have created everything’ for the sake of your name, and have given men food and drink to enjoy that they may thank you. But to us you have given spiritual food and drink and eternal life through Jesus, your child.

“Above all, we thank you that you are mighty. To you be glory forever.

“Remember, Lord, your Church, to save it from all evil and to make it perfect by your love. Make it holy, ‘and gather’ it ‘together from the four winds’ into your Kingdom which you have made ready for it. For yours is the power and the glory forever.”

“Let Grace come and let this world pass away.”

“Hosanna to the God of David!”

“If anyone is holy, let him come. If not, let him repent.”

“Our Lord, come!”

“Amen.”

In the case of prophets, however, you should let them give thanks in their own way.

 

10장 식사를 마치면, 이렇게 감사기도 하라:

“주께서 우리 마음에 두신 주의 거룩한 성호로 인하여, 주께서 주의 아이 예수를 통하여 계시하신 지식과 신앙과 불사(不死)로 인하여 우리는 거룩하신 아버지 하나님, 주께 감사드립니다. 주님께 영광이 영원하길 비옵니다.

“전능하신 주님, 주의 이름을 위하여 ‘주께서 만물을 지으셨고,’ 인간들에게 감사 받으시기 위하여 주께서는 그들에게 양식과 음료를 누리도록 주셨습니다. 하지만 주께서는 주의 아이 예수님을 통하여 영적 양식과 음료와 영생을 주셨습니다.

“무엇보다도 우리는 주께서 강하심에 주께 감사드립니다. 주께 영광이 영원히 있기를 비옵니다.

“주님, 주의 교회를 기억하시어 모든 악에서 구하시고 주의 사랑으로 완전케 하소서. 이 교회를 거룩하게 하시고, 사방으로부터 그것을 모아 >주께서 그것을 위해 준비하신 주의 나라<를 이루게 하소서. 권능과 영광이 영원히 주의 것이옵니다.”

“은혜이신 분은 오시고 이 세상은 끝나게 하소서.”

“다윗의 하나님께 호산나!”1)

“거룩한 자는 오라. 거룩지 않으면 회개하라.”2)

“우리 주여, 오시옵소서!”3)

“아멘.”

11 Now, you should welcome anyone who comes your way and teaches you all we have been saying. But if the teacher proves himself a renegade and by teaching otherwise contradicts all this, pay no attention to him. But if his teaching furthers the Lord’s righteousness and knowledge, welcome him as the Lord.

11장 여러분은 여러분에게 와서 우리가 말한 것을 가르치는 자가 누구든, 그를 영접하시기 바랍니다. 그러나 그 교사가 배교자임이 드러나고, 달리 가르침으로 이 모든 것을 부인한다면, 그와 상관하지 마시기 바랍니다. 그러나 그의 가르침이 주님의 의와 그분에 대한 지식을 증대시키면, 주님을 영접하듯 그를 영접하십시오.

 

Now about the apostles and prophets: Act in line with the gospel precept. Welcome every apostle on arriving, as if he were the Lord. But he must not stay beyond one day. In case of necessity, however, the next day too. If he stays three days, he is a false prophet. On departing, an apostle must not accept anything save sufficient food to carry him till his next lodging. If he asks for money, he is a false prophet.

While a prophet is making ecstatic utterances, you must not test or examine him. For “every sin will be forgiven,” but this sin “will not be forgiven.” However, not everybody making ecstatic utterances is a prophet, but only if he behaves like the Lord. It is by their conduct that the false prophet and the [true] prophet can be distinguished. For instance, if a prophet marks out a table in the Spirit, he must not eat from it. If he does, he is a false prophet. Again, every prophet who teaches the truth but fails to practice what he preaches is a false prophet. But every attested and genuine prophet who acts with a view to symbolizing the mystery of the Church, and does not teach you to do all he does, must not be judged by you. His judgment rests with God. For the ancient prophets too acted in this way. But if someone says in the Spirit, “Give me money, or something else,” you must not heed him. However, if he tells you to give for others in need, no one must condemn him.

12 Everyone “who comes” to you “in the name of the Lord” must be welcomed. Afterward, when you have tested him, you will find out about him, for you have insight into right and wrong. If it is a traveler who arrives, help him all you can. But he must not stay with you more than two days, or, if necessary, three. If he wants to settle with you and is an artisan, he must work for his living. If, however, he has no trade, use your judgment in taking steps for him to live with you as a Christian without being idle. If he refuses to do this, he is trading on Christ. You must be on your guard against such people.

13 Every genuine prophet who wants to settle with you “has a right to his support.” Similarly, a genuine teacher himself, just like a “workman, has a right to his support.” Hence take all the first fruits of vintage and harvest, and of cattle and sheep, and give these first fruits to the prophets. For they are your high priests. If, however, you have no prophet, give them to the poor. If you make bread, take the first fruits and give in accordance with the precept. Similarly, when you open a jar of wine or oil, take the first fruits and give them to the prophets. Indeed, of money, clothes, and of all your possessions, take such first fruits as you think right, and give in accordance with the precept.

14 On every Lord’s Day ㅡ his special day ㅡ come together and break bread and give thanks, first confessing your sins so that your sacrifice may be pure. Anyone at variance with his neighbor must not join you, until they are reconciled, lest your sacrifice be defiled. For it was of this sacrifice that the Lord said, “Always and everywhere offer me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, says the Lord, and my name is marveled at by the nations.”

15 You must, then, elect for yourselves bishops and deacons who are a credit to the Lord, men who are gentle, generous, faithful, and well tried. For their ministry to you is identical with that of the prophets and teachers. You must not, therefore, despise them, for along with the prophets and teachers they enjoy a place of honor among you.

15장 그러므로 여러분은 주님께 영광이 되고, 온유하고, 관대하며, 잘 훈련된 감독과 집사들을 세우십시오. 여러분을 위한 그들의 사역은 예언자나 교사와 같습니다. 그러므로 여러분들은 그들을 경멸하지 말아야 합니다. 그들은 여러분 가운데 예언자, 교사와 함께 존중받는 지위에 있기 때문입니다.

 

Furthermore, do not reprove each other angrily, but quietly, as you find it in the gospel. Moreover, if anyone has wronged his neighbor, nobody must speak to him, and he must not hear a word from you, until he repents. Say your prayers, give your charity, and do everything just as you find it in the gospel of our Lord.

또한 여러분은 복음에서 볼 수 있는 바와 같이 화내지 말고 조용히 서로를 책망하기 바랍니다. 더욱이 어떤 자가 다른 형제에게 잘못을 범하면, 그가 회개하기 전에는 아무도 그에게 말을 하거나 그에게 말을 듣지 마십시오. 기도하고, 자선을 베풀고, 주의 복음에서 배운 그대로 모든 것을 행하십시오.

 

16 “Watch” over your life: do not let “your lamps” go out, and do not keep “your loins ungirded”; but “be ready,” for “you do not know the hour when our Lord is coming.” Meet together frequently in your search for what is good for your souls, since “a lifetime of faith will be of no advantage” to you unless you prove perfect at the very last. For in the final days multitudes of false prophets and seducers will appear. Sheep will turn into wolves, and love into hatred. For with the increase of iniquity men will hate, persecute, and betray each other. And then the world deceiver will appear in the guise of God’s Son. He will work “signs and wonders” and earth will fall into his hands and he will commit outrages such as have never occurred before. Then mankind will come to the fiery trial “and many will fall away” and perish, “but those who persevere” in their faith “will be saved” by the Curse himself. Then “there will appear the signs” of the Truth: first the sign of stretched-out [hands] in heaven, then the sign of “a trumpet’s blast,” and thirdly the resurrection of the dead, though not of all the dead, but as it has been said: “The Lord will come and all his saints with him. Then the would will see the Lord coming on the clouds of the sky.”

16장 여러분의 삶을 “감시하십시오”: “여러분의 등불”이 꺼지지 않게 하고, “여러분의 허리띠를 풀어놓지” 말며, “주께서 오시는 때를 알지 못하기에, 준비하십시오.”1) 여러분의 영혼에 유익이 되는 것을 좇아 자주 모이십시오. 마지막에 여러분이 완전한 자가 안 되면 여러분에게 “평생의 신앙의 삶이 무가치해지기 때문입니다.”2) 마지막 때에 많은 거짓 예언자들과 유혹하는 자들이 나타날 것입니다. 양들은 늑대들로, 사랑은 미움으로 바뀔 것입니다. 불의가 많아지면 사람들은 미워하고, 핍박하고, 서로를 배반할 것입니다. 그 때에는 세상을 속이는 자가 하나님의 아들의 모습으로 나타날 것입니다. 그는 “표적과 기사”3)를 일으키고, 세상은 그의 손아귀에 떨어져 그는 전에 없던 극악한 죄를 범할 것입니다. 그 때에는 살람들은 불시련을 당할 것이고, “많은 자들이 떨어져 나가”4) 멸망할 것이나, 믿음으로 “인내하는 자들은” 저주이신 분5)에 의해 “구원받을 것입니다.”6) 그리고는 진리이신 분의 “표적들이 나타날 것입니다”7): 먼저는 하늘로 펼쳐진 [손의] 표적, 그 다음으로는 “나팔소리”8)의 표적, 셋째로는 죽은 자들의 부활입니다. 이때 모든 죽은 자들을 말하는 건 아니고 다음과 같은 말씀에 따라 그렇게 됩니다: “주님께서 그분의 모든 성도들과 함께 오실 것이다. 그러면 세상은 주께서 하늘 구름을 타고 오시는 것을 볼 것이다.”9)

(서기 100년 경의 기독교 윤리가 이 정도로 훌륭합니다. 기독교 윤리 실종인 이 시대 기독교가 겸허히 100% 다 받아들여 거듭나야겠습니다. 초대교회에서 중시되었던 기독교 윤리 덕목들을 지금의 기독교 윤리학이 충실히 보존하고 있는지 모르겠습니다. 적어도 교회 세습에 대해 아무 말도 못하는 기독교 윤리라면 실패한 학문 아닙니까? 요즘 근로자들이 사주를 적으로 여기고 악한 노조활동을 하여 회사까지 망하게 하는데, 기독교적으로 매우 사악한 짓임!

그리고 성경을 읽다가 세례 요한이 야생 꿀과 메뚜기를 먹었다는 것을 보고, 단독 사역하는 자들에게는 마음을 쓰는 하나님의 백성이 별로 없구나 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 이른바 거듭난(!) 사람들이 요한에게 세례를 받으러 오기는 좋아하면서 음식 갖다주는 생각은 아예 없어서 그 하나님의 종이 벌에 쏘여(!!)가며 양식을 스스로 해결했구나 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그러나 주의 종의 어려움을 생각하여 대접하기를 마다하지 않았던 사르밧 과부는 하나님께서 절대 굶어죽게 안 하셨고, 수넴 여인도 자식을 얻는 복을 받았습니다. 선지자를 대접한 하나님의 백성은 선지자가 받을 상을 받습니다. 예수님의 약속입니다(마10:41). 그리고 굶어죽는 하나님의 종 없습니다.

그리고 성경에 여러 직분들이 나오는데, 초대교회의 기독교는 개교회의 담임자로 감독(지금의 담임 목회자)이 있었고, 감독을 도와 그의 사역을 집행하는 동역자로서의 집사들, 그리고 감독과 함께 교회를 이끄는 장로들이 있었으며, 각 교회들에 대한 본래적 의미의 감독과 지도와 교육을 하는 사도, 예언자, 교사라는, 영적으로 개교회 감독과 동등이나 그 이상의 상위 권위의 직분들이 있어 (때로는 순회하며) 교회들을 지도했던 것으로 보임.)
