성직매매가 뭔지 더 잘 이해하기 위해서는 그것의 기원을 살펴보는 게 좋습니다. 성경 구약과 신약 다 이 이단이 발견됩니다. 이 죄의 두 원조(元祖)들이 있는데, 구약에서는 게하시이고 신약에서는 시몬입니다. 전자는 나아만의 문둥병을 고친 대가로 선물을 취했고, 후자는 안수함으로 성령을 받게 해주는 능력을 사도로부터 얻기 위해 돈을 주려했습니다. 하지만 나는 성직매매자들에 대해 좀 더 명확히 기술(記述)하고 싶은데, 이는 그들이 아비를 따라 같은 길을 가는 자식들과 같기 때문입니다.

잊지 마십시오. 시몬을 따르는 자들을 시몬주의자들이나 시몬의 후예들이라고 하듯, 게하시를 따르는 자들은 게하시의 후예들, 발람을 따르는 자들은 발람의 후예들, 여로보암을 따르는 자들은 여로보암의 후예들, 유다를 따르는 자들은 유다의 후예들이라 합니다. 여러분이 그들을 바로 부르고자 하신다면 그들을 게하시와 시몬과 발람과 유다의 자손들이라 하십시오. 발람이 돈을 받고 이방인 왕에게 예언을 했기 때문에 그들이 발람의 자손들입니다. 왜냐하면 그들이, 돈 받고 면죄부를 파는 사기꾼들의 경우처럼, 돈 때문에 돈을 얻기 위해 설교를 하기 때문입니다. 그런 자들에 대해 구세주께서 예언하신 게 있습니다. “거짓 선지자가 일어나 많은 사람들을 미혹할 것이다(마24:11).” 마찬가지로 성 베드로도 말했습니다. “민간에 또한 거짓 선지자들이 일어났었나니 이와 같이 너희 중에도 많은 자들을 멸망으로 이끌 거짓 선생들이 있으리라(벧후2:1).” 또한 계속하여 베드로는 그들이 자신들을 구원하신 분을 부인하고 자신들의 조속한 멸망을 자초했다고 말합니다. “여럿이 저희 호색하는 것을 좇으리니 이로 인하여 진리의 도가 훼방을 받을 것이요, 저희가 탐심을 인하여 지은 말을 가지고 너희로 이를 삼으니(너희를 통해 이익을 취하니) 저희 심판은 옛적부터 지체하지 아니하며 저희 멸망은 자지 아니하느니라(벧후2:2-3).” 그의 말이 계속됩니다. “탐심이 가득한 귀(눈)를 가지고, 저주의 자식들이 되어, 바른 길을 떠나, 불의한 삯을 사랑한 발람의 길을 좇아 그들이 그릇된 길로 갔다(벧후2:14-15).”

그와 같이 성 베드로는 발람의 자손들을 묘사했고, 그런 자들이 지금 많이 있습니다. ... 그러한 자들이 바로 거짓말하고 간음하고 탐욕에 빠진 자들입니다. 그들은 오늘날 자신들의 악한 행실로 그리스도를 부인하고, 그리스도의 바른 길을 비웃고, 허무맹랑한 개념들과 사면(赦免)들을 만들어 내서 거짓 면죄부로 사람들을 등쳐먹고 있습니다. 그들은 모든 죄와 형벌을 면제해준다며 면죄부를 발부하고 있습니다. 더군다나 교황에게 죄와 형벌에 대항하고 면죄부를 발행할 수 있는 권한이 있다고 교사들이 주장함으로 그들의 행위를 정당화했습니다. 그리하여 교사들로부터 지원을 받아 그들 모두는 더욱 담대하게 거짓말로 사람들을 속였습니다. ... 그러나 선하신 주께서는 신실한 사제들에게 당신의 성령을 주시어 그들로 하여금 용기를 갖고 그런 거짓말쟁이들에 대항하여 설교하게 하셨고, 또한 신실한 평신도들에게도 성령을 주시어 그들로 하여금 담대히 하나님을 위해 목숨을 걸게 하셨습니다. 그들은 프라하에서 거짓 설교에 대항하다 참수 당했습니다. 어떤 자들은 프라하 성당의 소년성가대원들에 의해 찢겼고, 채찍에 맞고, 폭행 당했습니다. 어떤 자들은 유죄판결 받고, 모욕당하고, 옥에 갇혔습니다. 오 사랑하는 그리스도시여, 주께서는 여전히 주님의 신실한 성도들에게 주님의 진리를 고백할 수 있는 은사를 주시는군요. 주님께 영광을 드립니다!

For the better understanding of simony it is fitting to explain whence it originated. We have Scripture that this heresy existed both in the Old and the New Testaments. There are two fathers of that sin - one in the Old Testament, called Gehazi; the other in the New, called Simon. The first took gifts from Naaman for the cure of leprosy; the second offered money to the apostles for the power of granting to men the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands. But I wish to describe the simoniacs still more clearly, for they are like sons who, having the example of their evil fathers before them, put on their father's shoes.

Know, then, that as after Simon they are called simoniacs or Somonites, likewise after Gehazi they are known as Gehazites; after Balaam, Balamites; after Jeroboam, Jeroboamites; after Judas, Judasites. If you wish to designate them properly, call them the heirs of Gehazi, of Simon, of Balaam, and of Judas. They are the heirs of Balaam because he prophesied for hire to a pagan king, for they preach on account of and for money, as those deceivers who sell indulgences for money, of whom the Saviour prophesied, “There shall arise false prophets and shall lead many astray.” And Saint Peter likewise says, “There arose false prophets among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers who shall bring multitudes into destruction.” And he adds that they deny him who redeemed them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction: “And many shall follow their fornications, by reason of whom the way of the truth shall be blasphemed. And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you; whose sentence lingereth not, and whose destruction slumbereth not.” And further he says, “Having a hear exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam who loved the hire of wrongdoing.”

Thus does Saint Peter describe the sons of Balaam, of whom there are many... Such were those lying, fornicating, covetous men who this year by their evil deed denied Christ, ridiculing the right way of Christ, robbing men by their lying indulgences, having invented fantastic notions and absolutions. They granted indulgences for all sins and torments. Furthermore, the masters have confirmed their practice, defending them by writing that the pope has the right to go to war and to grant indulgences for sins and torments. Thus having the aid of the masters, they all the more boldly deceived the people with their lying speeches... But the good Lord gave to faithful priests his Holy Spirit so that they preached courageously against those liars, and likewise to faithful laymen, that they boldly risked their lives for God, for they were beheaded in Prague for opposing the lying sermons. Others were torn, scourged, and beaten by the choirboys in a Prague Church; still others were condemned, dishonored, and imprisoned. Glory be to thee, O dear Christ, that thou still grantest thy faithful such gifts to confess thy truth!
