오 주님, 주께서 양 날이 선 검, 즉 주님의 입의 말씀으로 저 발람의 후예들과 전쟁을 벌이시렵니까? 그들은 주님의 말씀의 검을 두려워하지 않고 있습니다. 그들은 대담하고도 그릇되게 설교하고 간음을 하고 있습니다! 주님의 사자(使者)인 주교들도 다 그들을 묵인합니다. 그 주교들 자신들도 간음을 범하고 있습니다! 그러나 주께서는 언제 그들과 전쟁을 벌이실지 아시고 계십니다. 그 때 이렇게 말씀하시겠지요. “너희 저주받은 자들아, 나를 떠나 영원한 불 속으로 들어가거라!” 주님의 종 엘리사를 통해 주께서 게하시와 그의 자손들에게 저주를 발하시어 문둥병이 영원한 그의 몫이 되게 하셨지요. ...

마찬가지로 성(聖) 베드로도 시몬에게 “저주(blessing은 반어적으로 쓰인 것임. 역주.)”를 발했지요. 시몬은 돈으로 능력을 사려했던 자입니다. 베드로가 그와 그의 후손들에게 말했습니다. “네가 하나님의 선물을 돈 주고 살 줄로 생각하였으니 네 은과 네가 함께 망할찌어다. 하나님 앞에서 네 마음이 바르지 못하니 이 도에는 네가 관계도 없고 분깃도 될 것도 없느니라. 그러므로 너의 이 악함을 회개하고 주께 기도하라. 혹 마음에 품은 것을 사하여 주시리라. 내가 보니 너는 악독이 가득하며 불의에 매인 바 되었도다(행8:20-23).”

이처럼 성 베드로가 시몬과 그의 성직매매 후손들을 저주했습니다. 그러나 베드로의 대리자들은 그렇지 못합니다. 누군가가 그들에게 더 많은 돈을 줄수록 주교직이나 다른 성직을 받을 가능성이 더 커집니다. 그러나 거룩한 레오 교황은 그러지 않았습니다. 그는 성직매매자들이 오로지 거짓 영(靈)을 주고받는다고 했습니다. 마찬가지로 성 그레고리는 그들이 저주받아 그리스도의 몸(교회)의 교제에서 단절되어 있다고 했습니다. 교황 파스칼은 그들이 시몬의 죄에 빠져있다고 했습니다. 나지안주스의 그레고리는 그들이 사제직을 유지하고 있지 못하고, 선지자 엘리사에 의해 문둥병자들이 되었고, 베드로에 의해 파멸당했고, 그리스도에 의해 성전에서 쫓겨났다고 합니다. 교령집에 그와 같이 기록되어 있습니다.

불행히도 그들은 이 모든 것에 관심을 두지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 자신들의 파멸을 감지하게 되어 정신이 번쩍 들 날이 올 것입니다. 그러나 이 이단이 심히 널리 퍼져 있으므로 순진한 자들의 눈을 열어 그들이 성직매매자들을 알아보고 그들에 대한 경계를 늦추지 않게 해야 합니다. 또한 문둥병이 머리에 감염되어 있는지 먼저 살펴보고 다른 부위들을 살펴보는 게 옳습니다. 아마 머리부터 발끝까지 몸 전체가 문둥병에 걸린 것을 발견하게 될 것입니다.

교황이 과연 성직매매자가 될 수 있는지 살펴봅시다. 아마 그렇지 못할 것 같기도 합니다. 왜냐하면 그가 자기가 원하는 것을 당연히 취하고 자신이 하고싶은 대로 하는 온 세상의 주(主)이기 때문일까요. 또 그는 죄를 지을 수 없는 가장 거룩한 아버지(father, 신부(神父))인 것 같기도 합니다. 그러나 명심하십시오. 많은 교황들이 이단들이었거나 악한 자들이었고 교황직에서 폐위되기도 했습니다. 그러한 것을 다 열거했다간 긴 이야기가 될 것입니다. 따라서 교황이 성직매매자가 될 수 있다는 것은 의문의 여지가 전혀 없습니다. 누군가가 교황이 성직매매나 다른 죄를 범할 수 없다고 주장하며 그를 두둔하려 한다면 그 자는 교황을 베드로나 다른 사도들보다 높이려는 겁니다. 교황이 온 세상의 주이고, 그 온 세상의 주는 당연히 자신이 원하는 모든 것을 취하고 자신이 하고싶은 대로 한다는 주장에 대해 나의 대답은 이렇습니다. 죄를 지을 수 없으시고, 세상을 다스릴 권한이 있으시고, 자신이 원하는 대로 하실 수 있는 단 한 분의 온 세상의 주님이 계시고, 그 주님은 바로 권능의 하나님이십니다. 교황이 죄를 범할 수 없는 가장 거룩한 아버지(신부)라는 주장에 나는 반대합니다. 왜냐하면 홀로 죄를 짓지 아니하시는 분은 바로 지극히 거룩하신 우리의 아버지, 곧 주 하나님이시기 때문입니다.

Wilt thou, O Lord, make war against those Balaamites with a two-edged sword, the sword of thy mouth? They fear not the sword of thy Word, for they boldly and falsely preach and fornicate! And there is no bishop - an angel of thine - who does not tolerate them, for the bishops themselves commit fornication! But thou knowest when thou shalt make war against them ... saying, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire!” Thou didst pronounce, through thy servant Elisha, a curse upon Gehazi and his posterity, so that leprosy might be his portion forever ...

Likewise, Saint Peter gave his “blessing” to Simon, who had requested power for money, having said to him and his posterity: “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this word; for thy heart is not right before God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perchance the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee. For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.”

Thus did Saint Peter bless Simon and his simoniacal sons. But not so the vicars of Peter; for the more money one offers them, the more likely he is to receive a bishopric or some other spiritual office. But not so the holy Pope Leo, who says that simoniacs give and receive only a lying spirit. Likewise Saint Gregory, who says that simoniacs are heretics and lose their priesthood; and Saint Ambrose, who says that they are damned and cut off from communion of the body of Christ; and Pope Paschal, who says that they are included in Simon's condemnation; and Grgory of Nazianzus, who says that they cannot remain in their priestly office, but are made lepers by the prophet Elisha and are sent into perdition by Peter, and have been driven out from the temple by Christ. Thus it is stated in the books of Decretals.

Unfortunately, they pay no attention to all this. Nevertheless, the time shall come when they shall attend when they perceive their condemnation. But since this heresy has greatly increased, it is well to open the eyes of the simple, that they may know the simoniacs and beware of them. Furthermore, it is proper to begin at the head and to examine whether it be defiled with that leprosy, and then to pass on to the other members. Perhaps it will be found that the whole body from head to foot is afflicted with leprosy.

Let us now inquire whether a pope may be a simoniac. It would appear that he cannot, since he is the lord of all the world, who by right takes whatever he wishes and does as he pleases; moreover, that he is the most holy father who cannot sin. But know that many popes were heretics or otherwise evil, and were deposed from the papacy. It would be a long story to write about such. Accordingly, have no doubt whether a pope can be a simoniac. If someone would defend him by saying that he cannot commit simony or other mortal sin, he would exalt him above Peter and the other apostles. As for the argument that he is the lord of all the world, who by right takes whatever he wishes and does as he pleases, the answer is that there is only one Lord of all the world who cannot sin and who has the right to rule the world and to do as he pleases, and that Lord is God the mighty one. Furthermore, as for the argument that the pope is the most holy father who cannot sin, I deny it; for it is our Father most holy, the Lord God, who alone cannot sin.
