How strange is the glory of God! He is glorified when sinners and the weak are received as friends. This is because it is his glory to be a benefactor to us.

하나님의 영광은 참 이상도 하다! 죄인들과 약한 자들이 친구로 받아들여질 때 그분께 영광이 된다. 이것은 >인간에게 은혜를 베푸는 분이 되는 것<이 그분의 영광이기 때문이다.

 

It is strange to call God a "God of hope." But this is the sign by which the apostle distinguishes the false gods from the true God.

하나님을 “소망의 하나님”이라 칭하는 것이 이상하다. 그러나 이것이 바로 사도 바울이 거짓 신(神)들과 참 하나님을 구분 짓는 표시다.

 

He is called the "God of hope," for where hope is, there one worships him.

그분께서는 “소망의 하나님”으로 불리신다. 소망이 있는 곳에 사람들이 그분을 경배하기 때문이다.

 

Knowledge without a love that edifies inflates a man.

>교화하는 사랑<이 없는 지식은 사람을 교만하게 한다.

 

Love that is without knowledge does not edify.

지식 없는 사랑은 사람을 교화할 수 없다.

 

We must note that preaching the gospel was a despised and dishonorable office, as it still is today. For it receives no honor and glory but is exposed to every kind of reproach, disgrace, persecution, etc., even to the extent of the saying of Christ: "For he that shall be ashamed of me before men, of him I shall be ashamed before the angels of God" (Luke 9:26).

우리가 알아야 할 것은 이것이다. 복음을 전파하는 일은, 오늘날에도 여전히 그러하듯이, 멸시당하고 불명예스런 직책이었다. 그 일은 존경과 명예를 받는 게 아니라 온갖 비난, 치욕, 핍박을 당한다. 심지어 그리스도께서는 이런 말씀도 하셨다: “사람들 앞에서 나를 부끄러워하는 자를 내가 하나님의 천사들 앞에서 부끄러워할 것이다(눅9:26).”

 

The gospel is an unspeakably wonderful gift that cannot be compared with any riches, honors, or pleasures.

복음은 부, 명예, 쾌락 따위와는 비교할 수 없는 형언할 수 없는 놀라운 선물이다.
