Now though the pope and his sects give Christ these names, yet in that they rob him of the effect, and take the significations of his names unto themselves, and make of him but an hypocrite, as they themselves be, they be right antichrists, and deny both the Father and Son. For they deny the witness that the Father bare unto his Son, and deprive the Son of all the power and glory that his Father gave him.

교황과 그의 파벌들이 그리스도께 이 명칭들을 사용하지만, 그럼에도 그들이 그분에게서 그 명칭들의 효력을 제거하고, 그분의 명칭들의 의미를 자신들에게 적용하고, 그분을 단지 그들 자신들처럼 위선자로 만들어 버렸기에, 그들이 바로 적그리스도들이고, 성부와 성자 둘 다를 부인하고 있다. 그들이 >성부께서 그분의 독생자에 대해 하신 증언<을 부인하고, 성자 하나님으로부터 >그분의 아버지 하나님께서 그분께 주신 모든 능력과 영광<을 제거하기 때문이다. Our nature is to work wickedness, and so blind thereto that it can see no righteousness. And then it followeth that we must be born anew in Christ, ere we can either do or yet know what is righteous. And in him we must first be made righteous ourselves, ere we can work righteous works; which conclusion is contrary unto the pope: for he saith, that the works do make the man righteous; and Christ's doctrine saith, that the man maketh the works righteous. A righteous man springeth out of righteous works, saith the pope's doctrine. Righteous works spring out of a righteous man, and a righteous man springeth out of Christ, saith Christ's doctrine. The works make the man righteous, which before was wicked, saith the pope. The works declare that the man is righteous, saith Christ's doctrine; but the man was first made righteous in Christ; and the Spirit of Christ taught him what righteousness was, and healed his heart, and made him consent thereto, and to have his lust in righteousness, and to work righteously.

악을 행하는 것이 우리의 본성이고, 게다가 우리의 본성은 너무 분별력이 없어 의(義)를 알 수 없다. 그리하여 내려지는 결론은, 우리가 >의로운 것<을 알거나 행할 수 있기 전에 먼저 그리스도 안에서 새로 태어나야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 우리가 의로운 일을 할 수 있기 전에 먼저 그분 안에서 우리 자신이 의인(義人)이 되어야 한다. 그런데 이 결론은 교황의 가르침과 배치(背馳)된다. 왜냐하면 그(교황)는 ‘행위가 사람을 의롭게 만든다’ 하고, 그리스도의 가르침은 ‘인간이 행위를 의롭게 한다’ 하기 때문이다. 교황의 가르침은 ‘의로운 행위에서 의로운 사람이 나온다’고 한다. 그리스도의 가르침은 ‘의로운 행위는 의로운 사람에게서, 의로운 사람은 그리스도로부터 나온다’고 한다. 교황은 ‘행위가 >전에 악했던 자<를 의롭게 만든다’고 한다. 그리스도의 가르침은 ‘행위가 >어떤 사람이 의롭다<고 선언하기는 하나, 사람은 먼저 그리스도 안에서 의로워져 있었고, 그리스도의 영이 그에게 >무엇이 의로운지< 가르치셨고, 그 자의 마음을 치료하셨고, 그 자를 그것(치료 받는 것?)에, 그리고 의를 갈망하게 하고, 의롭게 행하는 것에 동의하게 하셨다’고 한다.

The love of God us-ward is exceeding great, in that he hath made us his sons, without all deserving of us; and hath given us his Spirit through Christ, to certify our hearts thereof, in that we feel that our trust is in God, and that our souls have received health and power to love the law of God; which is a sure testimony that we are sons, and under no damnation.

우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑은 다음과 같은 점에서 지극히 크다: >우리의 공과(功過)와 전혀 상관없이 그분께서 우리를 그분의 자녀로 삼아주시고<, >이 사실을 우리에게 보증하시려고 그리스도를 통하여 그분의 영(靈)을 우리에게 주셨고<, >우리가 ‘우리가 하나님을 신뢰하고, 우리의 영혼이 하나님의 법(法)을 사랑할 수 있는 건강과 능력을 받았음’을 깨닫는다<. 이것이 바로 우리가 (그분의) 자녀들이고, 저주 아래 있지 않다는 분명한 증거다.

As darkness vanisheth away at the coming of the sun, and the world receiveth a new fashion, and is turned into light, and suddenly made glorious; even so when he appeareth, and we shall see him as he is, we shall, with the sight of him, be changed into the glory of his image, and made like him.

해가 뜨면 어둠이 사라지고, 세상이 새로운 모습을 보이고 밝아지고, 갑자기 영화로워지듯, 그분(주님)께서 나타나시고, 우리가 그분의 그 모습 그대로 보게 되면, 우리는 그분을 봄으로 그분의 영화로운 형상(그분의 형상의 영광)으로 변화되어 그분과 같이 될 것이다.

The faith and hope of a christian man are no dead, idle, or barren things; but lively, working, and fruitful.

기독교인의 믿음과 소망은 죽고, 게으르고, 비생산적이 아니라, 살아있고, 운동력 있고, 생산적이다.

Only the transgression of God's law is sin.

오직 >하나님의 법을 위반함<만이 죄이다.

Now all God's laws are contained in these two points; believe in Christ, and love thy neighbour. And these two points are the interpreting and expounding of all laws.

하나님의 모든 법은 이 두 요점들에 포함되어 있다: 그리스도를 믿고, 이웃을 사랑함. 그리고 이 두 요점들이 모든 법들의 해석이고 주석이다.

하나님과 마귀는 두 대립적 아비들, 두 대립적 원천들, 두 대립적 원인들이다. 한 분은 모든 선(善 )의, 다른 하나는 모든 악(惡)의 아비, 원천, 원인임.

Faith is the first, and also the root, of all commandments: and out of faith springeth love; and out of love, works. And when I break any commandment, I sin against love. For, had I loved, I had not done it. And when I sin against love, I sin against faith.

믿음은 모든 계명들의 첫째요, 뿌리이다. 믿음에서 사랑이 나오고, 사랑에서 행위가 나온다. 그리고 내가 어떤 계명을 위반하면, 사랑에 반(反)하여 죄를 짓는 것이다. 왜냐하면 내가 사랑했다면 그것을 하지 않았을 것이기 때문이다. 그리고 내가 사랑에 반(反)하여 범죄하면, 믿음에 반(反)하여 범죄하는 것이다.

Through the works we are sure that we continue in Christ, and Christ in us; and that his Spirit dwelleth in us. For his Spirit it is that keepeth us in faith, and through faith in love and through love in works.

행함(믿음의 실천)을 통하여 우리는 >우리가 그리스도 안에, 그리스도께서 우리 안에 있음<과 >그분의 영(靈)이 우리 안에 계심<을 확신하게 된다. 그분의 영(靈)이 >우리로 믿음 안에 거하게 하시고, 우리를 믿음으로 사랑 안에, 사랑으로 행함 안에 거하게 하시는 분<이시기 때문이다.

But God, of his grace only, quickened us in Christ; and raised us out of that death, and made us sit with Christ in heavenly things: that is, he set our hearts at rest, and made us sit fast in the life of Christ's doctrine, and unmoveable from the love of Christ.

그러나 하나님께서, 오직 그분의 은혜로, 그리스도 안에서 우리를 되살리셨고, 그 죽음에서 일으키셨고, 그리스도와 함께 천상의 것들 가운데 앉게 하셨다. 즉 그분께서는 우리를 안심시키셨고, 그리스도의 교훈의 삶을 확고히 살게 하셨고, 그리스도의 사랑에서 떠나지 않게 하셨다. (of는 from(분리, 원인)의 뜻이 있습니다.)

Love is the instrument wherewith faith maketh us God's sons, and fashioneth us like the image of God, and certifieth us that we so are.

사랑은 >믿음이 우리를 하나님의 자녀들이 되게 하는 수단<이고, 우리를 하나님의 형상으로 만들고, >우리가 정말로 그러한 자들임<을 우리에게 증명한다.

 

Blind reason saith God is a carved post, and will be served with a candle: but scripture saith God is love, and will be served with love. If thou love thy neighbour, then art thou the image of God thyself; and he dwelleth in the living temple of thine heart. And thy loving of thy neighbour for his sake is his service and worship in the spirit, and a candle that burneth before him in thine heart, and casteth out the light of good works before the world, and draweth all to God, and maketh his enemies leave their evil and come and worship him also.

무지한 이성은 하나님이 조각된 기둥이고, 촛불로 경배 받으실 것이라 한다. 그러나 성경은 하나님은 사랑이시고, 사랑으로 경배 받으실 것이라 한다. 당신이 이웃을 사랑하면, 당신 자신은 하나님의 형상이고, 그분께서는 살아있는 성전인 당신의 마음 안에 거하신다. 그리고 >그분 때문에 하는 당신의 이웃에 대한 당신의 사랑<이 영(靈)으로 그분께 드리는 예배이고, 당신의 마음 안에서 그분 앞에 빛나는 촛불이며, 세상에 선한 행위의 빛을 비추고, 모든 것을 하나님께로 이끌고, 그분의 원수들로 그들의 악에서 떠나 그분께 와서 그분을 섬기게 한다.

 

Faith is mother of all love: and as great as my faith is, so great is love, though faith cannot be perfectly seen, but through the works of love and in the fire of temptation.

믿음은 모든 사랑의 어머니이다. 내 믿음의 크기만큼 사랑의 크기도 그러하다. 비록 우리가 믿음을 완전히 볼 수는 없지만, 사랑의 행위를 통하여, 불(火)시험 중에는 볼 수 있다.

To believe that Jesus is Christ, is to believe in Christ: that is, to believe earnestly, and to put all thy trust therein, and to lay the price of thy soul thereupon.

>예수께서 그리스도이시다<를 믿는다는 것은 >그리스도를 신앙하는 것<, 즉 진지하게(진정으로) 믿고, 당신의 모든 신뢰를 거기에 두고, 당신의 영혼(의 값)을 거기에 거는 것을 의미한다.

Faith and love are inseparable.

믿음과 사랑은 일체(분리불가능)이다.

Impossible is possible, and easy too, where the love of Christ is believed.

그리스도의 사랑을 믿는다면 불가능은 가능이 되고, 또한 쉬운 것이 된다.

Our doctors say they cannot know whether they be in the state of grace; therefore they have not the faith of the apostles. And that they know it not is the cause why they rail on it.

​오늘날의 학자들은 >그들이 은혜 안에 있음<을 알 수 없다고 한다. 그러므로 그들은 사도들의 신앙이 없는 자들이다. 그리고 >그들이 그것(자신들이 은혜 안에 있음)을 모른다<는 것이 >그들이 그것에 대해 불만이 많은< 이유이다.

Christ is all, and the fountain of all; and of his fulness receive we all. And as he poureth the gifts of his grace upon them that believe in him, so he giveth them understanding to know the very God, and that they be in the very God, and that they have obtained that through his purchasing; and leaveth not his sheep in darkness. And the same Jesus Christ is very God and eternal life.

그리스도께서는 모든 것이시고, 모든 것의 근원이시며, 그분의 충만함으로부터 우리는 모든 것을 받는다. 그분께서 그분을 믿는 자들에게 그분의 은혜의 선물(은사)들을 부어주시듯, 그들에게 하나님을 아는 지혜를, >그들이 하나님 안에 있음과, 이 일이 그분(Jx)의 대속적 희생(purchasing)을 통하여 이룩되었음<을 아는 지혜를 주시고, 그분의 양들을 어둠 속에 두지 않으신다. 그리고 바로 이 예수 그리스도께서 참 하나님이시고 영생이시다.
