If the Church which Christ loves is one Church and it alone is cleansed with his washing, how can he who is not in the Church be loved by Christ or washed and cleansed with his washing?
그리스도께서 사랑하신 교회가 한 교회이고, 이 교회만이 그분의 씻으심으로 깨끗해졌다면, 어찌 교회 안에 있지 않는 자가 그리스도의 사랑을 받고 그분의 씻으심으로 씻기나?
Therefore, since the Church alone possesses the water of life and the power to baptize and purify, no one can argue the efficacy of Novatianist baptism and sanctification without first proving that Novatian is in the Church, or presides over it.
그러므로 오직 교회만이 생명의 물과 >세례와 정화(淨化)의 권한<이 있기에, 그 누구도 >먼저 노바티아누스가 교회 안에 있음을 혹은 그가 교회를 지도하고 있음을 입증하기 전<에는 노바티아누스주의자들의 세례와 성화(聖化)의 실효성을 주장면 안 된다.
It is in baptism that we all of us receive the remission of sins. Now the Lord proves clearly in his Gospel that sins can be remitted only through those who possess the Holty Spirit.
우리 모두가 죄용서를 받는 것은 세례를 통해서다. 주께서는 그분의 복음서에서 오직 성령을 받은 자들을 통해서만 죄가 사해질 수 있다고 분명 말씀하셨다.
In order that according to God’s ordinance and the truth of the Gospel they may receive the remission of sins and be sanctified and become temples of God, all without exception who come over to the Church of Christ from the adversaries and the antichrists are to be baptized with the baptism of the Church.

And now we have met again, seventy-one bishops of the province of Africa and of Numidia, and we have confirmed our previous decision, laying it down that there is one baptism, that of the catholic Church, and that in consequence we do not “rebaptize,” but baptize, all those who, coming as they do from adulterous and unhallowed water, have to be washed and sanctified by the true water of salvation.

The Novatianists are rebaptizing those whom they entice from us.

Where, and through whom, can be given that remission of sins which is given in baptism is plain enough. The Lord founded the Church upon Peter, and taught and demonstrated that unity originated in him.

To Peter first he gave the power to loose on earth whatever he loosed. After the resurrection he said to the apostles as well: “As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose soever sins ye remit, they shall be remitted unto him: whose soever ye retain, they shall be retained.” From this we perceive that only those who preside in the Church and are established by the law of the Gospel and the ordinance of the Lord have the right to baptize and give the remission of sins, while nothing can be bound or loosed outside, where there is no one with power to bind or loose.
그분께서는 맨 먼저 베드로에게 그가 땅에서 무엇이든지 풀 수 있는 권세를 주셨다. 그분께서는 부활 후에 사도들에게도 말씀하셨다: “아버지께서 나를 보내신 것같이 나도 너희를 (세상에) 보낸다. 그분께서 이 말씀을 마치시고 그들에게 숨을 쉬시며 말씀하셨다. 성령을 받아라. 너희가 누구의 죄든지 용서하면 그 죄가 용서받을 것이고, 누구의 죄든지 용서하지 않으면 죄가 그대로 있을 것이다. (요20:21-23)” 이로부터 우리는 교회에서 지도하고 복음의 법과 하나님의 법에 의해 세워진 자들만이 세례를 주고 죄를 사할 권한이 있고, 묶거나 풀 권한이 있는 자가 없는 교회 밖에서는 그 어떤 것도 묶이거나 풀릴 수 없음을 알게 된다.
The water of the Church, faithful and holy, the water of salvation, cannot be defiled and polluted, just as the Church herself is undefiled and chaste and pure.
교회 자체가 부정해지지 않고, 순결하고, 순수한 것처럼, 충성스럽고 거룩한 교회의 물, 곧 구원의 물은 더럽혀지거나 오염될 수 없다.
Since the Three are One, what pleasure could the Holy Spirit take in the enemy of the Father and the Son?
세 분들께서 하나이신데, 어찌 성령께서 성부와 성자의 원수들을 기뻐하시겠는가?
Baptism cannot be common to us and the heretics, for we do not have God the Father in common, nor Christ the Son, nor the Holy Ghost, nor the faith, nor the Church itself. Therefore those who come from heresy to the Church ought to be baptized.
우리와 이단들이 세례를 공유할 수 없다. 왜냐하면 우리는 그들과 성부 하나님, 성자 하나님, 성령 하나님, 믿음, 그리고 교회 자체를 공유하지 않기 때문이다. 그러므로 이단으로부터 우리로 온 자들은 세례 받아야 한다.
