Though they are walking in darkness, they think they are in the light, through the deceitful flattery of the adversary who, as the Apostle said, transforms himself into an angel of light and adorns his ministers as ministers of righteousness, who call night day, death salvation, despair hope, perfidy faith, antichrist Christ, cunningly to frustrate truth by their lying show of truth.
그들은 어둠 속을 걷고 있지만, 적대자의 기만적 감언으로 인해 스스로는 빛 가운데 걷고 있다고 생각한다. 사도 바울에 의하면 이 적대자는 스스로를 광명의 천사로 내세우고, 자신의 사역자들을 의(義)의 사역자들로 보이게 꾸미며, 그의 사역자들은 밤을 낮, 죽음을 구원, 절망을 소망, 배반을 신앙, 적그리스도를 그리스도라 말하여, 간교하게 진리를 거짓되게 보여주어 진리를 방해한다.
Certainly the rest of the apostles were exactly what Peter was; they were endowed with an equal share of office and power. But there was unity at the beginning before any development, to demonstrate that the Church of Christ is one.
분명 그 나머지 사도들도 정확히 베드로와 동일한 사도들이었고, 그들은 동등한 직분과 권한을 부여받았다. 그러나 발전이 진행되기 전 시작 지점에는 하나됨(단일성)이 있었고, 이는 그리스도의 교회가 하나임(단 하나의 존재임)을 말해준다.
The episcopate is a single whole, in which each bishop’s share gives him a right to, and a responsibility for, the whole. So is the Church a single whole, though she spreads far and wide into a multitude of churches as her fertility increases. We may compare the sun, many rays but one light, or a tree, many branches but one firmly rooted trunk.
주교단(감독단)도 하나의 단일체이고, 이 안에서 각 주교는 전체에 대한 권한과 전체를 위한 책임을 진다. 교회도, 증식력이 증대함에 따라 널리, 멀리 퍼져 큰 교회 집단을 이룰지라도, 그와 같이 하나의 단일체이다. 우리는 이를 태양에 비유할 수 있다. 많은 빛들이 있으나 단 하나의 광원이 있을 뿐이다. 또한 나무에 비유할 수 있는데, 많은 가지들이 있으나 굳게 뿌리내린 하나의 몸통줄기만 있을 뿐이다.
If you abandon the Church and join yourself to an adulteress, you are cut off from the promises of the Church.
당신이 교회를 떠나 간부(姦婦)와 하나가 되면 교회에 주어진 약속들에서 배제된다.
You cannot have God for your father unless you have the Church for your mother.
교회를 어머니로 여기지 않는 자는 하나님을 아버지로 모실 수 없다.
“He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.” To break the peace and concord of Christ is to go against Christ. To gather somewhere outside the Church is to scatter Christ’s Church.
“나와 함께 하지 않는 자는 나를 대적하는 자요, 나와 함께 모으지 않는 자는 흩어놓는 자이다. (마12:30)” 그리스도의 평화와 일치를 깨는 것은 그리스도를 대적하는 것이다. 교회 밖 다른 곳에서 모이는 것은 그리스도의 교회를 흩어놓는 것이다.
He who rends and divides the Church cannot possess the garment of Christ.
교회를 찢고 나누는 자는 그리스도로 옷 입을 수 없다 (그리스도의 옷을 소유할 수 없다).
When the twelve tribes of Israel were being rent, the prophet Ahijah rent his garment. But since Christ’s people cannot be rent, his coat, woven throughout as a single whole, was not rent by its owners. Undivided, conjoined, coherent, it proves the unbroken harmony of our people who have put on Christ.
이스라엘의 12 지파가 분리되는 과정에서 선지자 아히야는 자기 옷을 찢었다. 그러나 그리스도의 백성은 갈라질 수 없기에, 그분의 옷은 통으로 짜였고, 그것을 가지려는 자들이 나눌 수 없었다. 그 옷은 나눌 수 없고, 결합되었고, 밀착성이 있기에, >그리스도를 입고 있는 우리 백성들<의 깨질 수 없는 일치(융화)를 증명하고 있다.
“In the house shall it be eaten; ye shall not cast the flesh abroad out of the house.” The flesh of Christ and the holy thing of the Lord cannot be cast out.
“그것(유월절 양)은 집 안에서 먹어야 한다. 너희는 그 고기를 집밖에 두지 마라. (출12:46)” 그리스도의 살과 그분의 거룩한 것을 (교회의) 밖에 두어서는 (버려서는) 안 된다.
Confession does not guarantee immunity from the snares of the devil nor provide lasting security against the temptations, the perils, the attacks and assaults of the world, as long as you are in the world.
우리가 세상에 있는 동안에는 (그리스도에 대한) 신앙고백은 마귀의 올가미에 대한 면역성을 보장하지도 않고 세상이 주는 시험, 위험, 공격과 습격에 대한 영구적 안전도 제공하지 않는다.
Confession is the beginning of glory, it does not earn the crown at once.
신앙고백은 영광의 시작이다. 그것은 즉시 면류관을 획득하지 않는다.
One who is called a confessor of Christ should imitate the Christ whom he confesses.
그리스도를 고백하는 자는 자신이 고백하는 분을 본받아야 한다.
