But that light was already thoroughly quenched out, so that they could find none. This was a rueful state: this was a lamentable form of God's Church. It was a misery to live therein without the Gospel, without light, and without all comfort.
그러나 그 빛은 이미 완전히 꺼져서 사람들이 찾을 수 없게 되었다. 이것은 슬픈 상황이었고, 이것은 하나님의 교회의 한탄스런 상태였다. 복음 없이, 빛 없이, 아무런 위로도 없이 그런 곳에 사는 것은 불행이었다.
We affirm, together with the ancient fathers, that the body of Christ is not eaten but of the good and faithful, and of those that are endued with the Spirit of Christ. Their doctrine is, that Christ's very body effectually, and, as they speak, really and substantially, may not only be eaten of the wicked and unfaithful men, but also (which is monstrous to be spoken) of mice and dogs.

These men, like sounding metal, yell out in the churches unknown and strange words with out understanding, without knowledge, and without devotion; yea, and do it of purpose, because the people should understand nothing at all.
이 자들은 교회에서 이해도, 지식도, 헌신도 없이 알아들을 수 없는 이상한 말로, 울리는 징처럼 소리 지른다. 그리고 사람들이 절대 알아들으면 안 되기에, 목적을 갖고 그 짓을 한다.

Tell us, hath the Pope alone succeeded Peter? and wherein, I pray you? In what religion? in what office? in what piece of his life hath he succeeded him? What one thing (tell me) had Peter ever like unto the Pope, or the Pope like unto Peter? Except peradventure they will say thus; that Peter, when he was at Rome, never taught the gospel, never fed the flock, took away the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, hid the treasures of his Lord, sat him down only in his castle in St. John Lateran, and pointed out with his finger all the places of purgatory and kinds of punishments, committing some poor souls to be tormented, and other some again suddenly releasing thence at his own pleasure, taking money for so doing; or that he gave order to say private masses in every corner; or that he mumbled up the holy service with a low voice, and in an unknown language; or that he hanged up the Sacrament in every temple and on every altar, and carried the same about before him withersoever he went, upon an ambling jennet, with lights and bells; or that he consecrated with his holy breath oil, wax, wool, bells, chalices, churches, and altars; or that he sold jubilees, graces, liberties, advowsons, preventions, first-fruits, palls, the wearing of palls, bulls, indulgences, and pardons; or that he called himself by the name of the head of the church, the highest bishop, bishop of bishops, alone most holy; or that by usurping he took upon himself the right and authority over other folk's churches; or that he exempted himself from the power of any civil government; or that he maintained wars, set princes together at variance; or that he, sitting in his chair, with his triple crown full of labels, with sumptuous and Persian-like gorgeousness, with his royal sceptre, with his diadem of gold, and glittering with stones, was carried about, not upon palfrey, but upon the shoulders of noblemen. These things, no doubt, did Peter at Rome in times past, and left them in charge to his successors, as you would say, from hand to hand; for these things be nowadays done at Rome by the Popes, and be so done, as though nothing else ought to be done.

(말해보시오,) 베드로가 교황을 닮고 교황이 베드로를 닮은 게 단 하나라도 있다면 그게 뭐요? 틀림없이 저들은 이렇게 말할 것이다: >베드로는 로마에 있었을 때 결코 복음을 가르치지 않았고, 양을 먹인 적이 없으며, 천국 열쇠를 치워버렸고, 그의 주님의 보화를 숨겼고, 그분을 오직 라테란 성(聖) 요한 안의 자신의 성(城) 안에만 앉혀 놓고, 그의 손가락으로 연옥의 장소들과 온갖 형벌들을 가리키고, 어떤 가련한 자들은 고문에 넘겨주고, 자기 맘대로 어떤 자들은 갑자기 거기서 다시 풀어주며, 그렇게 하면서 돈을 받아먹었고<, >모든 곳에서 사적(私的) 미사를 드리도록 명했고<, >저음(低音)으로, 못 알아들을 언어로 거룩한 예배를 집전했고<, 혹은 >그는 성체(성만찬 빵)를 모든 교회 모든 제단에 놓고, 그가 가는 곳마다 불들과 종(鐘)들과 함께 그것을 자기 앞에 조랑말에 싣고 다녔고<, >그는 자신의 거룩한 숨(호흡)으로 기름, 왁스, 양털, 종, 성배, 교회, 제단을 성별했고<, >그는 대사(大赦)의 해(희년), 은혜, 자유, 성직록 수여권, 예방(prevention), 첫 열매, 팔리움(영대), 팔리움 착용, 교황의 교서, 면죄부, 교황의 면죄를 팔았고<, >그는 자신을 교회의 머리, 최고위 주교, 주교들의 주교, 홀로 가장 거룩한 자라 했고<, >그는 다른 민족의 교회들을 다스리는 권리와 권위를 강탈하여 취했고<, 혹은 >그는 자신을 모든 세속 정부의 권세에서 벗어나게 했고<, 혹은 >그는 전쟁을 후원하고, 제후들을 이간질했고<, >그는 자기 보좌에 앉은 채, 라벨들로 꽉 찬 자신의 삼(三)중관을 쓰고, 사치스럽게 페리시아인 같이 호사스럽게, 자신의 '왕의 홀'을 들고, 빛나는 보석으로 장식된 금관을 쓰고, 말 위가 아니라 귀족들의 어깨에 얹혀 이동되었다<. 당신 말대로 라면 분명 이러한 일들을 옛날에 베드로가 로마에서 했고, 그의 후계자들에게 그것들을 넘겨주어 계속 이어지게 했다. 왜냐하면 이러한 일들이 오늘날 로마에서 교황들에 의해 행해지고, 마치 그 외 다른 것들은 행해지지 않았음이 분명한 것처럼 이 일들이 행해지고 있기 때문이다.
