>> So, when the people set out from their tents, to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest), the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off; and the peopke passed over opposite Jericho. And while all Israel were passing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan. (Josh 3:14-17) <<
Once upon a time, there was a good king loving his people deeply. The people were blessed, and the population increased. So the king thought he should lead his poeple to a new good land. He was told that there was a good land for them all to live in a little far away. The poeple living there were sinners, so the land was badly defiled. The king decided to drstroy all the inhabitants of the land and settle his people there.
Now the king and his people set out. His servants carried his throne on their shoulders. The king upon the throne went ahead of his people with great majesty. They had to cross a river to reach the land. When the king's procession arrived at the river, the river shuddered at the dignity of the king and forgot to flow, offering him a dry ground way. His servants with his throne on their shoulders standing in the midst of the river, the people walked on the dry ground to the other side of the the river. When all the people crossed the river, the king told his servants bearing his throne to go on to the other side. When he arrived there, the water flowed again. So the peopoe were able to cross the river and conquer the new land.
The Ark of the Covenant, when located in the Most Holy Place, functioned as the throne where God showed himself. (Its upper cover is called Mercy Seat. (Ex 25:17-22)) When the Israelites moved to and fro in the wildernes, the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant on their shoulders went at the head of the procession. This shows that God on the throne went ahead of his people. When this holy King arrived at the Jordan, the river stopped flowing and gave a dry road to them so that they could cross the river.
What a majestic royal procession!
