21 Take care, dear friends, that his many blessings do not turn out to be our condemnation, which will be the case if we fail to live worthily of him, to act in concert, and to do what is good and pleasing to him. For he says somewhere, “The Spirit of the Lord is a lamp which searches the hidden depths of the heart.” Let us realize how near he is, and that none of our thoughts or of the ideas we have escapes his notice. It is right, therefore, that we should not be deserters, disobeying his will. Rather than offend God, let us offend foolish and stupid men who exalt themselves and boast with their pretensions to fine speech. Let us reverence the Lord Jesus Christ whose blood was given for us. Let us respect those who rule over us. Let us honor our elders. Let us rear the young in the fear of God. Let us direct our women to what is good. Let them show a purity of character we can admire. Let them reveal a genuine sense of modesty. By their reticence let them show that their tongues are considerate. Let them not play favorites in showing affection, but in holiness let them love all equally, who fear God. Let our children have a Christian training. Let them learn the value God sets on humility, what power pure love has with him, how good and excellent it is to fear him, and how this means salvation to everybody who lives in his fear with holiness and a pure conscience. For he is the searcher of thoughts and of desires. It is his breath which is in us; and when he wants to, he will take it away.

21장 형제 여러분, 주의하십시오. 그분의 많은 복들은 우리의 정죄로 귀결되지 않습니다. 정죄는 우리가 그분의 거룩에 맞게 살고, 화합 가운데 행하며, 그분 보시기에 선하고 그분을 기쁘시게 하는 것을 행하지 않을 때 임하는 것입니다. 어느 곳엔가 이런 주의 말씀이 있습니다: “주의 성령은 마음속 깊이 숨겨진 것들을 살피는 등불이다.”1) 그분께서 얼마나 가까이 계시는지, 또 그 어떤 우리의 생각과 견해도 그분의 눈을 벗어날 수 없음을 깨달읍시다. 그러므로 우리는 그분의 뜻에 불순종하는 포기자가 되지 맙시다. 하나님을 진노케 말고, 스스로를 높이며 말주변을 자랑하는 어리석고 멍청한 자들을 대적합시다. 우리를 위해 보혈을 흘리신 주 예수 그리스도를 경외합시다. 우리를 다스리는 자들을 존경합시다. 연장자들을 공경합시다. 하나님을 경외하는 태도를 갖고 젊은이들을 키웁시다. 우리가 칭찬할 수 있는 깨끗한 품성을 그들이 보이게 합시다. 그들이 진정한 겸손을 보이게 합시다. 절제된 언행으로 그들의 말이 사려 깊게 합시다. 그들이 편애하지 않고, 거룩한 가운데 >하나님을 경외하는 모든 자들<을 똑같이 사랑하게 합시다. 우리의 자녀들에게 기독교 훈육을 행합시다. 그들로 하여금 >하나님께서 인정하신 겸손의 가치<, >그분께 있는 순수한 사랑이 어떤 능력이 있는지<, >그분을 경외하는 것이 얼마나 선하고 좋은 일인지<, >어찌하여 이것이 하나님을 경외하고 거룩함과 깨끗한 양심으로 사는 자들에게 구원을 의미하는지<를 깨닫게 합시다. 그분께서는 우리의 생각과 바라는 것을 살피시는 분이십니다. 우리 안에 그분의 숨(호흡)이 있고, 그분께서 뜻하신다면 그것을 거두실 수도 있습니다.

22 Now Christian faith confirms all this. For this is how Christ addresses us through his Holy Spirit: “Come, my children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is there that desires life, and loves to see good days? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from uttering deceit. Refrain from evil and do good. Seek peace and follow after it. The eyes of the Lord are over the upright and his ears are open to their petitions. But the face of the Lord is turned against those who do evil, to eradicate their memory from the earth. The upright man cried out and the Lord heeded him and delivered him out of all his troubles. Manifold are the plagues of the sinner, but his mercy will enfold those who hope on the Lord.”

23 The all-merciful and beneficent Father has compassion on those who fear him, and with kindness and love he grants his favors to those who approach him with a sincere heart. For this reason we must not be double-minded, and our souls must not harbor wrong notions about his excellent and glorious gifts. Let that verse of Scripture be remote from us, which says: “Wretched are the double-minded, those who doubt in their soul and say, ‘We have heard these things even in our fathers’ times, and, see, we have grown old and none of them has happened to us.’ You fools! Compare yourselves to a tree. Take a vine: first it sheds its leaves, then comes a bud, then a leaf, then a flower, and after this a sour grape, and finally a ripe bunch.” You note that the fruit of the tree reaches its maturity in a short time. So, to be sure, swiftly and suddenly his purpose will be accomplished, just as Scriptures, too, testifies: “Quickly he will come and not delay, and the Lord will come suddenly into his temple, even the Holy One whom you expect.”

24 Let us consider, dear friends, how the Master continually points out to us that there will be a future resurrection. Of this he made the Lord Jesus Christ the first fruits by raising him from the dead. Let us take note, dear friends, of the resurrection at the natural seasons. Day and night demonstrate resurrection. Night passes and day comes. Day departs and night returns. Take the crops as examples. How and in what way is the seeding done? The sower goes out and casts each of his seeds in the ground. When they fall on the ground they are dry and bare, and they decay. But then the marvelous providence of the Master resurrects them from their decay, and from a single seed many grow and bear fruit.

24장 형제 여러분, 주께서 우리에게 장래 있을 부활에 대한 말씀을 얼마나 지속적으로 하셨는지 생각해봅시다. 하나님께서는 주 예수 그리스도를 죽음에서 살리심으로 부활의 첫 열매가 되게 하셨습니다. 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 자연의 시기들에 있는 부활을 봅시다. 낮과 밤은 부활을 실행하고 있습니다. 밤이 지나면 낮이 옵니다. 낮이 물러나면 밤이 되돌아옵니다. 작물들을 봅시다. 어떻게 그리고 어떤 방식으로 씨뿌리기가 되나요? 농부가 밭으로 나가 씨를 뿌립니다. 씨가 땅에 뿌려졌을 때 그것은 메마르고 초라합니다. 그런데 그 씨가 썩습니다. 그러나 하나님의 놀라운 섭리가 그 씨를 썩음에서 부활시키고, 씨 하나에서 많은 것들이 자라나고 열매를 맺습니다.

 

25 Let us note the remarkable token which comes from the East, from the neighborhood, that is, of Arabia. There is a bird which is called a phoenix. It is the only one of its kind and lives five hundred years. When the time for its departure and death draws near, it makes a burial nest for itself from frankincense, myrrh, and other spices; and when the time is up, it gets into it and dies. From its decaying flesh a worm is produced, which is nourished by the secretions of the dead creature and grows wings. When it is full–fledged, it takes up the burial nest containing the bones of its predecessor, and manages to carry them all the way from Arabia to the Egyptian city called Heliopolis. And in broad daylight, so that everyone can see, it lights at the altar of the sun and puts them down there, and so starts home again. The priests then look up their dated records and discover it has come after a lapse of five hundred years.

26 Shall we, then, imagine that it is something great and surprising if the Creator of the universe raises up those who have served him in holiness and in the assurance born of a good faith, when he uses a mere bird to illustrate the greatness of his promise? For he says somewhere: “And you shall raise me up and I shall give you thanks”; and, “I lay down and slept: I rose up because you are with me.” And again Job says, “And you will make this flesh of mine, which has endured all this, to rise up.”

26장 우주의 창조주 하나님께서 한갓 새를 그분의 약속의 위대함을 예증하시는데 사용하심에도, 우리가 그분께서 >거룩함과 ‘선한 믿음에서 나온 확신’ 가운데 그분을 섬겨온 자들<을 부활시키시는 일이 크고 놀라운 것이라 할 수 있습니까? 주께서 어느 곳엔가 이렇게 말씀하십니다: “주께서 나를 일으키시고 나는 주께 감사드릴 것입니다”1); “나는 누워 잤고, 주께서 나와 함께 하시니 나는 일어났습니다.”2) 욥은 이렇게 말합니다: “주께서는 이 모든 것을 인내한 나의 이 육신을 일으키실 것입니다.”3)

27 With this hope, then, let us attach ourselves to him who is faithful to his promises and just in his judgments. He who bids us to refrain from lying is all the less likely to lie himself. For nothing is impossible to God save laying. Let us, then, rekindle our faith in him, and bear in mind that nothing is beyond his reach. By his majestic word he established the universe, and by his word he can bring it to an end. “Who shall say to him, What have you done? or who shall resist his mighty strength?” He will do everything when he wants to and as he wants to. And not one of the things he has decreed will fail. Everything is open to his sight and nothing escapes his will. For “the heavens declare God’s glory and the sky proclaims the work of his hands. Day pours forth words to day; and night imparts knowledge to night. And there are neither words nor speech, and their voices are not heard.”

28 Since, then, he sees and hears everything, we should fear him and rid ourselves of wicked desires that issue in base deeds. By so doing we shall be sheltered by his mercy from the judgments to come. For where can any of us flee to escape his mighty hand? What world is there to receive anyone who deserts him? For Scripture says somewhere: “Where shall I go and where shall I hide from your presence? If I go up to heaven, you are there. If I go off to the ends of the earth, there is your right hand. If I make my bed in the depths, there is your spirit.” Where, then, can anyone go or where can he flee to escape from him who embraces everything?

29 We must, then, approach him with our souls holy, lifting up pure and undefiled hands to him, loving our kind and compassionate Father, who has made us his chosen portion. For thus it is written: “When the Most High divided the nations, when he dispersed the sons of Adam, he fixed the boundaries of the nations to suit the number of God’s angels. The Lord’s portion became his people, Jacob: Israel was the lot that fell to him.” And in another place it says: “Behold, the Lord takes for himself a people from among the nations, just as a man takes the first fruits of his threshing floor; and the Holy of Holies shall come forth from that nation.”

30 Since, then, we are a holy portion, we should do everything that makes for holiness. We should flee from slandering, vile and impure embraces, drunkenness, rioting, filthy lusts, detestable adultery, and disgusting arrogance. “For God,” says Scripture, “resists the arrogant, but gives grace to the humble.” We should attach ourselves to those to whom God’s grace has been given. We should clothe ourselves with concord, being humble, self-controlled, far removed from all gossiping and slandering, and justified by our deeds, not by words. For it says: “He who talks a lot will hear much in reply. Or does the prattler imagine he is right? Blessed is the one his mother bore to be short-lived. Do not indulge in talking overmuch.” We should leave God to praise us and not praise ourselves. For God detests self-praisers. Let others applaud our good deeds, as it was with our righteous forefathers. Presumption, audacity, and recklessness are traits of those accursed by God. But considerateness, humility, and modesty are the traits of those whom God has blessed.

31 Let us, then, cling to his blessing and note what leads to it. Let us unfold the tale of the ancient past. Why was our father Abraham blessed? Was it not because he acted in righteousness and truth, prompted by faith? Isaac, fully realizing what was going to happen, gladly let himself be led to sacrifice. In humility Jacob quit his homeland because of his brother. He went to Laban and became his slave, and to him there were given the twelve scepters of the tribes of Israel. 32 And if anyone will candidly look into each example, he will realize the magnificence of the gifts God gives.

For from Jacob there came all the priests and the Levites who serve at God’s altar. From him comes the Lord Jesus so far as his human nature goes. From him there come the kings and rulers and governors of Judah. Nor is the glory of the other tribes derived from him insignificant. For God promised that “your seed shall be as the stars of heaven.” So all of them received honor and greatness, not through themselves or their own deeds or the right things they did, but through his will. And we, therefore, who by his will have been called in Jesus Christ, are not justified of ourselves or by our wisdom or insight or religious devotion or the holy deeds we have done from the heart, but by that faith by which almighty God has justified all men from the very beginning. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

야곱으로부터 하나님의 제단을 섬기는 모든 제사장들과 레위인들이 나옵니다. 육신으로는 주 예수께서 야곱의 자손이십니다. 그로부터 유다의 왕들, 지배자들, 방백들이 나옵니다. 그로부터 나온 다른 지파들의 영광도 무시할 수 없습니다. 하나님께서는 “네 자손이 하늘의 별과 같이 많을 것이다”1) 약속하셨습니다. 그리하여 그들 모두가 영광과 위대함을 얻게 되었는데, 이는 그들 자신들이나, 그들의 행위나, 그들이 행한 옳은 일들로 말미암지 않고, 하나님의 뜻에 의한 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님의 뜻으로 예수 그리스도 안에서 부름받은 우리는 우리 자신, 우리의 지혜, 우리의 통찰력, 종교적 헌신, 마음으로부터 행한 우리의 거룩한 행위들로 인해 의롭다 인정받지 않고, 전능하신 하나님께서 처음부터 모든 자들을 의롭게 여기시는 계기가 되는 바로 이 믿음으로 인해 의롭다 인정받습니다. 그분께 영광이 영원 영원토록 있기를 바라옵니다. 아멘.

33 What, then, brothers, ought we to do? Should we grow slack in doing good and give up love? May the Lord never permit this to happen at any rate to us! Rather should we be energetic in doing “every good deed” with earnestness and eagerness. For the Creator and Master of the universe himself rejoices in his works. Thus by his almighty power he established the heavens and by his inscrutable wisdom he arranged them. He separated the land from the water surrounding it and fixed it upon the sure foundation of his own will. By his decree he brought into existence the living creatures which roam on it; and after creating the sea and the creatures which inhabit it, he fixed its boundaries by his power. Above all, with his holy and pure hands he formed man, his outstanding and greatest achievement, stamped with his own image. For this is what God said: “Let us make man in our own image and likeness. And God made man: male and female he created.” And so, when he had finished all this, he praised it and blessed it and said, “Increase and multiply.” We should observe that all the righteous have been adorned with good deeds and the very Lord adorns himself with good deeds and rejoices. Since, then, we have this example, we should unhesitatingly give ourselves to his will, and put all our effort into acting uprightly.

34 The good laborer accepts the bread he has earned with his head held high; the lazy and negligent workman cannot look his employer in the face. We must, then, be eager to do good; for everything comes from Him. For he warns us: “See, the Lord is coming. He is bringing his reward with him, to pay each one according to his work.” He bids us, therefore, to believe on him with all our heart, and not to be slack or negligent in “every good deed.” He should be the basis of our boasting and assurance. We should be subject to his will. We should note how the whole throng of his angels stand ready to serve his will. For Scripture says: “Ten thousand times hen thousand stood by him, and thousands of thousands ministered to him and cried out: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts: all creation is full of his glory.” We too, then, should gather together for worship in concord and mutual trust, and earnestly beseech him as it were with one mouth, that we may share in his great and glorious promises. For he says, “Eye has not seen and ear has not heard and man’s heart has not conceived what he has prepared for those who patiently wait for him.”

35 How blessed and amazing are God’s gifts, dear friends! Life with immortality, splendor with righteousness, truth with confidence, faith with assurance, self-control with holiness! And all these things are within our comprehension. What, then, is being prepared for those who wait for him? The Creator and Father of eternity, the all-holly, himself knows how great and wonderful it is. We, then, should make every effort to be found in the number of those who are patiently looking for him, so that we may share in the gifts he has promised. And how shall this be, dear friends? If our mind is faithfully fixed on God; if we seek out what pleases and delights him; if we do what is in accord with his pure will, and follow in the way of truth. If we rid ourselves of all wickedness, evil, avarice, contentiousness, malice, fraud, gossip, slander, hatred of God, arrogance, pretension, conceit, and inhospitality. God hates those who act in this way; “and not only those who do these things but those who applaud them.” For Scripture says: “But God told the sinner: Why do you speak of my statutes and have my covenant on your lips? You hated discipline and turned your back on my words. If you saw a thief you went along with him, and you threw in your lot with adulterers. Your mouth overflowed with iniquity, and your tongue wove deceit. You sat there slandering your brother and putting a stumbling block in the way of your mother’s son. This you did, and I kept silent. You suspected, you wicked man, that I would be like you. I will reproach you and show you your very self. Ponder, then, these things, you who forget God, lest he seize you like a lion and there be no one to save you. A sacrifice of praise will glorify me, and that is the way by which I will show him God’s salvation.”

35장 형제 여러분, 하나님의 선물이 얼마나 복되고 놀라운지요! 불멸의 생명, 의로움 있는 화려, 신뢰 있는 진리, 확신 있는 믿음, 거룩한 절제! 그리고 이 모든 것들이 우리의 이해력 안에 있습니다. 그러면 그분을 기다리는 자들에게 무엇이 준비되어 있습니까? 영원하신 창조자 하나님, 지극히 거룩하신 그분께서 그것이 얼마나 위대하고 놀라운 것인지 아십니다. 그러니 우리는 모든 노력을 기울여 >인내하며 그분을 찾는 무리<에 들어 그분께서 약속하신 선물들을 함께 나누어야 합니다. 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 어찌해야 그렇게 되지요? 우리의 마음이 충실히 그분께 향하고, 그분께서 기뻐하시고 즐거워하시는 게 뭔지 알아내고, 오직 그분의 뜻에 일치하는 것을 행하고 진리 가운데 그것을 따를 때 그게 가능합니다. 우리가 모든 부정, 악, 탐욕, 분쟁, 악의, 사기, 험담, 중상, 하나님을 미워함, 교만, 겉치레, 자만, 불친절을 멀리할 때 가능합니다.1) 하나님께서는 이같이 행하는 자들을 미워하십니다: “이런 일들을 행하는 자들뿐만 아니라 그들을 칭찬하는 자들.”2) (오늘날에는 사악한 동성애 정신병자들뿐만 아니라 퇴폐 윤리학으로 그들을 정당화하는 자들. 이 두 부류는 반드시 다 지옥에 갑니다. 특히 동성애 두둔하는 신학자, 목사들 반드시 다 지옥에 갑니다.) 성경은 말합니다: “그러나 하나님께서 죄인에게 말씀하신다: ‘왜 네가 내 법을 말하고 내 계약을 말하느냐? 너는 내 훈계를 싫어하고 내 말에 등을 돌렸다. 도둑을 보면 너는 그와 어울리고, 간음하는 자들과 동무가 된다. 네 입은 불의가 넘쳐흐르고, 네 혀는 속임수를 지어낸다. 너는 앉았다 하면 형제들 험담을 하고, 네 친형제들의 가는 길에 거치는 돌을 놓았다. 네가 이 짓을 해도 내가 잠자코 있었더니, 너 악인은 내가 너와 같을 거라 생각하는도다. 나는 너를 꾸짖을 것이고, 네 자신이 누군지 깨닫게 할 것이다. 그러니 하나님을 잊은 자는 이것을 생각하여 하나님께서 너를 사자처럼 잡아 물어 너를 구할 자가 없는 일이 안 생기게 하라. 찬양의 제사는 나를 영화롭게 하고, 이것이 바로 내가 그에게 하나님의 구원을 보이는 방식이다.”2)

36 This is the way, dear friends, in which we found our salvation, Jesus Christ, the high priest of our offerings, the protector and helper of our weakness. Through him we fix our gaze on the heights of heaven. In him we see mirrored God’s pure and transcendent face. Through him the eyes of our hearts have been opened. Through him our foolish and darkened understanding springs up to the light. Through him the Master has willed that we should taste immortal knowledge. For, “since he reflects God’s splendor, he is as superior to the angels as his title is more distinguished than theirs.” For thus it is written: “He who makes his angels winds, and his ministers flames of fire.” But of his son this is what the Master said: “You are my son: today I have begotten you. Ask me and I will give you the nations for you to inherit, and the ends of the earth for you to keep.” And again he says to him: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” Who are meant by “enemies”? Those who are wicked and resist his will.

36장 형제 여러분, 이것이 우리가 우리의 구원, 곧 우리의 제물을 다루시는 대제사장이시고 우리의 약함을 도우시는 보호자 예수 그리스도를 발견하는 방법입니다. 그분으로 인하여 우리는 하늘 높은 곳을 바라볼 수 있습니다. 우리는 그분에게서 반사된 하나님의 순수한 초월적 얼굴을 봅니다. 그분을 통하여 우리의 마음의 문이 열렸습니다. 그분을 통하여 우리의 어리석고 어두운 지성이 빛 가운데로 솟아났습니다. 그분을 통하여 하나님께서는 우리로 하여금 불멸의 지식을 맛보게 하셨습니다. “그는 하나님의 광채를 반사하는 분이시고, 그의 직분이 천사들보다 뛰어나신 것같이 그는 그들보다 뛰어나시다.”1) 이런 말씀이 있습니다: “자신의 천사들을 바람 삼으시고, 자신의 종들을 불꽃 삼으시는 분.”2) 그러나 자신의 아들에 대하여 하나님께서는 이 말씀을 하십니다: “너는 내 아들이다. 오늘 내가 너를 낳았다. 내게 구하라. 내가 나라들을 네게 유산으로 줄 것이고, 땅끝까지 네 소유로 줄 것이다.”3) 또한 그분께서 그 아들에게 말씀하십니다: “내가 네 원수들을 네 발판으로 만들어 놓을 때까지 너는 내 오른편에 앉아라.”4) “원수들”이 누군가요? 사악하고 하나님의 뜻에 거스르는 자들입니다.

37 Really in earnest, then, brothers, we must march under his irreproachable orders. Let us note with what discipline, readiness, and obedience those who serve under our generals carry out orders. Not everybody is a general, colonel, captain, sergeant, and so on. But “each in his own rank” carries out the orders of the emperor and of the genearls. The great cannot exist without the small; neither can the small exist without the great. All are linked together; and this has an advantage. Take our body, for instance. The head cannot get along without the feet. Nor, similarly, can the feet get along without the head. “The tiniest parts of our body are essential to it,” and are valuable to the total body. Yes, they all act in concord, and are united in a single obedience to preserve the whole body.

37장 그러하니 형제 여러분, 우리는 진심으로 그분의 완벽한 명령에 따라 전진해 나가야 합니다. 우리는 어떤 기강, 준비, 순종으로 우리의 장군들 아래 있는 자들이 명령들을 수행했는지 주목해야 합니다. 각 사람이 동시에 장군이나 기타 여러 계급들을 다 가지지 않습니다. 하지만 “각자는 자신의 계급으로” 황제나 장군들의 명령을 수행합니다. 큰 자는 작은 자 없이 존재할 수 없고, 작은 자도 큰 자 없이 존재할 수 없습니다. 모두는 서로 결합되어 있고, 그게 이점이 있습니다. 일례로 우리의 몸을 생각해 보십시오. 머리는 발 없이 지낼 수 없습니다. 마찬가지로 발도 머리 없이 지낼 수 없습니다. “우리 몸의 가장 작은 부분들이 없어서는 안 될 것들이고,”1) 몸 전체에 귀중합니다. 그렇습니다. 그 모든 부분들은 일치를 이루어 행하고, 몸 전체를 보존하기 위해 한 뜻으로 순종하여 연합되어 있습니다.

38 Following this out, we must preserve our Christian body too in its entirety. Each must be subject to his neighbor, according to his special gifts. The strong must take care of the weak; the weak must look up to the strong. The rich must provide for the poor; the poor must thank God for giving him someone to meet his needs. The wise man must show his wisdom not in words but in good deeds. The humble must not brag about his humility; but should give others occasion to mention it. He who is continent must not put on airs. He must recognize that his self-control is a gift from another. We must take to heart, brothers, from what stuff we were created, what kind of creatures we were when we entered the world, from what a dark grave he who fashioned and created us brought us into his world. And we must realize the preparations he so generously made before we were born. Since, then, we owe all this to him, we ought to give him unbounded thanks. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

38장 이것을 끝까지 해내서 우리는 우리의 기독교 몸 또한 온전히 보존해야 합니다. 우리는 각자의 특별한 은사에 맞게 각자의 이웃을 섬겨야(복종해야) 합니다. 강한 자는 약한 자를 돌봐야 하고, 약한 자는 강한 자를 존경해야 합니다. 부자는 가난한 자의 필요를 채워줘야 하고, 가난한 자는 자기를 도와주는 자를 보내주신 하나님께 감사해야 합니다. 지혜로운 자는 말이 아니라 선한 행위로 자신의 지혜를 드러내야 합니다. 겸손한 자는 자신의 겸손을 자랑하면 안 되고, 타인이 그것을 말하게 해야 합니다. 금욕하는 자는 으스대면 안 됩니다. 그는 자신의 자제심이 다른 분에게 받은 은사임을 알아야 합니다. 형제 여러분, 우리는 우리가 무엇으로 만들어졌는지, 우리가 세상에 생겨날 때 어떤 종류의 피조물이었는지, 우리를 만들어 창조하신 분께서 어떤 어두운 무덤으로부터 불러내 우리를 그분의 세상에 있게 하셨는지를 생각해 봐야 합니다. 그리고 우리는 그분께서 우리가 태어나기 전에 그토록 후하게 준비하신 것들을 깨달아 알아야 합니다. 그러하니, 이 모든 것이 그분 덕분이므로 우리는 그분께 무한한 감사를 드려야 합니다. 그분께 영광이 무한 무한히 있기를 원하옵니다. 아멘.

 

39 Thoughtless, silly, senseless, and ignorant folk mock and jeer at us, in an effort, so they imagine, to exalt themselves. But what can a mere mortal do? What power has a creature of earth? For it is written: “There was no shape before my eyes, but I heard a breath and a voice. What! Can a mortal be pure before the Lord? Or can a man be blameless for his actions, if he does not believe in His servants and finds something wrong with His angels? Not even heaven is pure in His sight: let alone those who live in houses of clay ㅡ of the very same clay of which we ourselves are made. He smites them like a moth; and they do not last from dawn to dusk. They perish, for they cannot help themselves. He breathes on them, and they die for lack of wisdom. Call out and see if anyone will heed you, or if you will see any of the holy angels. For wrath destroys a stupid man, and rivalry is the death of one in error. I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly their home is swept away. May their sons be far from safety! May they be mocked at the doors of lesser men, and there will be none to deliver them. For what has been prepared by them, the righteous will eat; and they shall not be delivered from troubles.”

39장 경솔하고, 어리석고, 지각없고, 무지한 자들이 제딴에는 스스로를 높이는 가운데 우리를 조롱하고 비웃습니다. 그러나 필멸적(必滅的) 인간이 무엇을 할 수 있겠습니까? 이 땅의 피조물이 무슨 힘이 있습니까? 이런 말씀이 있습니다: “내 눈 앞에 아무 형태도 업었고, 나는 어떤 숨소리와 어떤 음성을 들었다. 이런! 인간이 주 앞에 깨끗할 수 있는가? 그분께서 자신의 종들조차 믿지 않으시고 자신의 천사들에게서도 잘못을 발견하시는데, 인간이 자신의 행위에 흠 없을 수 있겠는가? 하늘조차 그분의 눈에는 정하지 않은데, 흙으로 만든, 우리를 창조하실 때 재료로 쓰신 그 흙으로 만든 집에 살고 있는 자들이야 말해 뭣하겠는가? 그분께서는 좀벌레처럼 그들을 상하게 하시고, 그들은 새벽에서 시작해서 저녁 시간에도 이르지 못하고 없어진다. 그들은 사멸한다. 스스로를 도울 수 없기 때문이다. 그분께서 그들에게 입김을 내어 흐려지게 하시니, 그들은 지혜가 부족해 죽는다. 소리내어 외쳐보라. 그리고 누가 네 말을 듣는지 혹은 거룩한 천사 하나라도 네가 보게 되는지 봐라. 분노는 어리석은 자를 파괴하고, 경쟁은 잘못한 자의 죽음이다. 나는 어리석은 자들이 뿌리를 내리는 것을 보았으나 갑자기 그들의 집이 휩쓸려 갔다. 그들의 자손이 불안 가운데 살기를! 그들이 자신들보다 낮은 자들의 문에서 조롱당하고 그들을 구해줄 자가 없기를! 그들이 준비해 놓은 것을 의인들이 먹을 것이고, 그들은 곤경에서 벗어나지 못할 것이다.”1)

40 Now that this is clear to us and we have peered into the depths of the divine knowledge, we are bound to do in an orderly fashion all that the Master has bidden us to do at the proper times he set. He ordered sacrifices and services to be performed; and required this to be done, not in a careless and disorderly way, but at the times and seasons he fixed. Where he wants them performed, and by whom, he himself fixed by his supreme will, so that everything should be done in a holy way and with his approval, and should be acceptable to his will. Those, therefore, who make their offerings at the time set, win his approval and blessing. For they follow the Master’s orders and do no wrong. The high priest is given his particular duties: the priests are assigned their special place, while on the Levites particular tasks are imposed. The layman is bound by the layman’s code.

40장 이것이 우리에게 분명하고, 우리가 하나님 지식의 심연을 들여다 본 이상, 우리는 주께서 우리에게 그분께서 정하신 적당한 시기에 하도록 명하신 모든 것을 규율에 따라 행해야만 합니다. 그분께서는 제사와 섬김의 직무를 행하라 명하시고, 이것이 부주의와 무질서 가운데가 아니라 그분께서 정하신 시간과 때에 하라 요구하십니다. 그분께서 그것들이 행해지기를 원하는 장소와 누가 그것을 행하는지는 그분의 지고(至高)의 뜻으로 그분 자신이 정하시어, 모든 것이 거룩한 방식으로, 그분의 인정을 받아, 그분의 뜻에 합당하게 행해지도록 하셨습니다. 그러므로 정해진 시기에 제물을 드리는 자들은 그분의 인정과 축복을 받습니다. 그들이 주의 명령을 따르고 아무런 그릇됨이 없기 때문입니다. 대제사장에게는 특별 직무가 있습니다: 제사장들에게 특별 자리를 부여하고, 레위인들에게는 특별 임무를 줌. 평신도는 평신도 규약을 따릅니다.
