The church of God, living in exile in Rome, to the church of God, exiled in Corinth ㅡ to you who are called and sanctified by God’s will through our Lord Jesus Christ. Abundant grace and peace be yours from God Almighty through Jesus Christ.

로마에 망명 중인 하나님의 교회가 고린도에 망명 중인 하나님의 교회와 주 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님의 뜻에 따라 부름받고 거룩하게 된 성도 여러분에게 서신을 보냅니다. 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 전능하신 하나님의 큰 은혜와 평화가 여러분에게 있기를 빕니다.

 

1 Due, dear friends, to the sudden and successive misfortunes and accidents we have encountered, we have, we admit, been rather long in turning our attention to your quarrels. We refer to the abominable and unholy schism, so alien and foreign to those who God has chosen, which a few impetuous and headstrong fellows have fanned to such a pitch of insanity that your good name, once so famous and dear to us all, has fallen into the gravest ill repute. Has anyone, indeed, stayed with you without attesting the excellence and firmness of your faith? Without admiring your sensible and considerate Christian piety? without broadcasting your spirit of unbounded hospitality? without praising your perfect and trustworthy knowledge? For you always acted without partiality and walked in God’s laws. You obeyed your rulers and gave your elders the proper respect. You disciplined the minds of your young people in moderation and dignity. You instructed your women to do everything with a blameless and pure conscience, and to give their husbands the affection they should. You taught them, too, to abide by the rule of obedience and to run their homes with dignity and thorough discretion.

1장. 형제 여러분, 우리에게 알려진 갑작스럽고 연속된 불행들과 사건들로 인하여, 우리는 오랜 기간 여러분의 분쟁을 관심 있게 지켜보고 있었습니다. 그 가증하고 불경스런 분쟁 말입니다. 그것은 하나님의 선민에게 너무 이질적이고 낯선 것입니다. 몇몇 충동적이고 완고한 자들이 너무 광적으로 그 분쟁을 선동하여 한때는 우리 모두에게 유명하고 소중했던 여러분의 명성이 가장 큰 치욕이 되게 했습니다. 여러분에게 머물렀던 자들 중 그 누가 여러분의 믿음의 우수함과 견고함을 인정하지 않았나요? 여러분의 지각 있고 사려 깊은 기독교인의 경건을 칭찬하지 않았나요? 여러분의 무한한 환대의 마음을 소문내지 않았나요? 여러분의 완전하고도 신뢰할 만한 지식을 칭찬하지 않았나요? 여러분은 항상 공정하게 행했고 하나님의 법에서 벗어나지 않았습니다. 여러분은 여러분의 지도자들에게 복종했고 연장자(장로)들에게 마땅한 존경심을 보였습니다. 여러분은 온유와 존엄으로 젊은이들을 훈계했습니다. 여러분은 여성들에게 모든 일에 있어 흠잡을 데 없는 깨끗한 양심으로 행하고 마땅히 남편을 사랑해야 한다고 가르쳤습니다. 또한 여러분은 그들에게 순종의 규칙을 준수하고 품위 있고 매우 현명하게 집안을 이끌어야 함을 가르쳤습니다.

 

2 You were all humble and without any pretensions, obeying orders rather than issuing them, more gladly giving than receiving. Content with Christ’s rations and mindful of them, you stored his words carefully up in your hearts and held his sufferings before your eyes.

2장 여러분 모두는 겸손하고 매우 수수하여 명령을 내리기보다는 명령에 순종하고, 받기보다는 주는 데에서 더 기쁨을 얻었습니다. 그리스도께서 주시는 양식(말씀의 양식)에 만족해 하고 그것을 묵상하여 여러분은 그분의 말씀을 소중히 마음에 새기고 그분의 고난을 바라보았습니다.

 

In consequence, you were all granted a profound and rich peace and an insatiable longing to do good, while the Holy Spirit was abundantly poured out on you all. You were full of holy counsels, and, with zeal for the good and devout confidence, you stretched out your hands to almighty God, beseeching him to have mercy should you involuntarily have fallen into any sin. Day and night you labored for the whole brotherhood, that by your pity and sympathy the sum of his elect might be saved. You were sincere and guileless and bore no grudges. All sedition and schism were an abomination to you. You wept for the faults of your neighbors, while you reckoned their shortcomings as your own. You never regretted all the good you did, being “ready for any good deed.” Possessed of an excellent and devout character, you did everything in His fear. The commands and decrees of the Lord were engraven on the tables of your heart. 3 You were granted great popularity and growing numbers, so that the word of Scripture was fulfilled: “My beloved ate and drank and filled out and grew fat and started to kick.”

From this there arose rivalry and envy, strife and sedition, persecution and anarchy, war and captivity. And so “the dishonored” rose up “against those who were held in honor,” those of no reputation against the notable, the stupid against the wise, “the young against their elders.” For this reason righteousness and peace are far from you, since each has abandoned the fear of God and grown purblind in his faith, and ceased to walk by the rules of his precepts or to behave in a way worthy of Christ. Rather does each follow the lusts of his evil heart, by reviving that wicked and unholy rivalry, by which, indeed, “death came into the world.”

이것으로부터 경쟁(적대행위)과 질투, 다툼과 폭동선동, 핍박과 무질서, 전쟁과 포로가 있게 됩니다. 그리하여 “불명예스런 자들”이 “명예로운 자들에 대항하여”, 명성 없는 자들이 고귀한 자들을 대항하여, 어리석은 자들이 현명한 자들에 대항하여, “젊은이들이 연장자들을 대항하여” 폭동을 일으킵니다. 그리하여 여러분들이 의와 평화로부터 멀리 벗어났습니다. 각자가 하나님께 대한 경외심을 버리고 믿음에 있어 반(半)소경이 되어, 그분의 말씀의 법에 따라 걷고 그리스도의 합당한 길에서 행하기를 그쳤기 때문입니다. 오히려 각 사람은 자신의 악한 마음의 욕망을 따라가서 저 악하고 불경한 경쟁을 되살려, 그로 인해 “사망이 세상에 들어왔습니다.”1)

4 For Scripture runs thus: “And it happened after some days that Cain brought God a sacrifice from the fruits of the earth, while Abel made his offering from the first-born of the sheep and of their fat. And God looked with favor on Abel and on his gifts; but he did not heed Cain and his sacrifices. And Cain was greatly upset and his face fell. And God said to Cain, ‘Why are you so upset, and why has your face fallen? If you have made a correct offering but not divided it correctly, have you not sinned? Keep quiet. Your brother will turn to you and you shall rule over him.’ And Cain said to his brother Abel, ‘Let us go into the field.’ And it happened that while they were in the field Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.”

You see, brothers, rivalry and envy are responsible for fratricide. Because of rivalry our forefather Jacob fled from the presence of his brother Esau. It was rivalry that caused Joseph to be murderously persecuted and reduced to slavery. Rivalry forced Moses to flee from the presence of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, when he heard his fellow clansman say: “Who made you a ruler or judge over us? Do you want to slay me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?” By reason of rivalry Aaron and Miriam were excluded from the camp. Rivalry cast Dathan and Abiram alive into Hades because they revolted against Moses, God’s servant. Because of rivalry David not only incurred the envy of foreigners but was even persecuted by Saul, the king of Israel.

형제 여러분, 여러분께서 아시다시피 경쟁과 질투가 형제살인의 원인입니다. 경쟁 때문에 우리 조상 야곱이 그의 형 에서에게서 떠났습니다. 요셉이 살인적 핍박을 받고 노예가 되게 한 게 바로 경쟁이었습니다. 모세가 그의 동족이 “누가 너를 우리의 지배자와 재판관으로 삼았느냐? 네가 어제 애굽인을 죽인 것처럼 나도 죽일 셈이냐”라고 하는 말을 들었을 때 애굽왕 바로에게서 도망치게 만든 것이 바로 경쟁입니다. 경쟁 때문에 아론과 미리암이 무리에서 추방되었습니다. 경쟁이 다단과 아비람을 산 채로 하데스(죽음의 세계)에 던졌습니다. 그들이 하나님의 종 모세를 대적했기 때문입니다. 경쟁 때문에 다윗은 이방인들의 질투를 불러일으켰을 뿐만 아니라 이스라엘 왕 사울에게 핍박 받기도 했습니다.

 

5 But, passing from examples in antiquity, let us come to the heroes nearest our own times. Let us take the noble examples of our own generation. By reason of rivalry and envy the greatest and most righteous pillars [of the Church] were persecuted, and battled to the death. Let us set before our eyes the noble apostles: Peter, who by reason of wicked jealousy, not only once or twice but frequently endured suffering and thus, bearing his witness, went to the glorious place which he merited. By reason of rivalry and contention Paul showed how to win the prize for patient endurance. Seven times he was in chains; he was exiled, stoned, became a herald [of the gospel] in East and West, and won the noble renown which his faith merited. To the whole world he taught righteousness, and reaching the limits of the West he bore his witness before rulers. And so, released from this world, he was taken up into the holy place and became the greatest example of patient endurance.

5장 옛 예들은 그만 들고, 우리 시대에 가장 가까운 영웅들을 생각해봅시다. 우리 시대의 숭고한 예들을 들어보겠습니다. 경쟁(적대행위)과 질투로 인해 가장 위대하고 가장 의로운 [교회의] 기둥들이 핍박을 인내해야 했고 죽음에 이르도록 투쟁했습니다. 고귀한 사도들을 생각해봅시다: 베드로, 이 사도는 악한 질투로 인해 한두 번이 아닌 빈번히 고통을 참았고, 그분의 증인이 되어 영광스런 자리에 갔습니다. 이 자리는 그의 믿음이 얻은 겁니다. 경쟁과 논쟁으로 인해 바울이 어떻게 고된 인내의 상을 받는지 우리에게 보여주었습니다. 일곱 번 그는 사슬에 묶였고, 추방되고, 돌에 맞고, 동방과 서방에서 [복음의] 전달자가 되었고, 그리하여 고귀한 명성을 얻었습니다. 이 명성은 그의 믿음이 얻은 것입니다. 그는 온 세상에 의(義)를 가르쳤고, 서쪽 끝에 이르러 통치자들에게 자신의 신앙에 대한 증언을 했습니다. 그리하여 이 세상에서 풀려나(이 세상을 떠나) 그는 거룩한 곳으로 들려 올라갔고, 끈기 있는 인내의 위대한 모범이 되었습니다.

 

6 To these men who lived such holy lives there was joined a great multitude of the elect who by reason of rivalry were the victims of many outrages and tortures and who became outstanding examples among us. By reason of rivalry women were persecuted in the roles of Danaids and Dircae. Victims of dreadful and blasphemous outrages, they ran with sureness the course of faith to the finish, and despite their physical weakness won a notable prize. It was rivalry that estranged wives from their husbands and annulled the saying of our father Adam, “This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.” Rivalry and contention have overthrown great cities and uprooted mighty nations.

6장 이처럼 거룩한 삶을 산 이들에 합류하는 수 많은 선민들이 있는데, 바로 경쟁(적대행위)으로 인한 많은 폭력과 고문의 희생자들이고 우리 가운데 뛰어난 모범이 된 자들입니다. 적대행위로 여성들은 >다나이드와 디르카<가 되어 핍박을 당했습니다. 그들은 가공할 불경스런 폭력의 희생자들이 되어 마지막까지 확신을 가지고 신앙의 길을 갔고, 나약한 육신을 가지고도 고귀한 상을 받았습니다. 아내를 남편으로부터 이간하고 우리의 조상 아담의 이 말을 무력화하는 게 바로 경쟁이었습니다: “이는 내 뼈 중의 뼈요, 내 살 중의 살이로다.”1) 경쟁과 다툼이 위대한 도시들을 무너뜨리고 강대한 나라들을 멸망시켰습니다.

7 We are writing in this vein, dear friends, not only to admonish you but also to remind ourselves. For we are in the same arena and involved in the same struggle. Hence we should give up empty and futile concerns, and turn to the glorious and holy rule of our tradition. Let us note what is good, what is pleasing and acceptable to Him who made us. Let us fix our eyes on the blood of Christ and let us realize how precious it is to his Father, since it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of repentance to the whole world. Let us go through all the generations and observe that from one generation to another the Master “has afforded an opportunity of repentance” to those who are willing to turn to him. Noah preached repentance and those who heeded him were saved. Jonah preached destruction to the Nivevites; and when they had repented of their sins, they propitiated God with their prayers and gained salvation despite the fact that they were not God’s people.

7장 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 우리는 이러한 맥락에서, 여러분을 권고할 뿐만 아니라 우리 자신을 일깨우기 위해, 이 서신을 씁니다. 우리는 동일한 투기장(鬪技場) 안에 있고 동일한 투쟁 중에 있기 때문입니다. 그러므로 우리는 실속 없고 덧없는 일에서 벗어나 우리의 전통 안에 있는 영광스럽고 거룩한 법으로 복귀해야 합니다. 무엇이 선하고, 무엇이 우리를 지으신 분께 기뻐하시고 받으실 만한 것인지 주목합시다. 우리의 눈을 그리스도의 보혈에 고정하고, 그것이 그분의 성부 하나님께 얼마나 귀중한 것인지 깨달읍시다. 그 보혈이 우리의 구원을 위해 흘렸고, 온 세상에 회개의 은혜를 가져왔기 때문입니다. 모든 세대들을 지나쳐 살펴보고, 주께서 각 세대에 그분께 기꺼이 돌아가려는 자들에게 “회개의 기회를 주셨음”을 깨달읍시다. 노아는 회개를 권고했고, 그의 말을 들은 자들은 구원받았습니다. 요나는 니느웨 사람들에게 멸망을 선언했고, 그들이 죄를 회개했을 때 그들은 기도로 하나님의 진노를 누그러뜨렸고, 하나님의 백성이 아니었음에도 구원받았습니다.

 

8 The ministers of God’s grace spoke about repentance through the Holy Spirit, and the Master of the universe himself spoke of repentance with an oath: “For as I live, says the Lord, I don’t desire the death of the sinner, but his repentance.” He added, too, this generous consideration: “Repent, O house of Israel, of your iniquity. Say to the sons of my people, Should your sins reach from earth to heaven, and be redder than scarlet and blacker than sackcloth, and should you turn to me with your whole heart and say ‘Father!’ I will heed you as though you were a holy people.” And in another place this is what he says: “Wash and become clean: rid your souls of wickedness before my eyes. Cease from your wickedness, learn to behave well, devote yourselves to justice, rescue the wronged, uphold the rights of the orphan and grant the widow justice. And come, let us reason together, says the Lord; and if your sins are like purple, I will make them white as snow, and if they are like scarlet, I will make them white as wool. And if you are willing and heed me, you shall eat the good things of the earth. But if you are unwilling and do not heed me, the sword shall devour you. For it is the mouth of the Lord that has spoken thus.” Since, therefore, he wanted all those he loved to have an opportunity to repent, he confirmed this by his almighty will.

8장 하나님의 종들은 성령으로 말미암은 회개를 말했고, 온 세상의 주님께서는 친히 맹세하시며 회개를 말씀하셨습니다: “주께서 말씀하시길, 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노니, 나는 죄인이 죽기를 바라지 않고 회개하기를 바란다.” 또한 그분께서는 이 관대한 말씀을 하셨습니다: “이스라엘아, 너희 죄를 회개하라. 내 백성에게 이르라. 너희 죄가 땅에서 하늘까지 닿고 진홍보다 붉고 통회의 베옷보다 더 검을지라도, 너희들이 온 마음으로 내게 돌아와 ‘아버지!’라고 하면, 나는 마치 너희가 거룩한 백성인 것처럼 너희의 간구를 듣겠다.” 다른 곳에서는 그분께서 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다: “씻어 깨끗해지라. 내 눈앞에서 너희의 영혼의 악함을 제하라. 악을 그치고, 바르게 행하기를 배우며, 힘써 의를 좇고, 학대받는 자들을 구하고, 고아들의 법적 권리를 보호하고, 과부를 공의롭게 대하라. (주께서 말씀하시길) 와봐라. 우리 한 번 따져보자. 너희 죄가 자줏빛 같을지라도 나는 그것을 눈 같이 희게 할 것이고, 그것이 주홍빛 같을지라도 나는 그것을 양털같이 희게 하겠다. 그리고 너희가 기꺼이 내 말을 듣겠다면, 너희는 땅의 좋은 소산들을 먹을 것이다. 그러나 너희가 싫어하여 내 말을 듣지 않으면 칼이 너희를 삼킬 것이다. 주의 입이 이것을 말씀하셨다.” 그러므로 그분께서는 그분을 사랑하는 모든 자들이 회개할 기회를 얻기 원하시기에, 그분의 전능한 의지로 이것을 확증하셨습니다.

 

 

 

9 So, then, let us fall in with his magnificent and glorious intention, and let us prostrate ourselves before him as suppliants of his mercy and kindness. Let us turn to his compassion and give up useless ventures and strife, and rivalry that leads to death. Let us fasten our eyes on those who have served his magnificent glory to perfection. Let us take Enoch, for instance, who, because he proved upright by his obedience, was translated and never died. Noah proved faithful in his ministry and preached a new birth to the world. Through him, therefore, the Master saved those living creatures that entered peacefully into the ark. 10 Abraham, who was called “The Friend,” proved faithful in obeying God’s words. It was obedience which led him to quit his country, his kindred, and his father’s house, so that, by leaving a paltry country, a mean kindred, and an insignificant house, he might inherit God’s promises. For he told him: “Depart from your country and from your kindred and from the house of your father, and go to a land which I will show you. And I will make you great among the nations and I will bless you and I will make your name great and you will be blessed. And I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you, and all the tribes of the earth will be blessed through you.” And again, when he separated from Lot, God told him: “Lift up your eyes and from where you now are look to the North, the Sough, the East, and the West, for all the land that you see I will give you and your seed forever. And I will make your seed like the dust of the earth. If anybody can count the dust of the earth, then your seed will be counted.” And again he says: “God led Abraham out and told him: Look up to heaven and count the stars, if you can. That is how numerous your seed will be! And Abraham believed God and this was put down to his credit as an upright deed.” Because of his faith and hospitality a son was granted to him in his old age, and he obediently offered him as a sacrifice to God on one of the hills which he indicated. 11 Because of his hospitality and religious devotion, Lot was saved from Sodom, when the whole countryside was condemned to fire and brimstone. In that way the Master made it clear that he does not forsake those who put their hope on him, but delivers to punishment and torment those who turn away from him. Of this latter, to be sure, his wife became an example. After quitting the city with him, she changed her mind and fell out with him, with the result that she became a pillar of salt that exists to this day. In this way it was made evident to all that the double-minded and those who question God’s power are condemned and become a warning to all generations.

12 Because of her faith and hospitality Rahab the harlot was saved. For when the spies were sent to Jericho by Joshua the son of Nun, the king of the land got to know that they had come to spy on his country. Consequently he sent out men to capture them, intending to arrest them and put them to death. The hospitable Rahab, however, took them in and hid them in a room upstairs under stalks of flax. When the kings’s men learned of it, they said to her: “The men who are spying on our country went into your house. Bring them out, for this is the king’s command.” But she at once answered, “The men you seek came into my house, but they immediately departed and are on their way,” and she pointed in the opposite direction. And she said to the men: “I am absolutely certain that the Lord God is handing this country over to you; for fear and terror of you have fallen on all its people. When, therefore, you come to take it, rescue me and my father’s house.” And they said to her: “It shall be exactly as you say. When you learn of our approach, you shall gather together all your family under your roof and they shall be saved. But whoever is found outside the house will perish.” And in addition they gave her a sign that she should hang a piece of scarlet from her house. By this they made it clear that it was by the blood of the Lord that redemption was going to come to all who believe in God and hope on him. You see, dear friends, that not only faith but prophecy as well is exemplified in this woman.

13 Let us then, brothers, be humble and be rid of all pretensions and arrogance and silliness and anger. Let us act as Scripture bids us, for the Holy Spirit says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man of his might or the rich man of his wealth. But let him that boasts boast of the Lord; and so he will seek Him out and act justly and uprightly.” Especially let us recall the words of the Lord Jesus, which he uttered to teach considerateness and patience. For this is what he said: “Show mercy, that you may be shown mercy. Forgive, that you may be forgiven. As you behave to others, so they will behave to you. As you give, so will you get. As you judge, so you will be judged. As you show kindness, so will you receive kindness. The measure you give will be the measure you get.” Let us firmly hold on to this commandment and these injunctions so that in our conduct we may obey his holy words and be humble. For Holy Scripture says, “On whom shall I look except on him who is humble and gentle and who trembles at my words?”

14 It is right, then, and holy, brothers, that we should obey God rather than follow those arrogant and disorderly fellows who take the lead in stirring up loathsome rivalry. For we shall incur no ordinary harm, but rather great danger, if we recklessly give ourselves over to the designs of men who launch out into strife and sedition to alienate us from what is right. Let us be kind to one another in line with the compassion and tenderness of him who created us. For it is written: “The kind shall inhabit the land, and the innocent shall be left upon it. But those who transgress shall be destroyed from off it.” And again he says: “I saw an ungodly man exalted and elevated like the cedars of Lebanon. But I passed by and, look, he had vanished! And I searched for his place and could not find it. Maintain innocence and have an eye for uprightness, for a man of peace will have descendants.”

15 Let us, then, attach ourselves to those who are religiously devoted to peace, and not to those who wish for it hypocritically. For somewhere it is said, “This people honors me with its lips, but its heart is far removed from me.” And again, “They blessed with their mouth, but they cursed with their heart.” And again it says: “They loved him with their mouth, but they lied to him with their tongue. Their heart was not straightforward with him, and they were not faithful to his covenant. Therefore let the deceitful lips that speak evil against the righteous be struck dumb.” And again: “May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips and the tongue that boasts unduly and those who say, ‘We will boast of our tongues; our lips are our own; who is Lord over us?’ Because of the wretchedness of the poor and the groans of the needy I will now arise, says the Lord. I will place him in safety: I will act boldly in his cause.”

16 It is to the humble that Christ belongs, not to those who exalt themselves above his flock. The scepter of God’s majesty, the Lord Jesus Christ, did not come with the pomp of pride or arrogance, though he could have done so. But he came in humility just as the Holy Spirit said of him. For Scripture reads: “Lord, who has believed what we heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Before him we announced that he was like a child, like a root in thirsty ground. He has no comeliness or glory. We saw him, and he had neither comeliness nor beauty. But his appearance was ignominious, deficient when compared to man’s stature. He was a man marred by stripes and toil, and experience in enduring weakness. Because his face was turned away, he was dishonored and disregarded. He it is who bears our sins and suffers pain for us. And we regarded him as subject to toil and stripes and affliction. But it was for our sins that he was wounded and for our transgressions that he suffered. To bring us peace he was punished: by his stripes we were healed. Like sheep we have all gone astray: each one went astray in his own way. And the Lord delivered him up for our sins; and he does not open his mouth because he is abused. Like a sheep he is led off to be slaughtered; and just as a lamb before its shearers is dumb, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation his condemnation ended. Who shall tell about his posterity? For his life was taken away from the earth. Because of the transgressions of my people he came to his death. And I will give the wicked as an offering for his burial and the rich for his death. For he did no iniquity and no deceit was found in his mouth. And the Lord’s will is to cleanse him of his stripes. If you make an offering for sin, your soul will see a long-lived posterity. And the Lord’s will is to do away with the toil of his soul, to show him light and to form him with understanding, to justify an upright man who serves many well. And he himself will bear their sins. For this reason he shall have many heirs and he shall share the spoils of the strong, because his life was delivered up to death and he was reckoned among transgressors. And he it was who bore the sins of many and was delivered up because of their sins.”

And again he himself says: “I am a worm and not a man, a disgrace to mankind and despised by the people. All those who saw me mocked me, they made mouths at me and shook their heads, saying: ‘He hoped on the Lord. Let him rescue him, let him save him, since he is pleased with him!’”

You see, dear friends, the kind of example we have been given. And so, if the Lord humbled himself in this way, what should we do who through him have come under the yoke of his grace? 17 Let us be imitators even of those who wandered around “in the skins of goats and sheep,” and preached the coming of the Christ. We refer to the prophets Elijah and Elisha ㅡ yes, and Ezekiel, too ㅡ and to the heroes of old as well. Abraham was widely renowned and called the Friend of God. When he gazed on God’s glory, he declared in his humility, “I am only dust and ashes.” This is what is written about Job: “Job was an upright and innocent man, sincere, devout, and one who avoided all evil.” But he was his own accuser when he said, “There is none who is free from stain, not even if his life lasts but a single day.” Moses was called “faithful in all God’s house” and God used him to bring His judgment on Egypt with scourges and torments. Yet even he, despite the great glory he was given, did not boast; but when he was granted an oracle from the bush, said: “Who am I that you send me? I have a feeble voice and a slow tongue.” And again he says, “I am but steam from a pot.”

18 And what shall we say of the famous David? God said of him, “I have discovered a man after my own heart, David the son of Jesse: I have anointed him with eternal mercy.” But he too says to God; “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your great mercy; and according to the wealth of your compassion wipe out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin, for I acknowledge my transgression and my sin is ever before me. Against you only have I sinned; and I have done evil in your sight. The result is that you are right when you speak and are acquitted when you are judged. For, see, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sin did my mother bear me. For, see, you have loved the truth: you have revealed to me the mysteries and secrets of your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be cleansed. You shall wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. You will make me hear joy and gladness: the bones which have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn your face from my sins and wipe away all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my very core. Cast me not away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit away from me. Give me back the gladness of your salvation, and strengthen me with your guiding spirit. I will teach your ways to the wicked, and the godless shall turn back to you. Save me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue will rejoice in your righteousness. You will open my mouth, O Lord, and my lips will proclaim your praise. For if you had wanted sacrifice, I would have given it. You will not find pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifice for God is a broken spirit: a broken and a humbled heart, O God, you will not despise.”

18장 유명한 다윗에 대해 무슨 말을 할까요? 하나님께서 그에 대하여 “나는 내 맘에 드는 자를 발견했다. 이새의 아들 다윗이다. 나는 영원한 자비로 그에게 기름을 부었다(그를 왕으로 삼았다)”라고 했습니다. 그러나 그 또한 하나님께 이렇게 말합니다: “오 하나님, 주의 크신 자비로움으로 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오. 주의 크신 측은한 마음으로 제 죄를 씻어주십시오. 제 불의함을 완전히 씻어주시고, 제 죄를 씻어주소서. 저는 제 죄를 인정하고, 제 죄가 항상 제 앞에 있습니다. 주께만 제가 죄를 범했습니다. 주님 목전에서 제가 악을 행했습니다. 그리하여 주께서 말씀하실 때 그 말씀은 옳고, 주께서 판단 받으실 때 주께서는 아무 오점이 없으십니다. 나는 죄악 중에 잉태되었고, 죄 가운데 제 어미는 저를 낳으셨습니다. 주께서는 진리를 사랑하시고, 주께서는 제게 주님의 지혜의 신비와 비밀들을 보여주셨습니다. 우슬초로 제게 물뿌려 주시어 저를 깨끗게 하소서. 주께서 저를 씻으시어 눈보다 더 희게 하소서. 주께서 저로 기쁘고 즐거운 소리를 듣게 하소서. 주께서 낮추신 뼈들이 즐거워할 것입니다. 제 죄를 보지 마시고 제 모든 죄악들을 없애주소서. 오 하나님, 제 안에 정한 마음을 창조하시고, 제 중심에 바른 영을 새롭게 하소서. 주님 앞에서 저를 몰아내지 마시고, 성령을 제게서 거두지 마소서. 주의 구원의 기쁨을 다시 제게 주시고, 주의 인도하시는 영으로 저를 힘 있게 하소서. 저는 악인들에게 주님의 도를 가르칠 것이고, 악인들은 주께로 돌아올 것입니다. 오 하나님, 나의 구원의 하나님, 살인죄에서 저를 구하소서. 내 혀는 주님의 의를 기뻐할 겁니다. 오 주여, 주께서 제 입을 여실 것이고, 제 입은 주를 찬양할 것입니다. 주께서 제물을 원하셨다면 제가 드렸을 것입니다. 주께서는 번제를 기뻐하지 않으십니다. 주님께서 바라시는 제물은 상한 심령입니다. 오 하나님, 주께서는 상하고 겸허한 심령을 멸시치 않으십니다.”1)

19 The humility and obedient submissiveness of so many and so famous heroes have improved not only us but our fathers before us, and all who have received His oracles in fear and sincerity. Since, then, we have benefited by many great and glorious deeds, let us run on to the goal of peace, which was handed down to us from the beginning. Let us fix our eyes on the Father and Creator of the universe and cling to his magnificent and excellent gifts of peace and kindness to us. Let us see him in our minds and look with the eyes of our souls on his patient purpose. Let us consider how free he is from anger toward his whole creation.

19장 수많은 유명한 영웅들의 겸손과 충실한 순종이 우리뿐만 아니라 우리에 앞선 선조들과 >경외심과 충성심으로 하나님의 계시를 받은 자들<을 향상시켰습니다. 그러므로 우리가 많은 위대한 영광스런 행위들로 인해 은택을 입었으니, 평화를 목표로 하여 계속 나아갑시다. 이 평화는 시초로부터 우리에게 이어져 내려온 것입니다. 우리의 눈을 이 우주만물의 아버지이시고 창조자이신 분께 고정하고, 우리에게 주어진 그분의 숭고하고 뛰어난 평화와 친절의 은사들에 집중합시다. 우리의 마음을 통해 그분을 보고, 우리의 영혼의 눈을 통해 그분의 끈기 있는 목적을 바라봅시다. 그분께서 자신의 전(全)피조물에 대한 진노에서 얼마나 자유로우신지 생각해봅시다.

 

20 The heavens move at his direction and peacefully obey him. Day and night observe the course he has appointed them, without getting in each other’s way. The sun and the moon and the choirs of stars roll on harmoniously in their appointed courses at his command, and with never a deviation. By his will and without dissension or altering anything he has decreed the earth becomes fruitful at the proper seasons and brings forth abundant food for men and beasts and every living thing upon it. The unsearchable, abysmal depths and the indescribable regions of the underworld are subject to the same decrees. The basin of the boundless sea is by his arrangement constructed to hold the heaped up waters, so that the sea does not flow beyond the barriers surrounding it, but does just as he bids it. For he said, “Thus far you shall come, and your waves shall break within you.” The ocean which men cannot pass, and the worlds beyond it, are governed by the same decrees of the Master. The seasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter, peacefully give way to each other. The winds from their different points perform their service at the proper time and without hindrance. Perennial springs, created for enjoyment and health, never fail to offer their life-giving breasts to men. The tiniest creatures come together in harmony and peace. All these things the great Creator and Master of the universe ordained to exist in peace and harmony. Thus, he showered his benefits on them all, but most abundantly on us who have taken refuge in his compassion through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and majesty forever and ever. Amen.

20장 하늘은 그분의 명령에 따라 움직이고, 평화롭게 그분께 순종합니다. 낮과 밤은, 다른 자신의 길을 가지 않고, 그분께서 정하신 길을 갑니다. 일월성신(日月星辰)은 그분의 명에 따라 절대 어긋남 없이 조화롭게 자신들에게 주어진 길을 갑니다. 그분의 뜻에 따라, 분쟁이나 >그분께서 정하신 그 어떤 것<도 변경함 없이, 땅은 정해진 때에 열매를 내고 사람과 짐승과 땅의 모든 생물들에게 풍족한 양식을 냅니다. 탐험할 수 없는 심연과 알 수 없는 지하 세계도 같은 하나님의 법을 따릅니다. 하나님의 계획하에 엄청난 크기의 대양(大洋)의 터가 만들어져 많은 물을 담아 바다가 자신의 경계를 넘어 흘러 나가지 않고 그분께서 명하신 대로 행합니다. 그분께서 “너는 여기까지만 이르고, 너의 물결은 네 안에서 부서진다”1) 말씀하셨습니다. 사람이 가로지를 수 없는 대양과 그 너머에 있는 세상도 동일한 주의 법에 지배됩니다. 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울, 이 사계절은 평화롭게 서로에게 자리를 내어줍니다. 바람들은 각자의 다른 위치에서 적당한 시기에 아무 방해를 받지 않고 자신의 일을 합니다. 기쁨과 건강을 주기 위해 만들어진 영원한 샘들은 인간에게 생명을 주는 유방들을 제공하는 일에 결코 그침이 없습니다. 가장 작은 생물들도 조화와 평화를 이룹니다. 위대하신 이 세상의 창조주이시고 주님이신 분께서 이 모든 것들이 평화롭고 조화롭게 있도록 정하셨습니다. 이와 같이 그분께서는 그것들 모두에게 은혜를 소나기처럼 내리셨지만, 특히 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님의 자비하심을 피난처로 삼은 우리에게 가장 큰 은혜를 베푸셨습니다. 주 예수께 영광과 권능이 영원 영원토록 있기를 빕니다. 아멘.
