To The Ephesians

에베소 교인들에게

 

Heartiest greetings of pure joy in Jesus Christ from Ignatius, the “God-inspired,” to the church at Ephesus in Asia. Out of the fullness of God the Father you have been blessed with large numbers and are predestined from eternity to enjoy forever continual and unfading glory. The source of your unity and election is genuine suffering which you undergo by the will of the Father and of Jesus Christ, our God. Hence you deserve to be considered happy.

“하나님의 영감을 받은 자”1) 이그나티우스가 예수 그리스도 안에서 참된 기쁨으로 아시아 에베소 교회에 애정어린 인사드립니다. 성부 하나님의 충만함2)으로부터 여러분은 큰 부흥(많은 수)의 축복을 받았고, 영원 전에 예정된 바에 따라 영원한 시들지 않는 영광을 누립니다. 여러분의 하나됨과 (하나님께) 선택받음의 근원은 바로 하나님 아버지와 우리의 하나님이신 예수 그리스도의 뜻에 따라 여러분이 겪으신 실제 고난입니다. 그러므로 여러분은 행복한 자들입니다.

1 I gave a godly welcome to your church which has so endeared itself to us by reason of your upright nature, marked as it is by faith in Jesus Christ, our Saviour, and by love of him. You are imitators of God; and it was God’s blood that stirred you up once more to do the sort of thing you do naturally and have now done to perfection. For you were all zeal to visit me when you heard that I was being shipped as a prisoner from Syria for the sake of our common Name and hope. I hope, indeed, by your prayers to have the good fortune to fight with wild beasts in Rome, so that by doing this I can be a real disciple. In God’s name, therefore, I received your large congregation in the person of Onesimus, your bishop in this world, a man whose love is beyond words. My prayer is that you should love him in the spirit of Jesus Christ and all be like him. Blessed is He who let you have such a bishop. You deserve it.

2 Now about my fellow slave Burrhus, your godly deacon, who has been richly blessed. I very much want him to stay with me. He will thus bring honor on you and the bishop. Crocus too, who is a credit both to God and to you, and whom I received as a model of your love, altogether raised my spirits (May the Father of Jesus Christ grant him a similar comfort!), as did Onesimus, Burrhus, Euplus, and Fronto. In them I saw and loved you all. May I always be glad about you, that is, if I deserve to be! It is right, then, for you to render all glory to Jesus Christ, seeing he has glorified you. Thus, united in your submission, and subject to the bishop and the presbytery, you will be real saints.

3 I do not give you orders as if I were somebody important. For even if I am a prisoner for the Name, I have not yet reached Christian perfection. I am only beginning to be a disciple, so I address you as my fellow students. I needed your coaching in faith, encouragement, endurance, and patience. But since love forbids me to keep silent about you, I hasten to urge you to harmonize your actions with God’s mind. For Jesus Christ ㅡ that life from which we can’t be torn ㅡ is the Father’s mind, as the bishops too, appointed the world over, reflect the mind of Jesus Christ.

4 Hence you should act in accord with the bishop’s mind, as you surely do. Your presbytery, indeed, which deserves its name and is a credit to God, is as closely tied to the bishop as the strings to a harp. Wherefore your accord and harmonious love is a hymn to Jesus Christ. Yes, one and all, you should form yourselves into a choir, so that, in perfect harmony and taking your pitch from God, you may sing in unsion and with one voice to the Father through Jesus Christ. Thus he will heed you, and by your good deeds he will recognize you are members of his Son. Therefore you need to abide in irreproachable unity if you really want to be God’s members forever.

4장 그러므로 여러분은 감독의 심정으로 행동해야 하고, 여러분은 과연 그리 행하고 있습니다. 명칭에 걸맞고 하나님의 명예가 되는 여러분의 장로회는 실로 현악기(하프)에 매인 줄들처럼 감독에게 단단히 매여 있습니다. 그렇기에 여러분의 일치와 조화로운 사랑은 예수 그리스도께 드리는 찬송입니다. 그렇습니다, 한 사람과 모든 자들, 여러분은 스스로 합창단을 이루어, 완전한 조화 가운데, 하나님으로부터 여러분의 음조(音調)를 받아, 한목소리로 예수 그리스도를 통하여 성부 하나님께 제창을 불러야 합니다. 그러면 그분께서 여러분의 기도를 들으시고, 여러분의 착한 행실들을 보시고 여러분이 그분의 독생자의 지체들임을 인정해 주실 것입니다. 그러므로 여러분이 영원히 하나님의 지체들이 되기 원한다면 흠잡을 데 없는 일치를 이루어야 합니다.

 

5 If in so short a time I could get so close to your bishop ㅡ I do not mean in a natural way, but in a spiritual ㅡ how much more do I congratulate you on having such intimacy with him as the Church enjoys with Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ with the Father. That is how unity and harmony come to prevail everywhere. Make no mistake about it. If anyone is not inside the sanctuary, he lacks God’s bread. And if the prayer of one or two has great avail, how much more that of the bishop and the total Church. He who fails to join in our worship shows his arrogance by the very fact of becoming a schismatic. It is written, moreover, “God resists the proud.” Let us, then, heartily avoid resisting the bishop so that we may be subject to God.

5장 보통의 방법으로는 안 되겠지만, 영적으로 내가 극히 빠른 시간 내에 여러분의 감독에게 근접할 수 있다면, 나는 교회가 예수 그리스도와의 친밀을 누리고, 예수 그리스도께서 성부 하나님과의 친밀을 누리시는 것처럼 여러분이 그(감독)와의 친밀을 누리는 이유로 더욱 여러분을 축하해야겠지요. 이것이 바로 모든 곳에서 일치와 조화가 우세하게 자리잡는 방법입니다. 그 일에 실수 하지 말기 바랍니다. 어떤 자가 성소 안에 있지 않다면, 그는 하나님의 떡(빵)이 없습니다. 그리고 한 두 사람의 기도가 매우 유용한 것이라면, 감독과 온 교회가 드리는 기도는 얼마나 더 효과가 있겠습니까? 우리의 예배에 함께 하지 않는 자는, 분리자라는 사실로 인해 자신의 교만을 드러내고 있습니다. 더욱이 이런 말씀이 있습니다: “하나님께서는 교만한 자를 물리치신다.”1) 그러므로 우리는 하나님께 복종하기 위해, 감독을 거부하는 것을 진심으로 거부해야 합니다.

6 The more anyone sees the bishop modestly silent, the more he should revere him. For everyone the Master of the house sends on his business, we ought to receive as the One who sent him. It is clear, then, that we should regard the bishop as the Lord himself. Indeed, Onesimus spoke very highly of your godly conduct, that you were all living by the truth and harboring no sectarianism. Nay, you heed nobody beyond what he has to say truthfully about Jesus Christ.

6장 여러분이 감독이 겸손히 침묵함을 볼수록 더욱 그를 존경해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 집주인이신 분께서 업무차 파송한 어떤 자든, 우리는 그 자를 그를 보내신 분으로 여기고 영접해야 하기 때문입니다. 그러므로 분명한 것은, 우리는 감독을 주님 자신으로 여겨야 한다는 것입니다. 실로 오네시무스는 여러분의 경건한 행위를 매우 높게 평가하여 >여러분 모두가 진리 가운데 살고 파벌정신을 품지 않는다<고 했습니다. 아니, 여러분들은 진실되게 예수 그리스도에 관해 해야 할 말을 넘어선 것은 그 어떤 자의 말이라도 듣지 않았습니다.

 

7 Some, indeed, have a wicked and deceitful habit of flaunting the Name about, while acting in a way unworthy of God. You must avoid them like wild beasts. For they are mad dogs which bite on the sly. You must be on your guard against them, for it is hard to heal their bite. There is ony one physician ㅡ of flesh yet spiritual, born yet unbegotten, God incarnate, genuine life in the midst of death, sprung from Mary as well as God, first subject to suffering then beyond it ㅡ Jesus Christ our Lord.

7장 실로 어떤 자들은 하나님과 관계된 그 이름(the Name)을 과시하면서도 그분의 영광을 해치는 행위를 하는 악하고 기만적인 습성이 있습니다. 여러분은 그들을 야생 동물 피하듯 피하십시오. 그들은 조용히 타인을 무는 미친개들이기 때문입니다. 그들에 대한 경계를 늦추지 마십시오. 그들에게 물린 상처는 치료가 힘듭니다. 오직 한 의사가 계시니, 그분은 육체가 있으시나 영적인 분이시고, 태어나셨으나 남자에 의해 나신 게 아니고, 성육신 하신 하나님, 사망 가운데에서의 참된 생명, 하나님으로부터 뿐만 아니라 마리아에게서 나시었고, 먼저 고통을 받으신 후 그것을 넘어서신 우리 주 예수 그리스도이십니다.

 

8 Let no one mislead you, as, indeed, you are not misled, being wholly God’s. For when you harbor no dissension that can harass you, then you are indeed living in God’s way. A cheap sacrifice I am, but I dedicate myself to you Ephesians ㅡ a church forever famous. Carnal people cannot act spiritually, or spiritual people carnally, just as faith cannot act like unbelief, or unbelief like faith. But even what you do in the flesh you do spiritually. For you do everything under Christ’s control.

8장 사람들이 여러분을 그릇된 길로 인도하지 못하게 하십시오. 실로 여러분은 온전히 하나님의 소유로 잘못 인도되지 않습니다. 여러분은 여러분을 괴롭힐 수 있는 분쟁을 거부할 때 참으로 하나님의 방식으로 살고 있습니다. 나는 값싼 제물이지만, 영원히 유명한 교회인 여러분 에베소 교인들에게 나를 바칩니다. 신앙이 불신앙처럼 행할 수 없고 불신앙이 신앙처럼 행할 수 없듯, 육적인 사람은 영적으로 행할 수 없고 영적인 사람은 육적으로 행할 수 없습니다. 여러분이 매사에 그리스도의 지도하에 행하기 때문입니다.

 

9 I have heard that some strangers came your way with a wicked teaching. But you did not let them sow it among you. You stopped up your ears to prevent admitting what they disseminated. Like stones of God’s Temple, ready for a building of God the Father, you are being hoisted up by Jesus Christ, as with a crane (that’s the cross!), while the rope you use is the Holy Spirit. Your faith is what lifts you up, while love is the way you ascend to God.

9장 내가 듣기로는 몇몇 외부인들이 악한 교훈을 가지고 여러분에게 들어왔다고 합니다. 그러나 여러분은 그들이 그것을 씨뿌리지 못하게 했습니다. 여러분은 그들이 퍼트리는 것을 막기 위해 귀를 막았습니다. 여러분은 성부 하나님의 성전 건축을 위해 준비된 하나님의 성전의 돌들처럼, 마치 기중기(이것은 십자가!)가 사용되듯 예수 그리스도에 의해 올려지고 있습니다. 여러분이 사용하는 줄은 성령이십니다. 여러분을 끌어 올리는 것은 여러분의 믿음이고, 사랑은 여러분이 하나님께 올라가는 길(방식)입니다.

 

You are all taking part in a religious procession, carrying along with you your God, shrine, Christ, and your holy objects, and decked out from tip to toe in the commandments of Jesus Christ. I too am enjoying it all, because I can talk with you in a letter, and congratulate you on changing your old way of life and setting your love on God alone.

여러분 모두는 신앙의 행진에 참여하고 있습니다. 여러분의 하나님, 성소, 그리스도, 거룩한 물건들을 몸에 지니고, 머리에서 발끝까지 예수 그리스도의 명령들로 장식하고 말입니다. 나 또한 이 모든 것을 즐기고 있습니다. 내가 여러분과 서신왕래를 통해 말할 수 있고, 여러분이 옛 삶의 방식을 버리고 여러분의 사랑을 오직 하나님께만 향하게 한 것을 축하할 수 있기 때문입니다.

 

10 “Keep on praying” for others too, for there is a chance of their being converted and getting to God. Let them, then, learn from you at least by your actions. Return their bad temper with gentleness; their boasts with humility; their abuse with prayer. In the face of their error, be “steadfast in the faith.” Return their violence with mildness and do not be intent on getting your own back. By our patience let us show we are their brothers, intent on imitating the Lord, seeing which of us can be the more wronged, robbed, and despised. Thus no devil’s weed will be found among you; but thoroughly pure and self-controlled, you will remain body and soul united to Jesus Christ.

10장 타인을 위한 “중보기도를 쉬지 마십시오”1). 그들이 회심하여 하나님께 올 수도 있기 때문입니다. 이 경우 그들은 적어도 여러분의 행위들을 보고 여러분에게 배울 수 있어야 합니다. 온유함으로 그들의 나쁜 성품을, 겸손으로 그들의 자랑을, 기도로 그들의 악폐를 변화시키십시오. 그들의 오류를 마주 대하여, “흔들리지 않는 믿음”2)을 가지십시오. 그들의 폭력에 온유로 대하고, 보복하려 하지 마십시오. 우리의 인내로 우리가 그들의 형제들임을 보입시다. 우리는 주님을 따르려 하는 자들이고, 우리 중에 어느 편이 더 부당한 취급 당하고, 강도 당하고, 무시 당해도 되는지 아는 자들이기에 그렇습니다 (기독교인들은 부당한 취급을 당해도 극복할 수 있는 존재라는 말임). 그리하여 마귀의 잡초가 여러분에게서 발견되지 않을 것이나, 여러분은 완전한 정결과 자제력을 갖추고 있어야 영과 육이 예수 그리스도께 연합되어 있을 것입니다.

11 The last days are here. So let us abase ourselves and stand in awe of God’s patience, lest it turn out to be our condemnation. Either let us fear the wrath to come or let us value the grace we have: one or the other. Only let our lot be genuine life in Jesus Christ. Do not let anything catch your eye besides him, for whom I carry around these chains ㅡ my spiritual pearls! Through them I want to rise from the dead by your prayers. May I ever share in these, so that I may be numbered among the Ephesian Christians who, by the might of Jesus Christ, have always been of one mind with the very apostles. 12 I realize who I am and to whom I am writing. I am a convict; you have been freed. I am in danger; you are safe. You are the route for God’s victims. You have been initiated into the [Christian] mysteries with Paul, a real saint and martyr, who deserves to be congratulated. When I come to meet God may I follow in his footsteps, who in all his letters mentions your union with Christ Jesus.

11장 마지막 날들은 이곳에서입니다. 그러므로 우리는 자신을 낮추고 하나님의 오래 참으심에 경의를 표하여 그 오래 참으심이 우리의 형벌이 되지 않게 합시다. 우리는 다가올 심판을 두려워하거나 우리가 받은 은혜를 소중히 여길 수 있을 뿐입니다. 양자택일입니다. 우리의 몫이 오직 예수 그리스도 안의 참된 생명만 되게 합시다. 그분 외에 그 어떤 것도 여러분의 눈을 끌게 해서는 안 됩니다. 그분으로 인하여 나는 나의 영적인 진주들(!)인 이 사슬들에 묶여 있습니다. 나는 여러분의 기도로 그것들을 통해 죽음에서 살아나기를 바랍니다. 내가 여러분과 이것들을 나누었으면 좋겠습니다. 그리하여 나도 >예수 그리스도의 권능으로 항상 사도들과 한 마음을 이룬 에베소 기독교인들< 무리에 들었으면 좋겠습니다. 12장 나는 내가 누구이고 누구에게 편지를 쓰고 있는지 압니다. 나는 기결수이고, 여러분은 자유인입니다. 나는 위험에 처했고, 여러분은 안전합니다. 여러분(의 지역)은 하나님의 희생제물들(순교할 자들)이 지나는 길입니다. 여러분은 >참된 성인이요 순교자인, 마땅히 축하받을 바울<과 함께 [기독교] 신비들에 입문했습니다. 내가 하나님을 뵙게 될 때, 내가 >자신의 모든 서신들에서 여러분과 그리스도의 연합을 언급한 그(바울)<의 선례를 따랐으면 좋겠습니다.

 

13 Try to gather together more frequently to celebrate God’s Eucharist and to praise him. For when you meet with frequency, Satan’s powers are overthrown and his destructiveness is undone by the unanimity of your faith. There is nothing better than peace, by which all strife in heaven and earth is done away.

13장 좀 더 많이 하나님의 성찬식을 거행하고 그분을 찬양드리는 집회를 여십시오. 여러분이 자주 모이면, 사탄의 권세가 전복되고 여러분의 일치된 신앙으로 그의 파괴행위가 꺾이기 때문입니다. 평화가 최고입니다. 평화로 하늘과 땅의 모든 분쟁이 그칩니다.

 

14 You will not overlook any of this if you have a thorough belief in Jesus Christ and love him. That is the beginning and end of life: faith the beginning and love the end. And when the two are united you have God, and everything else that has to do with real goodness is dependent on them. No one who professes faith falls into sin, nor does one who has learned to love, hate. “The tree is known by its fruit.” Similarly, those who profess to be Christ’s will be recognized by their actions. For what matters is not a momentary act of professing, but being persistently motivated by faith.

14장 여러분이 예수 그리스도에 대한 완전한 믿음이 있고 그분을 사랑한다면, 이런 것 어느 하나도 간과하지 않을 것입니다. 그것이 삶의 처음과 마지막입니다. 믿음은 시작이고 사랑은 마무리입니다. 이 둘이 연합하면 여러분은 하나님을 모신 자들이고, 실제적 선함과 관련된 그 외 다른 모든 것들은 그것들(믿음과 사랑)에 의존합니다. 신앙을 고백하는 자는 죄에 빠지지 않고, 사랑을 배운 자는 미워하지 않습니다. “나무는 그 열매로 평가받습니다.”1) 마찬가지로 자신이 그리스도의 것이라 말하는 자들은 자신들의 행위로 인정받아야 할 것입니다. 신앙에 의한 지속적 동기부여 없이 그 무엇이 순간적 공언행위가 아니란 말입니까?

15 It is better to keep quiet and be real, than to chatter and be unreal. It is a good thing to teach if, that is, the teacher practices what he preaches. There was one such Teacher, who “spoke and it was done”; and what he did in silence is worthy of the Father. He who has really grasped what Jesus said can appreciate his silence. Thus he will be perfect: his words will mean action, and his very silence will reveal his character.

15장 말만 많고 실속 없는 것보다는 침묵하고 실속 있는 게 낫습니다. 교사가 자신이 가르치는 것을 행할 때 가르치는 일이 선한 것입니다. 그러한 선생이 계십니다. 그분께서 “말씀하시니 그대로 되었고”1), 그분께서 침묵 중에 행하신 것은 성부 하나님의 행위라 불릴만합니다. 예수께서 말씀하신 것을 정말로 이해한 자는 그분의 침묵을 이해할 수 있습니다. 그리하여 그는 완전해질 것이고, 그의 말은 행위를 의미하고, 그의 침묵은 그의 성품을 드러낼 것입니다.

The Lord overlooks nothing. Even secrets are open to him. Let us, then, do everything as if he were dwelling in us. Thus we shall be his temples and he will be within us as our God ㅡ as he actually is. This will be clear to us just to the extent that we love him rightly.

주께서는 아무 것도 간과 안 하십니다. 비밀들도 그분의 눈을 피할 수 없습니다. 그러니 모든 일을, 그분께서 우리 안에 계신 듯이, 행합시다. 그리하여 우리는 그분의 성전이 될 것이고, 그분께서는 우리 안에 하나님으로 계실 것입니다. 그분께서는 실제로 하나님이십니다. 이것은 우리가 그분을 바로 사랑하는 만큼 우리에게 분명해질 것입니다.

 

16 Make no mistake, my brothers: adulterers will not inherit God’s Kingdom. If, then, those who act carnally suffer death, how much more shall those who by wicked teaching corrupt God’s faith for which Jesus Christ was crucified. Such a vile creature will go to the unquenchable fire along with anyone who listens to him.

16장 내 형제 여러분, 실수하지 마십시오. 간음하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 상속받지 못합니다. 그러니, 육적으로 사는 자들이 죽음을 맛본다면, 예수 그리스도께서 십자가 당하며 지키려 하셨던 하나님의 신의를 사악한 교훈으로 왜곡하는 자들은 얼마나 더 큰 죽음을 맛보겠습니까! 그처럼 악한 자들은 그들의 말을 듣는 모든 자들과 함께 꺼지지 않는 불에 들어갈 것입니다.

 

17 The reason the Lord let the ointment be poured on his head was that he might pass on the aroma of incorruption to the Church. Do not be anointed with the foul smell of the teaching of the prince of this world, lest he capture you and rob you of the life ahead of you. Why do we not all come to our senses by accepting God’s knowledge, which is Jesus Christ? Why do we stupidly perish, ignoring the gift which the Lord has really sent?

17장 예수께서 그분의 머리에 향유를 붓게 하신 것은 썩지 않음의 향기를 교회에 넘겨주시기 위함이었습니다. 이 세상의 지배자가 주는 교훈의 악취로 기름부음 받지 마십시오. 그리하여 그로 하여금 여러분을 사로잡아 여러분 앞에 놓인 생명을 강탈하지 못하게 하십시오. 왜 우리 모두는 하나님의 지식이신 예수님을 받아들임으로 제정신을 회복하지 않고 있나요? 왜 우리는 주께서 정말로 보내신 그 선물을 무시하며 어리석게 멸망하고 있나요?

 

18 I am giving my life (not that it’s worth much!) for the cross, which unbelievers find a stumbling block, but which means to us salvation and eternal life. “Where is the wise man? Where is the debater?” Where are the boasts of those supposedly intelligent? For our God, Jesus the Christ, was conceived by Mary, in God’s plan being sprung both from the seed of David and from the Holy Spirit. He was born and baptized that by his Passion he might hallow water.

18장 (내 생명이 큰 가치가 있는 건 아니지만!) 나는 >믿지 않는 자들은 거치는 돌로 여기지만 우리에게는 구원과 영생을 의미하는 예수님의 십자가< 때문에 내 생명을 바칩니다. “지혜로운 자가 누구인가? 토론가가 누구인가?”1) >아마 지적인 자들<의 자랑이 뭔가? 우리의 하나님 그리스도 예수께서, 하나님의 계획하에 다윗의 씨와 성령으로부터 발아하시어, 마리아에게 수태되셨기에 하는 말입니다. 그분께서는 자신의 수난으로 물을 신성하게 하시려 태어나 세례받으셨습니다.

19 Now, Mary’s virginity and her giving birth escaped the notice of the prince of this world, as did the Lord’s death ㅡ those three secrets crying to be told, but wrought in God’s silence. How, then, were they revealed to the ages? A star shone in heaven brighter than all the stars. Its light was indescribable and its novelty caused amazement. The rest of the stars, along with the sun and the moon, formed a ring around it; yet it outshone them all, and there was bewilderment whence this unique novelty had arisen. As a result all magic lost its power and all witchcraft ceased. Ignorance was done away with, and the ancient kingdom [of evil] was utterly destroyed, for God was revealing himself as a man, to bring newness of eternal life. What God had prepared was now beginning. Hence everything was in confusion as the destruction of death was being taken in hand.

19장 마리아의 동정(童貞)과 출산을 이 세상의 왕은 알아채지 못했고, 주의 죽음도 몰랐습니다. 이 세 비밀들은 외치고 있어 사람들의 입에 오르내리겠으나, 하나님의 침묵 중에 일어난 일들입니다. 그러면 어떻게 그것이 그 시대 사람들에게 드러났습니까? 모든 별들보다 더 밝게 한 별이 하늘에서 빛났습니다. 그 빛은 형언할 수 없었고, 그 신비로움은 놀라움을 주었습니다. 해와 달을 비롯한 그 외의 별들은 그것을 중심으로 원을 이루었지만, 그것이 그것들 모두를 압도하여 빛을 냈습니다. 그리고 이 진기한 새로움의 출처가 되는 당황스러움이 있었습니다. 그 결과 모든 마술(요술)이 힘을 잃었고, 모든 마법이 정지되었습니다. 무지는 제거되었고, 옛 [악(惡)의] 왕국은 완전히 파괴되었습니다. 하나님께서 영원한 생명이라는 새로운 것을 가져오시기 위해 자신을 인간으로 드러내고 계셨기 때문입니다. 하나님께서 준비하셨던 것이 이제 시작되고 있었습니다. 그러므로 사망을 파괴하는 일이 막 착수되고 있었기에 모든 것이 혼란에 빠져 있었습니다.

 

20 If Jesus Christ allows me, in answer to your prayers, and it is his will, I will explain to you more about [God’s] plan in a second letter I intend to write. I have only touched on this plan in reference to the New Man Jesus Christ, and how it involves believing in him and loving him, and entails his Passion and resurrection. I will do this especially if the Lord shows me that you are all, every one of you, meeting together under the influence of the grace that we owe to the Name, in one faith and in union with Christ, who was “descended from David according to the flesh” and is Son of man and Son of God. At these meetings you should heed the bishop and presbytery attentively, and break one loaf, which is the medicine of immortality, and the antidote which wards off death but yields continuous life in union with Jesus Christ.

20장 예수 그리스도께서 여러분의 기도를 들으시어 내게 허락하시고 또 그것이 그분의 뜻이라면, 내가 보내려고 하는 두 번째 서신에서 [하나님의] 계획에 대해 나는 여러분에게 좀 더 설명할 것입니다. 나는 신인(新人) 예수 그리스도에 관한 이 계획과 >그것이 그분을 믿고, 사랑하는 일과 어찌 관계되고, 그것이 어찌 그분의 수난과 부활을 수반하는지<에 대해 단지 간략히 언급했습니다. 특히 만약 주께서 >여러분 모두, 여러분 각자 모두, 그 이름(the Name)으로 말미암아 주어지는 은혜의 영향으로, 한 믿음으로, 그리스도와 연합함 가운데 함께 모인다면 나는 그 일을 하겠습니다. 이 그리스도께서는 “육신으로는 다윗의 자손”1)이시고, 사람의 아들이시고 하나님의 아들이십니다. 그러한 모임 때 여러분은 감독과 장로회의 말을 주의하여 듣고, 떡을 떼야 합니다. 그 떡은 불사(不死)의(영생의) 약이고, >죽음을 막아내고 예수 그리스도와의 연합 가운데 지속적 생명을 주는 해독제<입니다.

21 I am giving my life for you and for those whom you, to God’s honor, sent to Smyrna. I am writing to you from there, giving the Lord thanks and embracing Polycarp and you too in my love. Bear me in mind, as Jesus Christ does you. Pray for the church in Syria, whence I am being sent off to Rome as a prisoner. I am the least of the faithful there ㅡ yet I have been privileged to serve God’s honor. Farewell in God the Father and in Jesus Christ, our common hope.

21장 나는 여러분과 >여러분께서 하나님께 영광이 되도록 서머나로 보낸 자들<을 위해 내 생명을 바칩니다. 나는 주께 감사드리며, 그리고 나의 사랑으로 폴리갑과 여러분을 품으며 지금 여기서 여러분께 편지를 씁니다. 예수 그리스도께서 여러분을 마음에 품으시듯, 여러분께서도 나를 마음에 품으시기 바랍니다. 서머나에 있는 교회를 위해 기도하십시오. 이곳으로부터 나는 죄수로 로마로 이송될 것입니다. 나는 이곳의 신실한 신도들 중 가장 작은 자입니다. 하지만 나는 하나님의 영광을 위해 일할 특권을 부여받았습니다. 하나님 아버지와 우리의 공동의 소망이신 예수 그리스도 안에서 여러분께 평안을 빕니다.
