**-- 경건한 왕에 의해 그리스도의 나라가 개혁됨 --

 

Your Majesty must remember that sovereign power in this realm was entrusted to him by the supreme King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and that every soul was made subject to his royal authority, including the souls of bishops and all the clergy(Rom. 13:1)

전하께서 기억하셔야 할 바는 이것입니다: 이 나라의 주권(主權)은 최고 높으신 만왕(萬王)의 왕, 만주(萬主)의 주께서 전하께 맡겨주신 것이고, 주교들과 모든 성직자들을 포함한 만민(萬民)이 전하의 왕권의 지배하에 있습니다(롬13:1).

 

When true religion had seriously fallen apart in their times and the priesthood was perniciously corrupted, these men personally undertook the task of the renewal of religion as a matter of royal right and duty.

자신들(구약의 경건한 왕들)의 시대에 참된 여호와 종교가 심각히 훼손되고, 제사장 계층이 사악하게 타락했을 때, 이 왕들은 친히 종교개혁을 왕의 권한과 의무(본분)로 여기고 감행했다.

 

In these examples and histories, Your Majesty will clearly see, first, that it is within his official capacity to undertake the renewal of the important priestly order and office, just as the care for other estates and offices is within his prerogative.

이 예들과 역사들(구약의 사무엘서, 열왕기서, 역대기서의 사건들)에서 전하께서는 먼저 분명히 ‘다른 신분들과 직책들에 대한 감독이 전하의 특권에 속해 있듯이, >중대한 사제(司祭)의 계층과 직책에 대한 개혁을 시행함<이 전하의 공적(公的) 자격(역량)에 속함’을 보시게 됩니다.

 

With how much greater care and effort are men to be sought by Your Majesty to whom he will entrust not bodies but the very core of the religion of Christ to be preached anew in which is contained the eternal salvation of all.

>전하께서 기독교의 몸통(본체)들이 아니라 ‘만민의 영원한 구원을 담고 있는 바로 그 기독교의 핵심’을 맡기시어 새롭게 전파하게 할 자들<을 전하께서 큰 관심과 수고를 들여 찾으셔야 합니다.

 

But before all things else it is necessary that they have a solid knowledge of religion and are on fire with zeal for it, and also that they are equipped with the spiritual prudence necessary for the renewal and spread of the Kingdom.

그러나 무엇보다도 우선인 것은, 그들이 기독교에 대한 확고한 지식을 갖추고, 기독교에 대한 열정으로 불타고 있으며, 또한 >그리스도의 나라의 개혁과 확산에 필요한 영적 분별력<이 있어야 한다는 것입니다.

 

Furthermore, Your Majesty will consider this also from the Scriptural examples proposed that those devout kings and princes did not so much compel their people by decrees to recover the Kingdom of Christ as they persuaded them by serious and devout instructions.

또한 전하께서는 성경의 예들이 이것을 제안하고 있음을 보시게 됩니다: 경건한 왕들과 군주들은 명령을 발해 강제로 자신들의 백성이 그리스도의 나라를 회복하게 하기보다는 진지하고도 경건한 교육을 통해 그리 합니다.

 

For men do not accept law and observe it consistently, least of all divine law, unless they are first instructed and convinced that law is salutary for them.

사람들은 먼저 어떤 법이 자신들에게 유익한 것이라고 교육받고 확신하지 않는 한, 그것을 받아들이지도, 꾸준히 지키지도 않는다. 하나님의 법은 특히 더 그렇다.

 

Their whole lives, their habits of behavior and special interests, must be inquired into and explored, to see how strong a talent and a will they have for restoring the Kingdom of Christ.

그리스도의 나라의 회복을 위해 그들이 얼마나 강한 재능과 의지가 있는지 알아보기 위해 그들의 전체 삶, 행동의 습관, 특별한 관심들이 질문되어지고 조사되어야 한다.

 

From their previous life, as I have said, and their real fruits of piety, concerning which there should be weighty testimony of pious men and of the churches where the individual has lived or even ministered for some time, it must be established how much of a faculty and what gifts the Lord has given to each for the restoration of his Kingdom, and also with how great a desire and zeal he has inflamed the individual for this very thing.

전술(前述)한 바와 같이, 그들의 과거 삶으로부터, 그들의 경건의 실제 열매들(이에 관해서는 경건한 자들과 >그들이 다녔던 혹은 재직했던 교회들<의 확실한 증언이 있어야 함)로부터 >주께서 그분의 나라의 회복을 위해 그들에게 얼마나 많은 재능과 은사들을 주셨는지, 또 바로 그것을 위해 그분께서 그들 안에 얼마나 큰 욕망과 열정의 불을 일으키셨는지<가 확인되어야 한다.

 

Before all things else he commanded his apostles to preach the gospel of his Kingdom to all nations (Matt. 24:14).

무엇보다도 그분(Jx)께서는 그분의 사도들에게 그분의 나라에 관한 복음을 모든 나라들에게 전파(설교)하라 명하셨다(마24:14).

 

Because pious princes must plant and propagate the Kingdom of Christ also by the power of the sword, as by all the powers which they have received from the Lord, it is also their duty not to tolerate anyone who openly opposes and undermines the sound doctrine of the gospel.

경건한 군주(君主)들이 >그들이 주께 받은 다른 모든 힘들을 사용할 수 있듯< 칼의 힘도 사용하여 그리스도의 나라를 심고 확산시켜야 하므로, >공공연히 복음의 정통 교리를 반대하고 훼손하는 자들<을 용납하지 않는 것도 그들의 의무다.

 

In very many places, as they celebrated Masses before, so now they celebrate the Communion three times a day, and they designate them by the names of saints and of the mother of the Lord, calling them the Mass of Saint Nicholas, of the Blessed Virgin, or of other saints; and hardly anyone takes the sacrament of the Lord's Table, except the one sacrificing priest or the sacristan, and he unwillingly.

여러 곳에서 사람들은 전에 미사를 드렸듯이 지금은 하루에 세 번 성만찬을 거행하는데, 그들은 그것들의 명칭에 성인들과 성모 마리아를 사용한다. 그리하여 그것들을 성(聖) 니콜라스 미사, 성모 미사, 혹은 다른 성인(聖人)들의 미사라 불렀다. 그리고 희생제물을 드리는 사제나 성구(聖具) 보관인 외에는 성찬식 빵을 먹는 자들이 거의 없었고, 사제나 성구 보관인도 마지못해 먹었다.

 

Thus they make it possible for greedy men that they not only despoil ecclesiastical wealth and power but also gradually abolish the religion of Christ entirely.

그리하여 그들은 탐욕스런 자들로 하여금 교회 재산과 힘을 약탈하게 할 뿐만 아니라, 점차 기독교를 완전히 소멸케 했다.

 

Christ's religion entirely fails among the people when the Church's sacred ministry has been handed over to inept and unfaithful ministers.

교회의 거룩한 목회가 부적격의 불충한 목회자들에게 맡겨졌을 때 기독교는 세상에서 완전히 실패한다.

 

 

If in these colleges, as it has been dutifully determined, besides the two masters assigned to the art of medicine and the two to the science of civil law, all the rest would study sound theology and also reckon it their duty to teach it in the churches, how great a swarm of approved evangelists would then come for th for the churches!

이제까지 본분에 맞게 정해진 것처럼, 이 대학들에서 의학에 할당된 두 교수들과 법학에 할당된 두 교수들 외에 나머지 모든 교수들이 정통교리를 연구하고, 그것을 교회에서 가르치는 것을 자신들의 의무로 생각한다면, 얼마나 많은 검증된 복음전도자들이 배출되어 교회에 기여하겠는가!

 

But the plague of Antichrist has invaded also these colleges most seriously, so that very many in these colleges, after the fashion of the wicked monks and false canons, lazily abuse the good things of these colleges, decaying and growing old there in impious ease and preempting the place and opportunity of younger men who wish to dedicate themselves to true theology and the ministries of the churches. Not content with this perversity, although it is supremely damaging to the churches, most of them attack the pure doctrine of Christ wherever they can and dare and not only estrange the hearts of younger men from it but even frighten them away.

그러나 적그리스도의 역병이 아주 심각하게 이 대학들에도 침입하여, 많은 자들이 이 대학들에서, 사악한 수사(수도사)들과 가짜 수사 신부들의 행태를 본받아, 게으름을 피우며 이 대학들의 선한 것들을 남용했다. 즉 그들은 거기서 불경건한 안락을 누리며 쇠하고 늙어지며, >참된 신학과 교회의 목회에 헌신하려는 젊은이들<이 누려야 할 자리와 기회를 자기들이 앞서 차지하며 그리 한 것이다. 이 짓이 교회에 지대한 해를 끼치고 있음에도, 이 사악한 짓을 족하게 여기지 않고 그들 대부분은 감히 할 수만 있다면 그리스도의 순수 교의를 공격하고, 젊은이들의 마음을 그것에서 멀어지게 할 뿐만 아니라, 그들을 위협하여 쫓아내기까지 한다.

 

And so the smaller is the number of those to whom the work of evangelizing the Kingdom of Christ can be rightly entrusted, the more promptly and strictly will Your Royal Majesty institute and complete the reformation of both universities and of the colleges in these matters, so, that, first of all, no one will be allowed openly to oppose the pure doctrine of Christ. Secondly, those who have completed their period of learning and do not have every desire to adapt themselves to teaching the churches should leave the colleges as soon as possible in order to make the colleges free to provide room for younger men who are prepared faithfully to learn the communicate these things to the churches with utmost zeal.

그러므로 >그리스도의 나라를 전파하는 일이 마땅히 맡겨질 수 있는 자들<이 적을수록, 전하께서는 더욱 신속하고도 엄하게 이 문제들과 관련된 대학들의 개혁을 시작하시고 완성하시어, 무엇보다도 그 누구도 그리스도의 순수 교의를 공개적으로 반대하지 못하게 하셔야 합니다. 둘째로, 수학(受學) 기간을 다 채우고도 교회를 가르칠 의향이 전혀 없는 자들은 가급적 조속히 대학을 떠나게 해서, >그리스도의 나라에 관한 것들을 충실히 배우길 원하고, 때가 되면 최대한의 열정을 갖고 그것들을 전달하고자 하는 젊은이들<을 위한 대학의 자리를 확보하셔야 합니다.

 

There are involved here certain unwisely merciful men who have too much sympathy for the enemies of the Church of God or certainly for such as should clearly be excluded from the association with any church and the participation in its revenues (II Thess. 3:7-10), when the opportunity of damaging and defrauding the churches is taken away from these men according to the Lord's precept. They have more feeling for them than for the churches which are being defrauded by the ministry of these impious men and therefore gravely undermined. They cry out that it is inhuman and unworthy of the colleges to eject men who have been there for such a long time; that some deference must be had for their age and that we should be mindful of the commandment that we ought to do to others what we wish should be done to us (Matt. 7:12).

여기에는 ‘>하나님의 원수들<에 대한, >분명 교회에서 추방되고 교회의 재산을 넘보아서는 안 될 자들(살후3:7-10)<에 대한 너무 큰 동정심을 갖고 있는, 현명치 못한 자비심을 갖고 있는 자들’이 관계되어 있다. 바로 주님의 가르침에 따라 >이 자들이 교회에 손해를 입히고 교회 재산을 횡령할 기회<를 박탈해야 할 때에 말이다. 그들(그릇된 자비심의 소유자들)은 >이 불경건한 목회로 사취(詐取) 당하고, 따라서 심각히 훼손당하는 교회들< 보다는 그 사취자(詐取者)들에게 더 동정적이다. 그들은 >대학이 그토록 오래 거기에 머물러 있는 자들을 몰아내는 것이 몰인정하고 부당하고<, >그들의 나이에 걸맞은 경의를 표해야 하고<, >‘남이 나에게 해주기를 바라는 대로 남에게 그대로 해줘야 한다(마7:12)’는 명령을 지켜야 한다<고 주장한다.

 

By these objections they certainly demonstrate that they have not yet learned that all else must yield to the glory of Christ and the well-being of the churches, and that true charity and mercy are shown to one's neighbor when according to God's precept and in order that he might not wrong God and the Church, he is removed by legitimate force commanded by God if he cannot be dissuaded in any other way.

이런 변명으로 그들은 분명 아직 자신들이 다음의 사실을 배우지 못했음을 보여주고 있다: ‘모든 일은 그리스도의 영광과 교회의 유익을 위한 것이어야 하고, >이웃에 대한 참된 사랑과 자비<는, >하나님의 명령(가르침)에 따라, 그리고 그(이웃)가 하나님과 교회에 나쁜 짓을 못하도록<, 그 이웃이 다른 식으로는 악행의 단념의 설득이 되지 않을 때 하나님의 명령에 의한 적법한 강제력으로 그가 축출됨으로 이루어진다.’

 

Must compassion be shown to them, and must they be permitted still longer to afflict the churches of God with such damage?

그들에 대한 동정심을 가져야 하고, 그들은 여전히 계속하여 그런 피해를 입히며 하나님의 교회를 괴롭히는 짓이 허용되어야 하나?

 

With respect to those who unworthily control them and thus seriously compromise the churches, the manner of procedure and the rendering of mercy must consist in this, that Your Majesty deny them every occasion of afflicting the churches of God with such great wrongs and bring it about that the interests of the churches will be taken care of by suitable ministers, so necessary for the eternal salvation of the faithful, rather than by the godless laziness and gluttony of those pretenders. Cicero, a pagan writer, stated this as the first law of the bond of friendship, "that we should seek from friends only what is decent," and "pursue" only "honest causes of friends," and "not ask anything shameful of friends nor do such things when asked" (in Laelio).

>부당하게 대학들을 지배하고, 그리하여 교회를 심각하게 손상시킨 자들<에 대한 대처절차와 자비의 베풂은 이와 같아야 합니다: 전하께서는 그들에게 >그런 큰 죄악으로 하나님의 교회를 괴롭힐 기회<를 절대 주지 마시고, >저 위선자들의 불경스런 게으름과 탐욕에 의하기 보다는< >신실한 자들의 영원한 구원에 긴요한, 적격의 목회자들에 의해< 교회의 유익을 꾀하셔야 합니다. 이교도 저술가 키케로가 >우정의 약속의 첫 조항<으로 이것을 말했습니다: “우리는 친구들에게서 >흉하지 않은 것<만을 구하고, >친구들의 정직한 목적<만을추구해야 하며, >친구들에게 불명예가 되는 것<은 요구하지도, 그것을 요구받았을 때에는 행하지도 않아야 한다. (우정)”

 

Let us be warned by those horrible punishments suffered by the priest Eli (I Sam. 2:27-36; 4:12-18), King Saul (I Sam., ch. 15), and the whole people of Israel because of an impious indulgence and unwise mercy toward those against whom, by the command of God, who alone is truly merciful and clement, they ought to have exercised severity lest we think that any indulgent concessions are to be made to anyone against God's precept and against the well-being of the churches. Christian mildness and mercy must be exhibited to the sheep of Christ in order to protect them from the wolves, and not to the wolves that they may scatter and destroy the sheep.

엘리(삼상2:27-36, 4:12-18), 사울 왕(삼상15장)과 전(全) 이스라엘 백성이, >우리로 하여금 ‘하나님의 명령에 반(反)하여, 교회의 유익에 반하여 어떤 자에게 관대한 용인을 해도 된다’고 생각하지 못하도록< >오직 홀로 참으로 자비로우시고 관대하신 하나님<의 명령에 따라 엄히 처단했어야 할 자들에 대한 불경건한 관대(혹은 방종)와 현명치 못한 자비 때문에 당한 끔찍한 형벌로부터 경고를 받읍시다. 기독교의 관용(온유)과 자비는, 양들을 흩어버리게 하고 멸망시키도록 늑대들에게 베풀기보다는, 그리스도의 양들을 늑대들로부터 보호하기 위해 그 양들에게 베풀어야 합니다.

 

(오늘날의 종교사기꾼들은 교회에 머물면서 교회에 해악을 끼치면서도 성도들의 사랑과 존경과 돈을 맘껏 향유한다. 교회와 성도와 그리스도께 해악을 끼치면서도 >자신들을 향한 미움은 비성경적이고, 오직 자신들은 사랑만 받을 자격이 있다<고 성도들을 세뇌시킨다. 누가 종교사기꾼인가? 위법, 탈법, 편법 동원하여 하나님의 영광을 가리고 교회를 파괴하며 제 아들에게 교회 세습 시킨 자들과 그 아들들, 자본주의 재벌 마인드로 목회를 해서 황제 목회를 하며 제 집안 식구들 배만 채워 사회의 지탄을 받은 자들, 성범죄자들, 교회 돈 횡령한 자들이 이 대표적 종교사기꾼들이다.

 

교회를 살리고 교회의 성도들을 살리는 길은 지금이라도 저 종교사기꾼들을 교회와 기독교에서 축출하는 것이다. 더 이상 예수님의 양들이 저 사기꾼들에 의해 더럽혀진 복음을 꼴로 먹고 영과 육이 죽어서는 안 된다. 저런 사기꾼들 때문에 많은 예수님의 양들이 교회를 떠났다. 그들이 다시 예수님의 품으로 돌아오게 교회를 청소해야 한다.

 

평신도 교회 책임자들은 자기 교회 담임 목사가 기독교계와 사회로부터 존경을 받지 못하는 종교사기꾼이라는 판단이 확실히 들면, 사명감을 가지고 그런 종교사기꾼을 몰아내서 예수님의 양들을 보호해야 한다.

 

이런 거룩한 일을 하려 할 때면 종교사기꾼은 이미 자기 사람으로 만들어 놓은 교인들과 교단의 여러 자기편의 목사들을 동원하여 극렬히 저항할 것이다. 그래서 나는 예수님의 몸인 교회와 예수님의 양들인 성도들을 보호하기 위해 다음과 같이 선언한다:

 

>>1. 교회를 떠나라는 성도들의 정당한 요구를 무시하고 계속 교회에 머무르려 하는 종교사기꾼 목사

2. 저런 종교사기꾼을 추종하여 그 자가 계속 교회에 머물도록하기 위해 교회의 담임 목사 교체 과정을 반대하고 방해하는 그 목사의 부하(부목사나 평신도)들

3. 교회법에 따라 개 교회의 담임 목사 교체 절차를 진행할 책임이 있음에도 이를 속히 실행하지 않는 상위 기관의 장

 

위의 사람들은 예수님의 교회를 파괴하는 >마귀의 종들<이므로 이들의 죄가 영원히 용서받지 못하고 최후 심판 때 다 지옥에 떨어질지어다. .... 하나님의 종 김종택(Z^_stevision)<<

 

그리고 목사나 평신도를 막론하고 어떤 교회의 정당한 >담임 목사 교체 과정<을 방해하거나 고의로 절차를 진행하지 않아 그 과정을 진행 못하게 하면, >업무방해< 혐의로 검찰에 형사고발하고, 그 자를 상대로 손해배상 청구도 할 수 있다. 또한 교회 일 방해하는 자에 대한 >교회 접근금지<도 법원에 신청할 수 있고, 그것을 어기면 형사고발 할 수도 있다. 직무유기를 한 상위 기관의 장에 대해서는 >직무유기로 인한 교회의 정신적 피해배상< 소송을 제기할 수도 있다. 정부의 공권력은 하나님께서 주신 강제력이므로 필요하다면 이 공권력을 사용하여 종교사기꾼들을 결박하여 교회 밖 어두운 곳에 던져 내쫓아 선량한 양들을 보호해야 한다. 교회일은 가급적 세속 법정에서 해결하지 않고 교회 내에서 해결하는 것이 옳으나, 종교사기꾼들의 억지 주장과 불법 폭력이 있다면 당연히 교회는 국가 권력을 사용하여 교회를 지켜도 된다.

Let the bishops therefore finally acknowledge their very serious guilt, that they have for so long a time and so horribly not so much neglected as devastated the churches.

그러므로 결국 주교(감독)들은 >그토록 오랜 기간 그토록 끔찍하게 교회를 (방치했다기보다는) 황폐시킨 자신들의 심각한 죄<를 인정해야 한다. (양심의 가슴에 손을 얹고 생각해보자. 지금 한국 기독교가 사회의 지탄의 대상이 되고 전도의 길이 막힌 것이 타락한 평신도 탓인가, 타락한 탐욕스런 목사들 탓인가? 예수님 시대의 종교인들은 과거 구약 시대의 종교인들을 비판하면서도 자신들도 똑같은 짓을 했고, 오늘날의 기독교 종교인들은 예수님 시대의 종교인들을 설교 때마다 비판을 하면서 자신들도 똑같은 짓을 하고 있는 게 문제다. 이 악순환을 끊는 것은 교회가 단호히 불쌍히 여기지 말고 종교사기꾼들을 기독교에서 몰아내는 것밖에 없다. 예수님의 교회여, 대체 몇 번을 더 속아야 정신을 차리시겠습니까? 교회와 양들을 약탈하는 늑대들의 악행을 눈감아주는 게 사랑입니까, 그런 늑대들을 추방하여 교회와 양들을 지키는 게 사랑입니까? 암세포 잘라내면 그것이 죽어 불쌍하다고 그것을 그냥 몸에 놔둡니까? 한국 교회 안에 처음 종교 사기꾼 한두 명 나타났을 때 그들을 그냥 교회 내에 살게 두었다가 지금 한국 교회 전체에 얼마나 치명적인 암세포가 퍼졌습니까? 지금 한국 기독교에 기독교 정신이 사라졌습니다!)

 

First, just as all by most holy Baptism have been made members of Christ's Kingdom and then received the covenant of eternal salvation, so Your Royal Majesty will make a law that orders parents to educate and establish their children in Christ's faith and obedience with great care, with a just penalty appointed for those who themselves infect their children with either false doctrine or bad morals or permit them to be infected by others. Next, it must provide that they diligently make the Church's catechism known to them when they are old enough to understand it.

첫째로, 모든 자들이 거룩한 세례로 그리스도의 나라의 일원이 되었고, 영원한 구원의 언약(계약)을 받아들였기에, 전하께서는 >부모들로 하여금 큰 책임감을 가지고 그들의 자녀들을 그리스도에 대한 믿음과 순종에 이르도록 가르치고 성장시키게 함을 명하는 법<을 제정하셔야 하고, 자신이 자식들을 거짓 교리와 패륜에 빠지게 하거나, 다른 자들에 의해 그들이 그런 상태가 되게 허용한 부모에게는 마땅한 형벌을 부과해야 합니다. 다음으로, 그 법은 자녀들이 교리문답을 이해할 수 있을 만큼 성장했을 때 부지런히 그들에게 교회 교리문답을 알려야 한다는 규정을 둬야 합니다.

 

Decent recreation must indeed be conceded to the people at the proper times, but since God has so severely prohibited useful corporal works on days sanctified to his name, how much the more gravely is he offended when those days are profaned by sporting and works for the most part harmful?

허용 가능한 오락은 적당한 시기들에는 사람들에게 허용될 수 있다. 그러나 하나님께서 그분께 성별된 날들에는 경제적(유용한) 육체노동도 엄히 금하셨는데, 그 날들이 >대부분 해로운 스포츠나 일<로 인해 더럽혀지면 얼마나 그분께서 더 크게 진노하시겠는가!

 

The Lord has prescribed that his people assemble in his name on these days in order to hear his word, pour forth prayers to him, give thanks for benefits received, share in his sacraments, make holy offerings, and so establish all piety (Isa. 58:18; 66:23; Jer. 17:21; Acts 13:14-15).

주께서는 >그분의 백성이 이 날에 그분의 이름으로 모여서 그분의 말씀을 배우고, 그분께 기도드리고, 받은 은혜를 감사하고, 성만찬을 나누고, 거룩한 예물을 드려서 모든 경건을 이루도록< 정하셨다(사58:18, 66:23, 렘17:21, 행13:14-15).

 

How great a contempt of God is committed by men in this, when they neglect the correct observance of days set aside by our God for the establishment and accomplishment of our eternal salvation.

>우리 하나님에 의해 우리의 영원한 구원의 확립과 완성을 위해 성별된 날들<의 올바른 준수를 우리가 게을리 하면, 이 일이 얼마나 하나님께 큰 모욕을 범함이 되겠는가!

 

 

So it is necessary to remove this scandalous offense against the Divine Majesty, not only by the teaching of the word of God and pious exhortations but also by severe laws of pious kings and princes, and by the prompt and consistent enforcement of these laws. Thus it may be brought about that the holy churches of God are open for no other activities except those for which they were sanctified to the Lord and that no one can with impunity fail to adapt himself to the atmosphere of religious worship there.

그러므로 하나님의 위엄에 대적하는 이러한 괘씸한 범죄는 >하나님의 말씀과 경건한 권고뿐만 아니라, 경건한 왕들과 제후들의 지엄한 법들로, 이 법들의 즉각적이고도 철저한 집행을 통해< 막아야 합니다. 그리하여 하나님의 거룩한 교회가 >주님께 봉헌된 목적에 맞는 활동들<만을 위해 사용되게 하고, 그곳의 거룩한 예배 분위기를 훼손하는 자는 반드시 처벌해야 합니다.

 

The salvation of your people, therefore, demands of Your Majesty that he establish a law which will forbid the use of churches consecrated to the Most High for any other activities except those for which they were consecrated by the Lord, namely, only for the reading and explanation of the Sacred Scriptures, the administration of the sacraments, prayers and thanksgivings, and the exercise of ecclesiastical discipline.

그러므로 >전하의 백성의 구원<을 위해 전하께서 하셔야 할 일은 전하께서 ‘>하나님께 바쳐진 교회<를 >주께서 그것을 성별하시며 정하신 사용 목적들<, 곧 성경을 읽고 설명함, 성례전 집전, 기도와 감사, 교회의 권징 외(外)의 다른 용도로 사용하는 것을 금하는’ 법을 제정하시는 것입니다.

 

This task will be of utmost difficulty, as there has frequently been, sad to say, an almost infinite perversity in every rank and oder of the clergy, and as Antichrist strenuously protects his fortress and his plunder, closing off every approach to the Kingdom of Christ as soon as he can.

이 과업(교회의 목회사역 회복)은 지극히 어려운 일이 될 것입니다. 슬프게도 지금까지 빈번히 모든 성직자 계층(계급)과 단체가 거의 무한대의 사악함에 빠졌고, 적그리스도가 자신의 요새와 약탈물을 굳세게 지키고, 할 수만 있다면 그리스도의 나라에 이르는 모든 길을 차단하기 때문입니다.

 

All things are easy, if a pious and consistent effort is made, with assiduous work.

경건한 견실한 노력과 부지런한 행동이 있다면 모든 일이 쉽습니다.

 

It is necessary that bishops before all other ministers and caretakers of the churches, putting away from themselves all the matters and affairs of the world, devote themselves totally to the reading and teaching of the Holy Scriptures, pouring forth private and public prayers to God; and to all kinds of ministry both of the doctrine and the discipline of Christ, adorning these with an exemplary life so as to render themselves more commendable to the people of God; and also to the care of schools and the poor.

감독들은, 교회의 다른 교역자들이나 관리자들에 앞서, 세상의 모든 문제와 일에서 벗어나 온전히 성경을 읽고 가르치는 일, 하나님께 드리는 사적, 공적 기도, 그리스도의 교의와 기강과 관련된 모든 사역에 전념하고, 이것들을 모범된 삶으로 장식하여 하나님의 백성들로부터 칭송을 받고, 또한 학교들과 빈자(貧者)들도 돌보는 일에 전념할 필요가 있다.

 

Cephas, Paul, and Apollo, and the whole world belong to the churches of Christ; the churches, however, belong to no one but our one King and Lord Jesus Christ, just as he belongs to God (I Cor. 3:22-23).

게바(베드로), 바울, 아볼로, 그리고 온 세계는 그리스도의 교회들에 속해있고, 교회들은 오직 우리의 왕이시고 주님이신 예수 그리스도께만 속해있고, 그분(Jx)께서는 하나님께 속해있다(고전3:22-23).

 

The ancient churches had the custom, if a bishop ever became useless for his ministry, through age or sickness, of supplying someone as a coadjutor for him, to discharge the episcopal duty for the people of Christ in the interim; how much more, therefore, must those suitable for the episcopal office be substituted today for those who, in sickness of spirit and poor health of mind, prevent the churches from having true bishops, so much so that they are not only useless to the churches but even harmful.

옛 교회들은, 어떤 주교(감독)가 나이나 질병으로 자기 사역을 감당할 수 없게 되면, 그를 대신할 보좌주교 한 사람을 세워서 잠시 그리스도의 백성을 위한 주교임무를 수행토록 하는 관례가 있었다. 그러니 오늘날 >영이 병들고 마음이 병약한 가운데 ‘교회가 참된 주교를 소유하는 것’을 방해하고, 그게 너무 심해 교회에 무익할 뿐만 아니라 해롭기까지 한 자들<을 >주교 직책에 적합한 자들<로 교체하는 것이 얼마나 더 마땅한가!

 

 

They take no interest in establishing schools or caring for the poor, but they squander the episcopal income mostly on profane persons and the secular pomp in which they parade themselves like satraps.

그들은 학교를 세우거나 빈자(貧者)를 돌보는 데에는 관심이 없고, 주교 수입을 대부분 속인(俗人)들과 세속적 화려함(이 화려함 가운데 그들은 장관들처럼 자신들을 과시함)에 낭비하고 있다.

 

Because it is the duty of the bishops to administer the churches not by their own arbitrary judgment alone, but with the counsel of presbyters and the ministry of deacons, it will be necessary, inasmuch as the ministries of the churches are now all dissipated and disordered, to join to each of the bishops, even if he is much approved, a certain council of presbyters and the ministry of deacons.

자신의 독단적 판단으로 하기보다는, 사제들의 조언과 부제(副祭)들의 목회의 도움으로 교회들을 관리하는 것이 주교들의 의무이기에, 교회들의 목회가 지금 다 소진되고 혼란에 빠져있으니 각 주교들은, 그들이 매우 검증된 자라 할지라도, 사제들의 조언과 부제들의 목회의 도움을 받을 필요가 있다.

 

It is not enough for someone in order that he take on this responsibility that he can preach well; what must be required, as I have already advised, is a solid knowledge of the whole pastoral function and a permanently solicitous concern for the building up of the churches, and each of these must be thoroughly investigated and approved for the churches on the basis of the candidate's past life.

어떤 자가 이 책임을 맡는 데에는 >설교를 잘 할 수 있는 것<만으로는 충분치 않고, 거기에 확실히 필요한 것은, 이미 내가 조언한 바와 같이, >목회의 전(全) 기능에 대한 확실한 지식<과 >건실한 교회 경영에 대한 끊임없는 뜨거운 관심<이고, 이것들 하나하나는 후보자의 과거 삶에 근거하여 철저히 조사되고 교회에서 공인되어야 한다.

 

If any of these men injuriously occupying parishes truly mend their ways, and, having rejected their impiety, are converted to the Lord, the churches must make sure that they have the necessities of life, so that nothing is wanting for them to live well and piously.

부당하게 교구들을 차지하고 있는 이들 중 어떤 자들이 진정 자신들의 행실을 고치고, 자신들의 불경건(不敬虔)을 버린 후 주님께 돌아오면, 교회는 반드시 그들에게 생필품이 있게 하여 경건히 잘 사는 데 부족함이 없게 해야 한다.

 

To be sure, we must feed even our enemies if they are hungry and give them drink if they thrist (Rom. 12:20), but in such a way that they will not find an opportunity in this kindness for making trouble for the churches of God, or for despoiling them of all spiritual and material advantages.

분명 우리가 원수들이 배고플 때 먹을 것을 주고 목마를 때 마실 것을 줘야 하나(롬12:20), 그들이 이 호의를 하나님의 교회들에 고통을 주거나, 그 교회들의 모든 영적, 물질적 자산(장점)을 약탈(파괴)하는 데 악용하게 하면 안 된다.

 

We know that it has been ordered that every bishop and priest ought to be not only irreprehensible, but also singularly adorned with all manner of virtues (I Tim. 3:2-7), and tenacious in faithful speech for teaching the people of Christ, "that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine, and also to confute those who contradict it" (Titus 1:7-9).

>모든 주교(감독)들과 사제들이 도덕적으로 흠이 없을 뿐만 아니라, 남다른 모든 덕들을 갖춰야 하고(딤전3:2-7), 그리스도의 백성을 가르침에 있어 충실한 설교를 고집하여, 정통교리로 가르치고 그것을 부인하는 자들을 논박할 수 있게 되어야 한다는(딛1:7-9)< 명령이 있음을 우리는 알고 있다.

 

They must first be tested and thus admitted to these ministries (I Tim. 3:10; 5:22).

그들은 먼저 검증받아야 하고, 그런 다음에야 이 목회사역에 들어서게 해야 한다(딤전5:10, 5:22).
