단원 5 두아디라 교회

성경본문: 계2:18-29

계속하여 두아디라 교회를 살펴보자. 여기서 내가 특히 강조하고 싶은 것이 있다. 즉 에베소 교회가 나타난 것은 사도시대 이후이고, 에베소 다음에는 서머나, 그 다음은 버가모, 그 다음은 두아디라라는 것이다. 사도시대도 지났고, 에베소 시대도 지났고, 고난의 시대도 지났고, 버가모 시대도 지나서 두아디라가 나타난 것이다. 하지만 두아디라 교회는 주 예수께서 다시 오실 때까지 계속된다. 두아디라 교회뿐만 아니라 사데 교회, 빌라델비아 교회, 라오디게아 교회, 이 모두가 주 예수의 재림 때까지 지속된다. 이전의 세 교회에서는 주님의 재림이 언급되지 않았으나 그 후 나머지 네 교회에는 그때 그때마다 주님의 재림이 언급된다. 하지만 라오디게아 교회의 경우, 나중에 해명을 하겠지만, 그 교회와 관련된 특별한 사항이 있어서 주님의 재림을 명시적으로 말하고 있지는 않다. 따라서 나머지 네 교회 모두는 주 예수께서 다시 오실 때까지 지속될 것이다.

성서를 살펴보면 우리는 7이란 수가 완전수임을 알게 된다. "7"은 "3" 더하기 "4"이다. "셋"은 하나님의 수이다. 하나님 자신은 삼위일체 하나님이시다. "넷"은 하나님의 피조물을 말한다. 이는 네 방향, 네 방위, 네 계절 등과 같이 세상의 수이고 이들 모두는 숫자 "넷"을 가진다. "일곱"은 창조주와 피조물을 말한다. 하나님께 인간이 더해졌을 때 이는 완전이 된다. (그러나 이는 땅에서의 완전이다. 하나님께서는 "일곱"을 완전의 반열에 놓지 않으신다. 영원 속에서 완전함은 열둘이다. "7"은 "3" 더하기 "4"이고, "12"는 "3" 곱하기 "4"이다. 하나님과 인간이 함께 있을 때 이는 세상에서 완전함이 된다. 창조주와 피조물이 하나가 되었을 때 영원한 완전함이 된다.) "7"은 항상 "3" 더하기 "4"이다. 일곱 교회는 앞의 세 교회와 뒤의 네 교회로 나뉜다. 세 교회에는 주님의 재림이 언급되지 않았으나 나머지 네 교회에서는 주님의 재림이 언급된다. 따라서 세 교회가 한 동아리를 이루고 나머지 네 교회가 다른 동아리를 이룬다. 두아디라 교회는 주님의 재림 때까지 지속될 네 교회 중 첫번째 교회이다.

"두아디라"는 "향제(香祭)"를 의미한다. 즉 중다한 제물을 말한다. 주님의 말씀이 더욱 더 거세진다. 주께서는 당신 스스로를 "불꽃같은 눈을" 가지신 분으로 묘사한다. 그분의 존전에서 아무 것도 감추일 수 없다. 그분께서는 빛이시다. 그분 스스로 빛을 내신다. 동시에 주께서는 "당신의 발이 빛난 놋과 같다"고 하신다. 성경에서 놋은 심판을 의미한다. 눈에 보이는 것을 발이 심판한다. 모든 성서학자들은 두아디라 교회가 로마 카톨릭 교회를 지칭한다는 데에 동의한다. 이는 처음에 교회가 세상과 결혼하여 생긴 혼란을 말하는 것이 아니다. 이는 이미 지나간 이야기이다. 이제 상황은 너무 지독하여져서 이단과 희생제사가 만연해졌다. 로마 카톨릭 교회가 근본적으로 행위와 제사에 얼마나 많은 관심을 보이는지 정말 놀라울 지경이다. 미사는 그들의 제사이다.

 

Chapter Five

The Church In Thyatira

Now we will continue by looking at Thyatira. Here I must especially emphasize that it was after the church in the Apostolic Age had passed away that Ephesus came forth, and after Ephesus, Smyrna, and after Smyrna, Pergamos, and after Pergamos, Thyatira. The church during the Apostles’ time has passed, the age of Ephesus has passed, the age of sufferings has passed, the period of Pergamos has also passed, and that which follows is Thyatira. But the church of Thyatira will continue until the Lord Jesus comes back again. Not only Thyatira, but also Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea will all continue till the Lord Jesus returns. In the former three churches, there was no mention of the Lord’s coming again, but in the latter four, the coming back of the Lord Jesus is mentioned in each case. Laodicea, however, does not mention the Lord’s second coming literally because of something particular concerning her, as we will explain later. Therefore the latter four churches will all continue until the Lord Jesus comes again.

 

In the Bible, we see that the number “seven” is a number which signifies completeness. “Seven” is composed of “three” plus “four.” “Three” is the number of God; God Himself is three in one. “Four” is the creature of God; it is the number of the world, such as the four directions, the four winds, the four seasons, etc. ㅡ all contain the number “four.” “Seven” means the Creator plus the creature. When God is added to man, that is completion. (But this completeness is of this world ㅡ God never puts “seven” in eternity. The number of completeness in eternity is “twelve.” “Seven” is “three” plus “four”; “twelve” is “three” times “four.” When God and man are put together, that is completeness in this world. When the Creator and the creature are joined together, then there is eternal completeness) This number “seven” is always “three” plus “four.” The seven churches are divided into the first three churches and the last four. Three do not mention the Lord’s coming back, while the other four do mention the Lord’s coming again. Thus, three churches are of one group, while the other four are of another group. The church of Thyatira is the first among the four churches which will exist until the Lord Jesus comes again.

 

“Thyatira” means “the sacrifice of perfume,” that is, full of many sacrifices. The words spoken by the Lord become stronger and stronger. The Lord says that He is the One who has “eyes like a flame of fire.” Nothing can hide from His eyes. He is the light; he Himself is the illumination. At the same time He says that “his feet are like unto burnished brass.” In the Bible brass signifies judgment. What the eyes see, the feet judge. All Bible scholars agree that the church of Thyatira refers to the Roman Catholic Church. This does not refer to the confusion which resulted from the marriage with the world in the beginning ㅡ that is now over. Now the situation has become so gross, so full of heresy and sacrifice. It is indeed remarkable how the Roman Catholic Church pays so much attention basically to behavior and sacrifice. The Mass is their sacrifice.

"내가 네 사업과 사랑과 믿음과 섬김과 인내를 아노니 네 나중 행위가 처음 것보다 많도다." 주께서는 로마 카톨릭 교회 안에도 교회의 실체가 있음을 인정하신 것이다. 마담 가이푸(Madame Guypu), 타울러(Tauler), 피넬론(Fenelon), 이들 모두는 로마 카톨릭 신자들이다. 그리고 우리는 고귀한 이름들을 더 열거할 수 있다. 실로 로마 카톨릭 교회 안에 주님을 아는 자들이 많이 있다. 로마 카톨릭 교회 안에 구원받은 자들이 없다고 생각해서는 절대로 안된다. 주께서는 여전히 당신의 백성을 그곳에 두고 계신다. 주님 전에서 우리는 이 점을 잘 이해하고 있어야 한다.

우리가 지금 주목하고자 하는 것은 카톨릭의 겉모습이 어찌 그리도 황폐해졌는가이다. 먼저 우리는 니골라당의 행위를 알아보았다. 다음에 우리는 그것이 교훈화되었음을 보았다. 그런데 교회는 어떻게 되었는가? 주께서 말씀하신다. "그러나 네게 책망할 일이 있노라. 자칭 선지자라 하는 여자 이세벨을 네가 용납함이니 그가 내 종들을 가르쳐 꾀어 행음하게 하고 우상의 제물을 먹게 하는도다." 이세벨은 누구인가? 이세벨은 아합의 아내이고, 아합은 이방 땅 시돈 출신인 그녀와 결혼했다. 이세벨은 이스라엘을 꾀어 바알을 숭배케 했다(왕상16:30-32). 바알은 이방인의 신이지 이스라엘의 하나님이 아니었다. 그녀는 백성들로 바알상(像)을 섬기라 했다. 문제는 우상이 아니라 하나님이 교체되었다는 것이다. 바알이 들어와 이스라엘의 신처럼 섬겨졌다는 말이다. 왕상 16장 이전의 이스라엘 역사에 아무도 아합과 같이 이스라엘로 범죄케 하지 않았다. 최초로 대대적으로 이방신을 섬기게 한 자가 아합이다. 여로보암의 죄조차 아합이 행한 죄에 견줄 수 없다.

이세벨이 누구인지 알아보자. 이세벨은 여자이다. 계시록 19장의 여인은 로마 카톨릭을 지칭한다. 마태복음 13장에서 가루 서말 속에 누룩을 넣은 여인도 로마 카톨릭 교회이다. 그러므로 자연히 여기에 나오는 여자도 로마 카톨릭 교회를 말한다.

하나님께서는 당신의 백성이 이방인들과 결혼하는 것을 절대로 정상적인 것으로 여기지 않으신다. 하나님께서는 이것을 간음이라 하셨다. 따라서 이세벨은 왕후가 아니었고, 아합과 이세벨이 하나가 된 것은 간음이 된다. 간음은 혼란이다. 하나님께서 여기서 주목하시는 것은 하나님 말씀과 하나님의 백성을 혼돈에 빠뜨리는 한 여자이다. 이 여자가 들여온 것이 이방신이다. 전술한 바와 같이 음행의 결과는 우상숭배이다. 신약성서는 예루살렘 회의를 말하고 있는데, 그 회의의 결과는 이방인 형제들에게 우상에게 바쳐진 음식을 금하고, 음행을 금할 것을 권하는 것이었다(행15:29). 여기서 우리가 볼 수 있는 것은 그 여자의 음행이 이스라엘 왕국에 우상을 들여왔다는 것이다.

이세벨을 통해 아합은 세상과 하나가 되었다. 세계 어느 곳에서든 로마 카톨릭 교회는 정치 권력과 자신을 유착시킨다. 로마 카톨릭 교회는 여러 나라에 대사와 장관을 파견하고, 중대한 분쟁 지역에 뭔가 한 마디 하려고 모습을 드러낸다. 교회와 세상과의 유착이 로마 카톨릭 교회이다. 그들은 제 1대 교황이 베드로라고 주장한다. 그러나 내 생각에 베드로가 이런 말을 할 것 같다. 나는 나사렛 사람 가난한 예수의 제자라오. 세상의 영광과 명예는 나와 아무 상관 없소. 그럼에도 불구하고 로마 카톨릭 교회는 세상 안에서 자신의 위치를 주장하고 사람들로부터 존경을 모으고 있다. 이 일천 년의 세월 동안 로마 카톨릭 교회가 보여준 바는 야고보서 말씀을 빌리자면 엄청난 간음이다. 여기서 우리가 보는 것은 교회가 자신의 처녀성을 잃었다는 것이다. 오늘날 사람들은 그들이 그토록 많은 신자들을 소유한 이후로 다른 자들과 흥정할 수 있었다고 본다. 사람의 예로 보면 이는 교회가 흥정할 수 있게 된 것으로 하나의 진보라 하겠으나, 하나님 편에서 보면 이는 교회가 세상이 가진 것을 얻고자 하려는 죄이다.

결과는 무엇이었나? 우상숭배였다. 우리 앞에 증거들이 널려 있다. 로마 카톨릭 교회같이 그처럼 많은 우상을 소유한 교파가 없다. 우리가 주장할 수 있는 것은 최고급 우상들이 로마 카톨릭 교회에 의해 만들어졌다는 것이다. 나는 한달 간 로마에 있었다. 그 기간에 계속하여 내 마음에 와 닿은 것이 있었다. 그것은 그들의 교회가 진짜 교회이면 우리 교회는 교회가 아니고, 우리 교회가 진짜라면 그들의 교회는 진실로 가짜라는 것이다. 이 둘이 함께 할 중간 지대는 없다. 놀랄만한 것은 성서에 예언된 모든 것을 그들이 행했다는 것이다. 성부상, 성자상이 있었다. 사도들의 상과 과거 성자들의 상이 있었다. 그들은 마리아를 숭배하고 베드로를 숭배했다. 여기 당신은 이세벨이 어떻게 하여 주의 종들로 음행케하고 우상에 드려진 제물을 먹도록 가르쳤는지 알 수 있다. 교회가 이방신을 들여와서 이세벨이 언급된 것이다. 우리는 이러한 것을 펨버(G. 그 여자는 말씀을 선포하고 가르치기 위하여 자신을 여선지라 불렀다. 하나님 앞에 선 교회의 위치는 여인의 위치와 같다. 교회가 말씀을 선포할 권한을 가질 때 이세벨이 된다. 교회는 할 말이 없다. 환언하여, 교회는 말씀을 갖고 있지 않다. 하나님의 독생자께서 말씀이시다. 따라서 오직 그분만이 말씀을 가지신다. 그리스도께서는 교회의 머리이시다. 그래서 오직 그분만이 말씀하실 수 있다. 교회가 말할 때마다 그것은 이세벨의 말씀선포가 되는 것이다. 로마 카톨릭 교회에는 교회가 하는 말만 있지 성서나 주께서 하시는 말씀은 없다. 놀랍게도 하나님께서는 여기서 이세벨이 여선지이고 그녀가 말하고 있다고 하신다. "나의 종들"은 개인의 종들을 말한다. 이세벨은 모든 신자를 지시할 권한을 갖고 있다. 로마 카톨릭 교인들은 성서를 읽지 않는다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 뜻하신 바를 오해할까봐 그것이 두렵기 때문이다. 오직 신부만 이해할 수 있고 오로지 신부만 말할 수 있다. 이렇게 그들만이 만사를 결정한다. 근본적으로 로마 카톨릭 교회는 하나님의 자녀들이 행할 바를 결정하는 여인의 가르침이다. 많은 교리들이 바뀌었다. 그 이유는 로마 카톨릭이 자신들이 주장하는 바가 그것이고, 성도들이 교회에 복종해야 한다고 말했기 때문이다. 로마 카톨릭 교회는 신자들이 주님의 말씀에 귀기울이게 하는 데에는 관심이 없고 교회와 교황의 말을 따르게 하는데 관심이 있다.

The Roman Catholic Church, according to our observation, has nothing good, but God says, “I know thy works, and thy love and faith and ministry and patience, and that thy last works are more than the first.” The Lord acknowledges that there is reality in the Roman Catholic Church. Madame Guyon, Tauler, and Fenelon were all in the Roman Catholic Church, and we can mention many more of the best names. Indeed there are many in the Roman Catholic Church who know the Lord. Never think that there are none who are saved in the Roman Catholic Church. The Lord still has His own people there ㅡ of this we must be very clear before the Lord.

 

What we are taking note of now is how desolate the church has become in her outward appearance. First, we have seen the behavior of the Nicolaitans; later, we have seen it developed into a teaching. But what about the church now? The Lord says here, “But I have this against thee, that thou sufferest the woman Jezebel, who calleth herself a prophetess; and she teacheth and seduceth my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.” Who is Jezebel? Jezebel was the wife of Ahab, who married her from the land of the Zidonians, the Gentiles. Jezebel seduced the people to worship Baal (I Kings 16:30-32). Baal is the god of the Gentiles, not the God of the people of Israel. She told the people to worship the image of Baal. The problem now is not idols alone, but that god has been replaced: Baal was brought in and worshipped as their own god. In the history of the Jewish nation (Israel) up to I Kings chapter 16, no one had ever led the people of Israel to sin in such a way as Ahab. Ahab was the first to lead the people to worship a Gentile god on a large scale. Not even Jeroboam can match him in the sins he committed.

 

Here we want to note who Jezebel is. Jezebel is a woman. The woman in Revelation 17 refers to the Roman Catholic Church. In Matthew 13, the woman who took the leaven and hid it in three measures of meal is also the Roman Catholic Church. Naturally, therefore, the woman here also represents the Roman Catholic Church.

 

God never acknowledges the marriage between His people and the Gentiles as proper; God says that this is fornication. So Jezebel was not the queen; the coming together of Ahab and Jezebel was fornication. Fornication is confusion. What God sees here is a woman who is confusing the words of God and the people of God. What this woman brought in was the god of the Gentiles. I have already said that the result of fornication is idolatry. The New Testament mentions the conference at Jerusalem, the result of which was to exhort the Gentile brothers to abstain from meats offered to idols and from fornication (Acts 15:29). Here you see that the fornication of that woman has brought idols into the Kingdom of Israel.

 

Through Jezebel, Ahab was joined to the world. No matter where you are, it is apparent that the Roman Catholic Church unites herself with political powers. She sends out ambassadors and ministers to various nations, and in important world crises she stands up to speak. The uniting of the church with the world is the Roman Catholic Church. They claim that their first pope was Peter. But I think Peter would say, I am a disciple of the poor Jesus of nazareth; the glory and honor of the world have nothing to do with me. Yet the Roman Catholic Church maintains her position in the world and commands respect from the people. The phenomenon of the Roman Catholic Church within these more than one thousand years is, according to what the Epistle of James says, the greatest adultery. Here we see that the church has lost her virginity. Today there is a group of people who think that since they have such a large membership, they can bargain with others. According to men, it is a kind of advancement for the church to be able to bargain, but according to God, it is sin for the church to gain what the world has gained.

 

What is the result? Idolatry. The facts are placed before us; there is not one church that is like the Roman Catholic Church with so many idols. We can say that the best class of idols is made by the Roman Catholic Church. I stayed in the city of Rome for one month. During that time I continually felt one thing: If theirs is the Church, then ours is not; if ours is, then theirs surely is not. There is no middle ground for the two to come together. The remarkable thing is that they have fulfilled whatever has been prophesied in the Bible. There is an image of the Father and an image of the Son; there are images of the Apostles and images of the ancient saints. They worship Mary; they worship Peter. Here you see how Jezebel teaches the Lord’s servants to commit fornication and eat the meat offered to idols. Jezebel is mentioned because the church has brought in the Gentile gods. We can see this in the book entitled Mystery by G. H. Pember. They take in the Gentile gods and hang the signs of Christianity upon them. The most evident is the image of Mary. Some think that at least Mary is of Christianity itself. But the fact is this: Greece has a goddess, India has a goddess, Egypt has a goddess, except Christianity. Since there must be a goddess, they bring forth Mary. Actually there is no goddess in Christianity ㅡ the origin of the concept of a goddess is the Gentiles. so this is idolatry on top of fornication. This is Jezebel bringing in the things of the Gentiles to the Kingdom of Israel.

 

She calls herself a prophetess because she wants to preach and to teach. The position of the church before God is that of a woman. Whenever the church has authority to preach, that is Jezebel. The church has nothing to say; in other words, the church has no word. The Son of God is the Word; so only He has the word. Christ is the Head of the church; so only He can speak. Whenever the church speaks, that is the preaching of the woman. The Roman Catholic Church is the woman preaching. In the Roman Catholic Church, it is what the church says, not what the Bible says or what the Lord says. It is quite remarkable that God says here that Jezebel is the prophetess and the woman speaks. “My servants” refers to individual servants. Jezebel has the authority to direct every believer. The people in the Roman Catholic Church do not read the Bible, for they are afraid of mistaking what God means. Only the fathers can understand and only the fathers can speak; so only they can decide all matters. Basically the Roman Catholic Church is the preaching of the woman who decides what the children of God ought to do. Many doctrines have been changed, because she says that this is what the church says and people must listen to the church. What she pays attention to is not that people must listen to the Lord, but that people must listen to the church and to the pope.

"내가 그를 침상에 던질 터이요. 또 그로 더불어 간음하는 자들도 만일 그의 행위를 회개치 아니하면 큰 환난 가운데 던지고 또 내가 사망으로 그의 자녀를 죽이리니." 이러한 말씀은 아마도 하나님께서 적그리스도와 그의 추종자들을 통해 로마 카톨릭 교회를 멸망시키시리라는 것을 말한 것일 게다. "두아디라에 남아 있어 이 교훈을 받지 아니하고 소위 사단의 깊은 것을 알지 못하는 너희에게 말하노니 다른 짐으로 너희에게 지울 것이 없노라. 다만 너희에게 있는 것을 내가 올 때까지 굳게 잡으라." "두아디라에 남아있는 자들." 비록 이세벨이 여기 있으나 아직도 남은 자들이 있다. 이세벨이 엘리야를 죽이려 하자 이를 들은 엘리야는 매우 침통해 했다. 그가 무엇을 했는가? 그는 숨었다. 그러자 하나님께서 그에게 말씀하신다. "여기서 무엇하고 있느냐?" 엘리야가 투덜대고 있을 때 주께서 말씀하신다. "그러나 내가 이스라엘 가운데 칠천인을 남기리니(왕상19:9-18)." 두아디라 교회에 남아 있는 칠천인이 있다. 이세벨이 이 땅에 있었을 때 엘리야가 있었던 것처럼 로마 카톨릭 교회 안에도 주께 속한 자들이 많이 있다. 스페인뿐만 아니라 프랑스, 영국에도 화형당한 자들이 많다. 로마 카톨릭 교회 안에서 많은 자들이 피흘려 죽었다. 이것은 사실이다. 오늘날에도 로마 카톨릭 교회는 핍박을 하려 갖은 애를 쓴다(50여년 전 중국의 상황일까?; 역주). 주께 감사드리는 것은 아직도 이 교훈을 받지 아니하고 소위 사단의 깊은 것을 알지 못하는 자들, 즉 이와 같은 고백이 입에 붙어있는 많은 자들이 있다는 것이다. "깊은 것"은 그리스어로 "바테아(Bathea)"인데 이는 신비를 말한다. 로마 카톨릭 교회는 이 말을 굉장히 즐겨 사용한다. 그들은 그들 가운데 많은 신비, 즉 심오한 교리를 갖고 있다. 이러한 교리는 주께로부터 온 것이 아니라 이세벨의 말이다. 이 교리를 따르지 않는 자들에게 주께서는 다른 짐을 지우지 아니하시고 다만 이미 있던 것을 굳게 지키라 하신다. 네가 이미 알고 있는 "내 말"을 굳게 지켜라. 그것으로 충분하다. "내가 올 때까지" 이미 가지고 있는 것을 잃지 말아라.

"이기는 자와 끝까지 내 일을 지키는 그에게 만국을 다스리는 권세를 주리니 그가 철장을 가지고 저희를 다스려 질그릇 깨뜨리는 것과 같이 하리라. 나도 내 아버지께 받은 것이 그러하니라." 이것이 첫번째 약속이다. 그 의미는 무엇일까? 양을 치는 자는 다 지팡이를 갖고 있다. 양이 말썽을 피울 때 목자는 지팡이로 그것을 너그럽게 칠 수 있다. 마태복음 13장에 천사가 와서 그의 나라 가운데 거스르는 모든 것들을 모아, 이러한 불의한 것들을 강압적으로 던져 내쳐 버린다. 그러나 이 말씀이 천년왕국 때에 나라들이 없어진다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다. 우리는 그것들이 거기에도 여전히 있을 것이라는 것을 안다. 철장으로 하나님께서 그러한 것들을 산산조각 내실 것이다.

하나님께서 만드신 것은 돌이고 인간이 만든 것은 벽돌이다. 벽돌은 돌과 아주 많이 닮았다. 바벨탑은 벽돌로 만들어졌다. 바벨탑 시대부터 디모데후서에 이르기까지 주께서는 당신을 모방하는 자들을 가리켜 "질그릇" ("토기장이의 그릇")이라 하셨다. 주께서는 이긴자들이 만국을 다스리고 질그릇들을 산산조각 낼 것이라 말씀하신다. "다스린다"는 원전에 보면 "(가축을) 돌보다"이다. "돌보다"라는 말은 당장에 완성된 것을 말하지 않고 필요할 때마다 하나하나 두들겨 치는 것을 말한다. 이러한 일은 아마도 새 하늘과 새 땅이 임할 때까지 중단없이 계속될 것이다. 하나님 나라는 새 하늘과 새 땅의 서막이다. 새 하늘과 새 땅에서는 오직 의로움만 존재한다. 이것이 바로 여기서 만국을 다스리고 인간으로부터 나온 모든 것을 산산조각 내는 데 철장이 쓰이는 이유이다.

In church history, there were the persecutions of the Roman Empire, and there were also the persecutions of the Roman Catholic Church. When the Roman Catholic Church in Spain persecuted the children of God, we do not know how many she killed. The punishment they applied during the Inquisition was cruel to the extreme. They will always make you accept their doctrine. The Jewish nation (Israel) had only one woman who killed the prophets; it was Jezebel. In the previous centuries, we do not know how many witnesses died in the hands of the Roman Catholic Church. They claim that what they have decided is always right. The people’s ideas are entirely in their hands. The Lord says that the failure of Thyatira is due to the fact that she allows the teaching of Jezebel in her midst.

 

“And I gave her time that she should repent; and she willeth not to repent of her fornication.” They are still united with the world and filled with the behavior of the world “Behold, I cast her into a bed” ㅡ not into a coffin, but into a bed. A coffin means it is finished; a bed means it is not finished. It means that she will not be changed throughout her entire life. The patient cannot be cured and cannot be changed. Continuing in her present condition, she is incurable ㅡ this is the condition of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1926, Mussolini and the pope signed an agreement, setting aside the Vatican from Italy so that it may become an independent state, having its own court and police, etc. Believers in the Roman Catholic Church increase yearly. In China there is not one newspaper published by a Protestant church, yet the Roman Catholic Church owns a paper. Their number exceeds the Protestants by three or four fold. In Revelation chapter 17, we see to what extent this church will develop. Now it is undoubtedly becoming stronger and stronger. But the Lord says to His own people: Come ye out from them. What does the Lord say about those who have committed adultery with her and about her children? “I cast ... them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of her works. And I will kill her children with death” ㅡ these words probably refer to God’s destroying of the Roman Catholic Church through the anti-christs and their followers ㅡ “and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.”

 

“But to you I say, to the rest that are in Thyatira, as many as have not this teaching, who know not the deep things of Satan, as they are wont to say: I cast upon you none other burden. Nevertheless that which ye have, hold fast till I come.” “The rest that are in Thyatira”: although Jezebel is here, there are still the rest. When Jezebel set out to kill Elijah, Elijah upon hearing it was greatly discouraged. What did he do? He hid himself. Then God said to him, “What doest thou here?” While he was murmuring, the Lord said, “Yet will I leave me seven thousand” (I Kings 19:9-18). These are “the rest that are in Thyratira.” When Jezebel lived on this earth, there was Elijah; so in the roman Catholic Church there have also been many who belong to the Lord. Not only in Spain, but also in France and Great Britain, there were many who were burned. The blood of many was shed in the Roman Catholic Church. This is a fact. Today the Roman Catholic Church is still trying her best to persecute. Thank the Lord, there are still those who “have not this teaching, who know not the deep things of Satan, as they are wont to say.” The word “deep things” in Greek is “Bathea,” which means mystery. The Roman Catholic Church greatly likes to use this word. They have many mysteries, or deep doctrines, in their midst. These doctrines are not of the Lord, but are the words of Jezebel. Upon those who do not follow this doctrine, the Lord will not put any other burden, but that which they already have they must hold fast. Hold fast “my word” which you have known ㅡ this is enough. Do not lose what you already have, “till I come.”

 

“And he that overcometh, and he that keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to shivers; as I also have received of my Father.” This is the first promise. What is the meaning of this? Everyone who tends sheep has a rod. When the sheep do not behave well, he can use the rod to beat them gently. Matthew chapter 13 says that an angel will come and gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, that is, use force to cast out all things that are not right. But this does not means that in the Millennium the nations will no longer exist. We know they will still be there. Through the iron rod God will break these things into pieces.

 

What God produces are stones; what man produces are bricks. Bricks are very similar to stones. The tower of Babel was built of bricks. From the tower of Babel to the second epistle of Timothy, the Lord says regarding all those who imitate Him that they are the “earthen vessels” (“vessels of the potter”). The Lord says that the overcomer will shepherd the nations and break the earthen vessels to shivers. “Rule” in the original text means “shepherd.” The word “shepherd” means that it is not something accomplished at once, but rather done by beating one by one as the need arises. This is to shepherd. This sort of thing will probably be done continuously until the new heaven and new earth are brought in. The kingdom is the introduction to the new heaven and new earth. In the new heaven and new earth, only righteousness dwells. That is why the rod of iron here must be used to shepherd them and break all the things that come out of men to shivers.

 

"내가 또 그에게 새벽별을 주리라." 이것이 두번째 약속이다. 중국에서 이 새벽별을 계명성(daybreak star, 새벽별)이라 한다. 가장 어둠이 짙은 시각에, 날이 새려는 그 때에 이 별은 아주 잠깐 동안 나타나고, 그리고는 해가 뜬다. 태양을 보는 자들은 다수이다. 그러나 새벽별을 본 자는 드물다. 말라기 4장의 말씀 "의로운 해가 떠올라"처럼 훗날 모든 자들이 주님을 볼 것이다. 그러나 모든 자들이 그 빛을 보기 전에 당신은 이미 어둠 가운데 그 빛을 먼저 볼 수도 있다. 이것이 새벽별을 주시리라는 의미이다. 날새기 직전은 정말로 어둡다. 그러나 바로 그 순간이 새벽별이 나타나는 때이다. 주께서는 이기는 자들에게 가장 어두운 때에 새벽별을 받게 될 것이라 약속하신다. 이는 그가 주님을 뵙게 될 것이라는 말이고, 그가 휴거될 것 (갑자기 들림을 받을 것)이라는 말이다. 당신이 태양을 보게 된다면 이는 낮 시간이다. 그러나 새벽별을 보는 자는 반드시 특별나게도 남들이 자는 동안 깨어 일어나는 자이다. 이것이 바로 이긴자들에게 주어진 약속이다.

"귀 있는 자는 성령이 교회들에게 하시는 말씀을 들을찌어다." 주께서는 로마 카톨릭 교회에게만 말씀하시는 것이 아니라 모든 교회들에게도 말씀하신다. 처음 서신에서는 "귀 있는 자는 들을찌어다"라는 말씀 다음에 이긴자가 언급된다. 우리는 "귀 있는 자"를 먼저 읽게 되고 그 다음에 이긴자에 대한 약속을 읽게 된다. 그러나 두아디라 교회부터 순서가 바뀐다. 이는 첫번 세 그룹과 그 다음 그룹이 구별됨을 보이는 것이다. 이전에는 에베소 다음에 서머나, 서머나 다음에 버가모, 버가모 다음에 두아디라가 나타났다. 그러나 이제는 두아디라 교회가 끝나고 사데 교회가 등장하는 것이 아니다. 두아디라 교회는 주님의 재림까지 계속된다. 또 사데 교회가 끝나고 빌라델비아 교회, 빌라델비아 교회가 끝나고 라오디게아 교회가 시작되는 것이 아니다. 그게 아니라 사데 교회가 존속하는 중에 빌라델비아 교회가 나타나고 빌라델비아 교회가 존속하는 중에 라오디게아 교회가 나타난다. 사데, 빌라델비아, 라오디게아 교회도 주님의 재림 때까지 계속된다. 처음 세 교회는 타나났다 사라졌다. 그러나 뒤의 네 교회는 차례로 나타나 주님의 재림까지 존속한다.

 

“And I will give him the morning star.” This is the second promise. The morning star is the so-called daybreak star in Chinese. At the darkest hour, just at the time the day is breaking, it appears for a little while, and then the sun arises. many people see the sun, but few have seen the morning star. One day the Lord will be seen by the whole world, as recorded in Malachi chapter four: The sun of righteousness shall arise.“ But before everyone sees the light, you may have already seen it first while in darkness. This is what it means to receive the morning star. Just before the day breaks, it is really dark. But it is at that very moment the morning star appears. The lord promises the overcomer that he will receive the morning star at the darkest time: this means that he will see the Lord and be raptured. When you see the sun, it is always during the daylight hours, but he who sees the morning star is one who makes a special point of rising to see while others are asleep. This is the promise to the overcomer.

 

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.” The Lord is not only speaking to the Roman Catholic Church, but also the all the churches.

 

In the first three epistles, the calling to the overcomer comes after “he that hath an ear, let him hear.” First we read, “he that hath an ear,” and then the promise to the overcomer. But starting with Thyatira, the order is reversed. This proves that the first three churches are of one group, while the last four churches are of another. There is a difference between these two groups. Formerly it was after the age of Ephesus had passed that Smyrna came, and after Smyrna had passed that Pergamos came, and after Pergamos had passed that Thyatira came. But now it is not when Thyatira passes away that Sardis come. Thyatira will continue till the Lord comes back. Nor is it when Sardis passes that Philadelphia comes, nor when Philadelphia passes that Laodicea appears. Rather it is when Sardis still exists, Philadelphia comes; and when Philadelphia still exists, Laodicea appears. Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea will also continue until the Lord Jesus comes again. The first three all came and went, but the last four emerge gradually and continue together until the Lord comes back again.
